To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, AUGUST ARnNs and ERNEST L. TEIGH, citizens of the United States, residing at New Britain, Hartford county, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to improvements in locks particularly adapted for hotel corridor doors.
The object thereof is to provide a lock which may be operated by a series of keys, including duplicate guest or change keys, a master key for unlocking all the doors on one floor, and a grand-master key adapted to unlock the doors on all iioors under certain conditions. The series also includes a so-called emergency or proprietors key, which is not only adapted to unlock all the doors on all floors, but also may so lock the door that it may be unlocked by any of the other keys, or so lock it that it may not be operated by any of the other keys.
A further object of the invention is to provide a thumb-turn and mechanism connected therewith by which the door may be locked from the inside in such manner that it may not be unlocked from the outside by any of the keys except one of the duplicate change keys or the emergency key.
A further obj ect is to so construct the lock that the door may always be unlocked from the inside by the thumb-turn when locked from the outside byany of the keys.
For these several purposes the lock is provided with a key-operated pin tumbler or cylinder locking mechanism having a boltretracting cam arm and stop shoulders cooperating therewith, which in combination with the bolt mechanism proper and the thumb-turn mechanism, may serve to effect these objects.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, a preferred embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lock with the cover plate removed to show the interior mechanism. In the embodiment of our invention herein selected for illustration, 1 indicates a lock case having a face plate 2, locking bolt 3, and latch bolt 4 operable by a knob spindle connected with the roll-back 5.
6 indicates the body of a key-controlled pin tumbler mechanism having a key plug 7 (Fig. 10), a pin tumbler cylinder 8 for providing for a greater number of permutations of the lock in combination with the pin tumblers 9. At the inner end o f the cylinder 8 is located a pair of concentrically mounted pin tumbler controlled cylinders 10 and 11, which are provided with stop shoulders adapted to cooperate with a stop shoulder on the bolt actuating cam member 12 in the manner hereinafter described.
13 indicates a cam actuating member, between which and the cam member may be interposed a friction ring 14 to hold the cam member in position when actuated by the key plug and cylinders 10 and 11. The dead bolt 3 has a tumbler 15 pivoted thereon at 16, said tumbler having a gate 17 coperating with a fence 18 in the usual manner. The rear end of the tumbler has a lateral arm 19 extending into the path of the cam arm 12 as the latter is rotated to project or retract the bolt. rThe lock is also provided with a thumb-turn roll-back 20, having the arms 2121 adapted to engage thebolt to project and ret-ract the same. The rollback 2O is also provided with arms 22 engaging an extension 23 of the bolt tumbler 15, whereby said tumbler may be released from its fence 18 by means of the thumb-turn, and the bolt may be thereafter retracted by said thumb-turn. lt is desirable also that it be possible to retract the dead bolt from the outer side of the door by means of certain of the keys of the series when said bolt has been projected by the thumb-turn from the inner side of the door. To this end we provide a sliding plate 24, having a vertical slot (Fig. 3) at one end and a shoulder 2G at the opposite end. The slot 25 is engaged by a pin 27 carried by the bell crank lever 28, which lever is pivoted on th-e lock case at 29 and carries a second pin 30 engaged by a second sliding member 31 mounted by means of a slot 32 and a guide pin 33 on the lock case. To the upper end of this second sliding member 31 is pivoted an actuating arm 311, which, when the sliding member is raised to the posit-ion indicated in Fig. 3, is thrown by a pin 35 in the lock case into the path of the key-controlled cam member 12.
Referring to the thumb-turn roll-back 20, this roll-back is provided also with arms 3G adapted to engage a. cam surface 26 on the slide 24. It will be seen also from an inspection of Fig. 9, that these roll- back arms 21, 22 and 36 are located in different parallel planes, one above the other, and that the sides of the roll-back slot 3aM of the locking bolt, the extension 23 of the tumbler 15 and the sliding plate 24 are located in correspondingly different planes, so that the arms 22 actuate the tumbler 15, the arms 21 actuate the dead bolt 3, and the arms 36 actuate or are actuated by the sliding plate 2er. By this construction and the arrangement of the connections between the sliding plate 2a and the actuating arm 3st of the second slide 31, when said actuating arm 341 is -engaged by the key-controlled cam member 12, as indicated in Fig. 3, further rotation of this cam member will cause the slide plate 24e to move forward simultaneously and with engagement of the roll-back arm 3G by the cam surface 2G of the slide 2st, the roll-back will be rotated, thus reti-acting the bolt by means of its arms 21. Thus the dead bolt may be retracted from the outside through the pin tumbler mechanism and the connections ust described, when the bolt has been projected by the thumb-turn from the inside. lt is desirable also that this operation of the bolt from the outside when projected from the inner side of the door be confined to certain of the keys, such, for
example, as the duplicate change key and the emergency key. To this end, referring to Figs. 10 to 19 inclusive, the master key is adapted to rotate only the key plug 7 (see Fig. 10). The change key rotates the key plug 7 and the inner cylinder 11 of the pair of cylinders 11 and 12, whereas the emergency key is adapted to rotate the key plug' and both of the cylinders 10 and 11. r1`he cam member 12 is rotatably mounted on the key plug, and is actuated by shoulders 14 and 111b on the actuating disk 14, which is tired to the key plug. This cam member furthermore is provided with a stop shoulder or lug 12a (Fig. 17) adapted to be engaged by stop shoulders 10'L1 and 11a on the inner ends of the cylinders 10 and 11 respectively (see Fig. 13).
