To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, AUGUST Alarms and ERNEST L. TEIOH, citizens of the United States, residing at New Britain, Hartford county, State of Connecticut, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I-Iotel-Lock-Cylinder Control, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to hotel corridor locks and is particularly concerned with the type of lock with which a plurality of keys are used such as a change key, master, grandmaster and emergency keys, which look is also provided with a deadlocking device for the latch bolt, operated by a thumb-turn from the inner side of a door,
The object of the invention is to prevent the unlocking of the door from the outside by the master or grand-master keys when dead-locked from the inside. In such case, however, the door may be unlocked by a socalled emergency key, usually in the hands of theproprietor, and also by a duplicate change key held by a companion of the oc cupant of the room.
A further object is to enable the proprietor, by means of-the emergency key, to lock the door against unlocking from the outside by any other of the keys of the series, it being understood, however, that the door may be unlocked from the inside under all conditions.
A further object is to provide, with a dead-locking device, means for preventing the dead-locking of the bolt when the door is open, which might result in serious in jury to the striker plate when the door is slammed to with the bolt rigidly held.
In the particular type of lock forming the subject-matter of this application, the invention is employed in combination with a latch bolt or a bolt normally spring projected.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in the construct-ion and relative arrangement of parts, a preferred embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of the interior of the lock, the cover plate being removed, showing the dead-locking means in inoperative po sition. In the embodiment of our invention herein selected for illustration, 1 represents a lock case; 2 a face plate; 3 a latch bolt having a cross-head 4:, the forward projection 5 of which is adapted to be engaged by the cam member of the pin tumbler mechanism. The cross-head is also engaged by a rollback yoke 6 adapted to be operated by a roll-back, not shown but located beneath a stationary member 7, whereby the latch bolt may be retracted by a knob and spindle on the inner side of the door. The outer knob, however, is fixed.
8 is a dead-locking slide for the latch bolt and is provided with a finger 9 which stands immediately behind the cross-head 4:. Said cross-head is notched on its under side, as indicated at 10, Fig. 2, so that when the dead-locking slide 8 is in its lower position, as indicated at Fig. 1, its finger 9 will stand in alinement with the notch 10 and not interfere with the retraction of the latch bolt. When, however, the dead-locking slide is in the upper position, as indicated at Fig. 3, the finger 9 will lie behind the solid portion of the cross-head and prevent retraction of the bolt until the dead-locking member is restored to inoperative position. This deadlocking slide may be operated by a thumbturn (not shown) on the inner side of the door, operating through a roll-back hub 11. The forward side of the roll-back hub is formed with an angular face 12, engaged by a spring 13, by which said hub may be held in either position to hold the dead-locking slide in operative or inoperative position.
In order to prevent the moving of the dead-locking slide to operative position when the door is open, we provide a blocking lever 14 suitably connected for operation with a controller slide 15 operated by a controller 16 in the usual well-known man ner. When the door is open, the controller is projected, as indicated in Fig. 1, and the upper arm of the lever 14 will lie against one of the angular faces 11 of the roll-back hub, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 1, to prevent the accidental movement of the dead-locking slide 8 to operative position. WVhen the door is closed, the roll-back deadlocking lever and controller assume the position indicated in Figs. 1 to 3.
