Specification of Letters Patent.- Patentd Rigby 10, 31921.
VApplication led September 3, 1920. Serial No. 408,009.
To all whom. t may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED C. O. BooK, a subject of Germany, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a'full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the Saule.
.My invention relates to an improvement in locks, the object being to provide bolt mechanism constructed to interlock with the strike plate or keeper so as to prevent a Separation of these parts by jimmying or otherwise and also to provide means for reinforcing and deadlocking the said bolt members so that when the door is locked the said interlocking members cannot be' disengaged from the strike plate or keeper except -by the proper manipulation of the bolt actuating mechanism. I j
l/Vith these and other objects in view my invention consists in the parts and combination of parts, and in the details of construction as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims: i
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a view in elevationof thelock with the cover plate removed, the bolts being shown shaped bolts, the former being broken away to show the shoulder 17.
10 represents the vlock casing and 11 the strike plate or keeper provided with an opening to receive the bolt mechanism of the lock and adapted to be overlapped by the said bolt mechanism. 'Ihe face plate 12 of the casing 10 is provided with a rectangular opening for the passage and free movements of the bolt 13 which latter are hook shaped and are, pivotally mounted ou pins 14 secured to the casing. These pins are located adjacent the ends of the slot 15 the end plate 12 of the casing, and the bolts 13 which are mounted on said pins are VI -shaped and so located that when they are turned inwardly or retracted, their free endsrest adjacent each other at the center as shown in Fig. 2 and flush or approximately so with the outer face of the casing 10, and wlienturned to locking position, their freeends which are at right angles to their bodies, overhang the end walls of the bolt opening inthe keeper and lock the keeper to the lock and absolutely prevent the said parts from being separated by a jimmy or other tool.
Each bolt is provided with a curved tail piece 16 integral with the body of the bolt and curved inwardly toward each other and engaging shoulders 17, which in the present are in their retracted or housed position as i Shown in Fig. 2, the dead locking bolt 18 rests against the latter as shown, and the curved tail pieces of the bolts rest against the shoulders on the dead locking bolt so that the bolts 13 and dead loc-king bolt 18 are so located and connected that when one moves outwardly the other moves in the same direction. This dead lockingbolt is as wide as the space between the two l.- shaped bolts when the latter. are projected as shown in Fig. 1, and so coupled to the latter by thev curved tail pieces/as previously explained, that the movements imparted to the. dead locking bolt 18 by the actuating springs 19 of the latter and also by the knob and key actuated mechanism, are
transmitted to the L-shaped bolts so that the latter are controlled in their movements by the movements of the dead locking bolt. This latter bolt is provided with two rearwardly projecting stems 20 which pass through the cross bar 21, the latter bearing at its ends against the shoulders 22 and yieldingly held against the latter by the springs 19 embracing the stems 20. rllhese springs bear at their ends respectively against the inner end of the dead locking bolt 18 and the cross bar 21 and tend to force said bolt outwardly. ,j j
As the L-shaped bolts are pivoted and are moved in both directions by the dead locking bolt, and as the latter is forced outwardly by the springs 19 it follows that means must be provided for holding the l..-
shaped bolts in their0 retracted positions. The means I employ consists of `a trip lever 23 pivoted at its inner end to the inner surface of the casing and provided at its outer end with a shouldered head 24 located in a moved rearwardly by its contact with the strike plate 11 during the act of closing the door. As the door approaches the jamb carrying the strike plate or keeper, the latter engages the head 24 of the trip lever 23 and forces it rearwardly thus moving the head out of the plane of the L-shaped bolts 13 and permitting the springs 19 to force the dead locking bolt 18 outwardly. As the latter moves outwardly its contact with the bodies of the L-shaped bolts turns the latter outwardly, and the deadV locking bolt 18 then continuing its movement outwardly between the two L-shaped bolts as shown in Fig. 1, absolutely locks them Aagainst movement except by the knob 27 or key mechanism 28 of the lock.
One stem 20 of the dead locking bolt is provided with a shoe 29 which is engaged by the lever 30 on the knob shank 31 for retracting the stem and its connected dead locking bolt and the said lever 30 is rovided with aprojecting stud 32 which 1s in position to be engaged by the key actuated.
mechanism in the usual and well -known manner.
The dead-locking bolt 18 is, when projected normally held in such position against inward pressure applied to the exposed or projecting part thereof by the dogging lever 33 pivoted to the inner face of the lock casing and so located that when the dead locking bolt -is projected the outer free end of said lever will be turnedinto the plane of movement of the said bolt and thus prevent it from being pushed in by pressure applied to the exposed end of same. This dogging lever 33 is moved in one direction by a spring and is provided adjacent its pivot 34 with `a laterally projecting toe 35 which is actuated by the shoulders 36 and 37 formed on the hub/38 of lever 33.y When the bolts are projected, the toe 35 rests within the re- 35 shiftsthe dogging lever 33 to one side of the path of movement of the dead locking bolt thus leaving the latter free to be retracted.
T he shape of the curved tail pieces 16 of the AL-shaped bolts are such that after the dead locking bolt has thrown the L-shaped bolt to locking position, the dead locking bolt y will then be free to move outwardly without interference and without further movement of the L-shaped bolts until its outer end is approximately in a plane with the outer end ofthe L-shaped bolts thus not only acting as a reinforce for the L-shaped bolts, but as a main bolt for the lock, the L-shaped bolts operating mainly to tie the lock to the keeper 11' so as to prevent a separation of these parts. In retracting the -bolts the deadlocking bolt moves inwardly a sufficient distance to permit the L-shaped bolts to turn before engaging the curved tail pieces,
which, as before explained, are then engaged by the shoulders 17 on the deadlocking, and the continued inward movement of the latter then operates to turn and release the L-shaped bolts from the keeper.
The lock mechanism may be actuated by a knob, and also by a key mechanism from the outer side of the door in the usual manner.
It is evident that many slight changes might be resorted to in the relative arrangement of the parts shown and described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention hence, I would have it understood that I do not wish to confine myself to the exact construction and arrangement.