Fig. 13 illustrates the normal position of the key plug, the several pin tumbler cylinders, the actuating disk and the cam member. From this it will be evident that all of the keys may project the dead bolt by rotation of the cam member 12 in a clockwise direction (as viewed in Fig. 13) until the cam member assumes the position indicated in Fig. 14, since neither of the stop shoulders 10a or 11iL hinder rotation of the cam member in this direction. lVhen, however, the dead bolt has been projected by the thumb-turn from the inner side of the door, it is evident from an inspection of Figs. 1 and 3, that said bolt can only be retracted by rotation of the cam member in a direction counterclockwise from the position indicated in Fig. 17. Since the master key only rotates the key plug, it is obvious that this counterclockwise rotation of said key will be prevented by the stop shoulder 11a on the cylinder 11, as shown in Fig. 11. Again, since the change key rotates only the key plug and inner cylinder 11, this key can only rotate the cam member counterclockwise from normal posi tion until the lug 12il is stopped by the stop shoulder 10a of the outer cylinder 10. Such rotation, however, is insulticient to retract the dead bolt, as will be seen from an inspection of Figs. l and 3. It is therefore necessary to provide means by which the cam member may retract the dead bolt during its short travel from normal position shown in Fig. 13, to the position shown in Fig. 16. Such mechanism comprises the actuating arm 3.4L-, slide 31, bell crank lever 2S, slide 24 and roll-back 20, with its several arms, for when the cam member is rotated counterclockwise from normal position in Fig. 13, as it may be by the change and emergency keys (but not by the master or grand-master keys), said cam member engages the arm 34, and, through the series of members just mentioned, causes the cam surface 26 of the slide 24, by its engagement with one of the arms 36 of the roll-back, to partially rotate said roll-back, so that the arm 22 will first release the tumbler 15 from the fence 1S, and thereafter a lug 24a on the rear of the slide 24C continues the rotation of the roll-back 20 by engagement with one of its arms 21 and causes the other of said arms 21 to retract the dead bolt. The rotation of the rollback 20 to normal position is completed by pressure of the extension 23 of the tumbler 15 on the broad side of said roll-back. Hence, retraction of the dead bolt from the outer side of the door when projected by the thumb-turn from the inside is restricted to the change and emergency keys.
The rear wall of the slot 3a, which is engaged by the arms 21 of the roll-back 20, is formed by a detent 3b pivoted at 3c, whereby the arms 21 of said roll-back may trip and clear said detent 3b in projecting the dead bolt, and engage the front wall of said detent to retract the dead bolt, when the dead bolt has been projected by the thumb-turn or projected from the outside while the occupant is in the room.
It is sometimes desirable that access to the room be confined to the holder of the emergency key or proprietor. For this purpose the dead bolt may be projected by rotation of the cam member 12 from normal position in Fig. 13, clockwise for a complete revolution, since the emergency key rotates both of the cylinders 10 and 11, as well as the key plug 7, whereby the lug 12a on the cam member 12 is not blocked by either of the shoulders 10EL or 11a in such rotation, but all of these parts travel bodily together. The actuating arm 34 of the slide 31 is capable of turning upwardly to a certain extent to permit the free passage'of the cam member in such rotation, when said arm is in the position indicated in Fig. 1, thus leaving said arm 34 out of t-he path of the cam arm, in which case the bolt can only be retracted by counterclockwise rotation of the cam member 12 by the emergency key.
Vhen the bolt is so projected by a complete rotation of the emergency key and the pin cylinders, key plug and cam arm left in normal position, as indicated in Fig. 17, it is obvious that the bolt cannot be retracted by any of the other keys of the series, for the reason that in the case of the master and grand-master keys, the cam member 12 cannot rotate counterclockwise, Fig. 17 (the direct-ion necessary to retract the bolt), owing to the engagement of its stop shoulder 12a with the stop shoulder 11a. Likewise, the bolt cannot be retracted by the guest key, for the reason, first, that the arm 34 is out of the path of the cam arm, and second, the stop lug 12EL will be blocked by the stop shoulder 10L of the pin cylinder 10 before the lever can be rotated far enough to retract t-he dead bolt. Thus t-he emergency or proprietors key may block the lock against the operation of any of the other keys of the series.