\Vith the lock mechanism thus far described, we employ a pin tumbler or cylinder lock mechanism which may be operated by a plurality of keys. This pin tumbler mecha nism is clearly illustrated in Figs. 13 to'15 inclusive, in which 17 is a cylinder casing in which are mounted the key plug 18 and a pin tumbler cylinder 19 of the usual con-' struction for increasing the permutations of the lock. With the key-plug 18 and cylinder 19, pin tumblers 2O cooperate in the usual manner. To the rear of the cylinder 19 are located two short cylinders 21 and 22 con trolled by a pin tumbler 23. On the inner end of the key plug is rotatably mounted a cam arm 24. Also fixed on the key plug outside of the cam arm is an actuating disk 25, (see Fig. 16) having actuating shoulders 26 and 27 which actuate the cam arm 24 to re; tract the latch bolt. The inner short cylinder 21 is provided with a stop shoulder 28, and the outer short cylinder 22 with a stop shoulder 29, (see Figs. 8 to 12 inclusive). The inner side of the cam arm 24 is provided with a lug 30 (Fig. 17) to cooperate with these stop shoulders. The pin tumblers of the cylinder lock are so arranged and the master key is so bitted that the latter can turn the key plug only, hence, this key rotates only the actuating disk 25 and the cam arm 24 without disturbing the position of the stop shoulders 011 the inner and outer cylinders 21 and 22. Consequently, as will be seen from an inspection of Fig. 8, the
master key 31, as indicated by the position of'the tumblers in Fig. 13, can only rotate the key plug clockwise to retract the latch bolt. The grand master key will, of course be so bitted, and the pin tumblers of the various keys will be so arranged that the grand master key will be capable of invariably arranging the tumblers of the cylinder 19 so that they will break along the line of the periphery of said cylinder as indicated in Fig. It is to be borne in mind in referring to Figs. 8 to 12 inclusive that the observer is supposed to be viewing the inner end of the cylinder lock mechanism or that presented to the latch bolt mechanism, hence, the position of the parts in these figures is reversed with respect to Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The change key, as indicated in Fig. 14, rotates both the key plug 8 and the inner cylinder 21, consequently, this key may rotate the cam arm 24 in either direction until brought to a stop by the stop shoulder 29 on the outer cylinder 22. The emergency key 33, as indicated in Fig. 15, may rotate the key plug and both short cylinders, consequently is free to turn irrespective of the stop shoulders 28 and 29.
WVhen the dead-locking slide 8 is in inoperative position, as indicated in Fig. 1, all of the keys may retract the latch bolt when the several cylinders are in the normal position indicated in Fig. 8. When, however, the dead-locking slide has been moved to operative position by the thumb-turn, as indicated in Fig. 3, the latch bolt cannot be retracted by any of the keys until the deadlocking slide is released. This can only be accomplished by the duplicate change key and the emergency key. To this end, the dead-locking slide is provided with an actuating lug 34 adapted to be engaged with the cam arm 24 when said arm is rotated counter'clockwise, as viewed in Fig. 11, until the stop lug 30 on the cam arm comes into engagement with the stop shoulder 29 on the cylinder 22, which cylinder isnot moved by the change key. The extent of movement of the cam arm, however, after engaging the dead-locking slide lug 34, is suflicient to move the dead-locking slide from operative to inoperative position. The key may then be rotated in the opposite direction to retract the latch bolt in the usual manner. Obviously, the emergency key is capable of performing the same function.
In considering the several movements of the cam arm and the cylinders, and stop shoulders cooperating therewith, it is to be borne in mind that the variety of functions is rendered possible largely by the fact that the actuating disk 25 is capable of a considerable amountof lost motion due to the position of its shoulders 26 and 27 so that the disk frequently travels much farther than the distance necessary to move the cam arm from a position of rest to the completion of a function.
It is often desirable to limit the access to a room to the holder of the emergency key or the proprietor of the hotel. For this purpose the cylinder lock mechanism may be so positioned by the emergency key as to be inoperative for unlocking the latch bolt by any of the other keys thus: The emergency key may be inserted in the key plug this figure. An examination of this figure will show that it is then impossible to rotate the cam arm counter clockwise since it is now in engagement with the cross-head 4 of the latch bolt and it is impossible to rotate it clock-wise since the stop lug 30 is in engagement with the stop shoulder 29, which is not moved or rotated by either the master, grand-master or guest key. It is, therefore, necessary, in order to restore the lock to normal position to do so with the emergency key, which is capable of rotating all of the cylinders in either direction.
While we have herein shown and described a preferred form of our invention, it is to be understood that the same may be altered in detail and relative arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What we claim is:

In a lock, the combination with a latch bolt of a pin tumbler lock mechanism operable by any of a series of difierent keys including an emergency key to retract said bolt, and means to prevent retraction of the latch bolt by any other key of the series when said pin tumbler mechanism has been operated by said emergency key.

In a lock, the combination with a latch bolt of a pin tumbler locking mechanism operable by any of a series of difierent keys including an emergency key, and means to prevent the retraction of said latch bolt by any other key of the series when said pin tumbler mechanism has been given a complete rotation in one direction by the emergency key.
3. In a lock, the combination with a latch bolt of a pin tumbler mechanism operable by any of a series of keys including an emergency key and duplicate change keys, dead-locking means for said latch bolt operable from the inner side of the door, and means to prevent release of said dead-locking mechanism from the outer side of the door by any except the emergency key and the duplicate change keys.

In a lock, the combination with a latch bolt of a pin tumbler mechanism operable by any of a series of keys including an emergency key and change keys, dead-locking means for said latch bolt operable from the inner side of the door, and means to prevent release of said deadlocking means from the outer side of the door by any except the emergency and change keys, and means to prevent retraction of the latch bolt by any except the emergency key when said pin tumbler mechanism has been operated by the emergency key.
5. In a lock, the combination with a latch bolt of a pin tumbler mechanism operable by any of a series of keys including an emergency key and change keys, a dead-locking member for said latch bolt operable from the inner side of the door, means to confine release of said dead-locking means from the outer side of the door to said emergency key and change keys, and means to enable said emergency key to block retraction of the latch bolt by any of the other keys of the series when given a complete rotation in one direction by the emergency key.

In a lock, the combination with a latch bolt of pin tumbler mechanism operable by a series of keys including an emergency key and change keys, a dead-locking member for said latch bolt, said pin tumbler mechanism having a cam'arm and a plurality of stop shoulders cooperating therewith whereby release of said dead-locking member from the outer side may be confined to said emergency and change keys and whereby retraction of the latch bolt may be confined to said emergency key.

In a lock, the combination with a latch bolt of pin tumbler mechanism comprising a plurality of pin cylinders, a series of keys for said pin tumbler mechanism including an emergency key and change keys, means whereby certain of said keys may rotate only the key plug whereby said change keys may operate said key plugand one or more of said pin cylinders whereby said emergency key may operate the key plug in all of said cylinders, and means on said cylinder and cam arm whereby retract-ion of the latch bolt may be confined to the emergency key when said cylinders have been operated by the emergency key.

In a lock, the combination with a latch bolt of a pin tumbler mechanism comprising a key plug, a'plurality of pin cylinders and a cam arm, stop shoulders on said cylinders and said cam arm constructed and arranged in cooperation with the pin tumblers to prevent retraction of the latch bolt by any but the emergency key when said pin tumbler mechanism has been operated in one direction by the emergency key.

In a lock, the combination with a latch bolt of a pin tumbler mechanism comprising a key plug, a plurality of pin cylinders and a cam arm for retracting the latch bolt, a plurality of keys including an emergency key and change keys adapted to cooperate with said pin tumbler mechanism, a deadlocking member for said latch bolt operable from the inner side of the door, said cam arm and said pin cylinders having stop shoulders constructed and arranged to prevent release of the dead-locking member by Copies of this patent may be obtained for any but the emergency and change keys and to prevent retraction of the latch bolt by any but the emergency key when operated in one direction by the emergency key.

In a lock, the combination With a latch bolt of a pin tumbler mechanism. comprising a key plug, a plurality of pin cylinders and a bolt operating cam arm, a series of keys adapted to cooperate with said pin tumbler mechanism and including an emergency key and change keys, a dead-locking member for said latch bolt operable from the inner side of they door, step lugs on said cam arm and said pin cylinders respectively constructed and arranged to prevent rotation ofthe cam arm by any except emergency and change keys in one direction for release of the deadlocking member While permitting rotation in the opposite direction for retraction of the latch bolt and to prevent rotation by any of the keys except the emergencyvkey for retraction of the latch bolt when said pin tumbler mechanism has been given a complete rotation in the opposite direction by the emergency key.