Vihat we claim is:
1. In a lock, the combination with a dead bolt, of a pin tumbler mechanism for operating the same from the outer side, a thumb turn for operating the same from the inner side, a series of keys for operating said tumbler mechanism, including duplicate change keys and an emergency key, and means in said pin tumbler mechanism for confining retraction of said dead bolt to said change and emergency keys when projected by said thumb-turn.
2. In a lock, the combination with a dead bolt, of a pin tumbler mechanism for operating the bolt from the outer side, a thumbturn for operating said bolt from the inner side, a series of keys including duplicate change keys and an emergency key, a connection between said pin tumbler mechanism and said roll-back whereby said rollback may be operated by said pin tumbler mechanism to retract the dead bolt when projected by the thumb-turn, and means in said pin tumbler mechanism to confine such retraction of the dead bolt to said change and emergency keys.
3. In a lock, the combination with a dead bolt, of a pin tumbler mechanism including a plurality of pin tumbler cylinders and a cam arm, an actuating disk for said arm, a series of keys for said lock including duplicate change keys and an emergency key, a thumb--turn roll-back adapted to operate said bolt from the inner side of the door, operative connections between said pin tumbler mechanism and said roll-back whereby said dead bolt may be retracted by said pin tumbler mechanism by the change and emergency keys, and stop shoulders on said cam arm and said pin tumbler cylinders to prevent retract-ion of the dead bolt by any eX- cept the change and emergency keys when the bolt has been projected by the thumbturn.
4. In a lock, the combination with a dead bolt, of a tumbler and fence therefor, a keycontrolled pin tumbler mechanism having a cam arm adapted to release said bolt tumbler and to project and retract the dead bolt from the outer side of the door, a thumbturn and roll-back adapted to release said bolt tumbler and to project and retract the dead bolt from the inner side of the door, and a connection between said pin tumbler mechanism and said roll-back whereby said bolt tumbler may be released and the bolt retracted by the operation of said pin tumbler mechanism 'on said roll-back through said connection.
5. In a lock, the combination with a dead bolt, of a key-controlled pin tumbler mechanism comprising a key plug, a bolt actuated cam arm rotatably mounted thereon, an actuating disk fixed to said plug, a plurality of pin tumbler cylinders mounted concentrically on said key plug, stop shoulders on said cam member and said pin tumbler cylinders respectively, a series of keys including change keys and an emergency key adapted to operate said pin tumbler mechanism to project and retract the dead bolt, said pin tumblers and said stop shoulders being so constructed and arranged to limit the eX- tent. of rotation of said cam member by all of said keys except said emergency key where- With said emergency key may proj ect the dead bolt and position the pin tumbler mechanism so that said dead bolt cannot be retracted by any of the other keys of the series.
6. In a lock, the combination with a dead bolt, of a key-controlled pin tumbler mechanism, including a bolt actuating cam arm, a series of keys adapted to operate the same including change keys and an emergency key, a thumb-turn and roll-back adapted to operate said bolt from the inner side of the door, a member having a part adapted to eX- tend into the path of said cam arm, a second member adapted to actuate said roll-back and connected with said iirst member Whereby said roll-back may be operated to retract the dead bolt by said cam member, and means in said pin tumbler mechanism for restricting such operation to the change and emergency keys.
7. In a lock, the combination with a dead bolt, oit' a key-controlled pin tumbler mechanism including a bolt actuating cam arm adapted to project and retract said bolt, a thumb-turn and roll-back operable yfrom the inner side, a bolt tumbler constructed and arranged to be released both by said cam arm and said roll-back, connections between said cam arm and said roll-back whereby the latter may be operated by the Jformer to release said bolt tumbler and project the dead bolt, and means in said pin tumbler mechanism to conne such operation to certain of the keys of the series.
8. In a lock, the combination with a dead bolt, of a key-controlled pin tumbler mechanism comprising a cam arm for projecting and retracting the dead bolt from the outer side of the door, a thumb-turn and roll-back for projecting and retracting the dead bolt Jfrom the inner side of the door, a bolt tumbler mounted on said bolt, said roll-back having an arm to release said tumbler and having an arm to project and retract the dead bolt, a connection bet-Ween said pin tumbler mechanism and said roll-back having a portion adapted to lie in the path of said cam member and having a` portion adapted to engage said third arm of the roll-back to actuate said roll-back to retract the dead bolt When said connection is operated by said cam arm, a series of keys adapted to operate said pin tumbler mechanism including change keys and an emergency key, and means to confine actuation of said roll-back from said pin tumbler mechanism to said change and emergency keys.
