Be it known that I, HENRY G. VOIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing in New Britain, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to locks, and more especially to locks for corridor doors of hotels. In certain aspects of the invention, my improvements are directed particularly to a so-called two-bolt lock of the general type illustrated in the Carroll Patent No. $98,434, vissued to Sargent &. Company on September 15, 1908, but in certain phases of the invention the improvements are applicable to a lock with a single dead bolt.'
In the two-bolt hotel lock of the type above indicated, the customary bitted or winged keys have usually been employed. When the inside bolt is protracted by the occupant of the room, the maids key cannot operate the outside bolt (for the purpose of retracting the inside bolt through the lever connection), owing to the fact that when the inside bolt is protracted, award or other key blocking member is moved into operative relation with respect to the outside keyhole, so as to prevent all of the keys, except the emergency key, from operating the lock from the outside.
One of the primary objects of the present invention is to provide means for blocking the operation of the maids key, and other keys of low order, from the outside ofv the door, under the conditions noted, in the case where the outside bolt is operated by a master keyed cylinder lock, or pin tumbler mechanism, with its associated keys, instead of by the customary bitted keys acting directly on the bolt.
Another object of the invention is to provide a two-bolt lock, in which one of the keys, which may be termed the emergency key, is operative to actuate and release the tumbler mechanism of the inside bolt, when said bolt is in protracted position, and when said key is inserted into the pin tumbler 4mechanism, at the outside of the door, so
that when the outside bolt is protracted by said key, the inside bolt will be retracted through the well-known lever connection, after which the outside bolt can be retracted i indepemdently, the tumbler of the inside bolt being inoperative, however, under such conditions, by means of the other key or keys. In other words, the pin tumbler mechanism at the outside of the door is so arranged with respect to the tumbler of the inside bolt that when the inside bolt is protracted, it can be retracted by the emergency key but not by the other key or keys.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved shut-out mechanism applicable to a dead bolt so that when the bolt has been protracted by a key of high order, it cannot be retracted by a key of lower order.
I also aim to provide an improved form of tumbler mechanism for a dead bolt operable by a plurality of keys; to furnish an improved form of cylinder lock of the masterkeyed type; and to generally improve the construction and operation of devices of the class to which my invention relates.

In the drawings, I have shown my iml 65 saine'isjprovided withrtalons4 d provements applied to aY two-bolt lock in which the bolts are actuated lby inside and outside cylinder locks respectively. 1t may be stated, however, that the operationof the inside bolt by means of a cylinder lock is, for the most part, entirely immaterial to the invention, inasmuch as the inside bolt can beV actuated by a thumb turn hub, or like member, ifdesired. Furthermore, it is Anot essenw tial in all aspects of the invention that the outside bolt be actuated by afcylinder lock, and, Yas previously intimated, certain features of` my improvements are applicable to a lock having a single dead bolt protractable V from either side of the door.
In the particular fornishown7 the case 2O has a-face plate or front 21, with openings fory dead bolts 22 and 23 respectively, and a latchA bolt`24. The bolt 22'may be operated 270 from thel outside 'of the door by a cylinder lock V25, having the usual pin tumblers, andV the bolt 23 may be actuated from the inside of the door by a second cylinder lock 2G (Fig. 2). The bolts 22, 23 will be referred 25 to as the outsideV and inside bolts Vrespectively, and in the particular form shown, the outsidebolt is arranged above the inside bolt, and the latter is in turn located above the latch bolt 24. lhen the inside bolt is protractechit actuates an elbow lever 27 to dog the yoke or shoe 28 by means of which the latch bolt is retracted, thereby blocking' the rotation of the outside knob, and kthus giving an indication that the room is occupied. l
The inside bolt 23 is provided with talons 29 adapted to be engaged by the dog or rollback 30 of the inside cylinder 26, and
said bolt is further provided with a single 4o tumbler 31 pivoted thereon at 31a, and having a projection 32 located between said talons. The tumbler 31 also hasa lug 33 adapted to engage the front or rear face of the usual stump or fence 34 cast on the back of the case. A blocking device 35 is associated with the cylinder lock 26 for the pur- -pose of preventing thewithdrawal of the key when the bolt 23 is protracted, and in the form shown, the blocking device 35k consists of a lever pivoted Von a post 36 on theV case. The lever 35 has one end interposed Y Y Y between projections 37 on the Vtumbler 31,
so'that as the bolt is protracted, as shown in Fig. 3,- the otherV end of the lever 35 is Q55 swung into the path of the rollback 30, while.

Referring now to the outside bolt 22, the
pted to be engaged by a rollback of the outside cylinder lock 25, as hereinafter described. This outside bolt is also provided with a plurality of tumblers adapted to coperate with said cylinder lock, and inthe form shown, these tumblers are two in number, as indi.- cated at 41 and 42, respectively. Both of these tumblers are pivoted on the bolt itself by means of a single pivot pin or post 43, and theJ tumbler 42 has a projection 44 dis- 75 posed between the talons Y 4() of the bolt, while the tumbler 41 has a projection 45 disposed between said talons. The tumbler 41, which is located beneath the tumbler 42, is provided with a projection 4G to coperate 80 with a stump or fence 47 cast on the back of the case, and it is further provided with a notch 48 adapted to be engaged by a projection 49 on the tumbler 42. The projection 49 is so arranged relatively to the notch 48 that g5 the tumbler 41 is depressed with and by the tumbler 42, when the latter is depressed by the pin tumbler mechanism, although, on the other hand, the tumbler 41 can be depressed independently of the tumbler 42. For purposes of description, I shall refer to the tumbler 41 as the ordinary or primary tumbler, inasmuch as it is actuated in the same way by all of the keys of the pin tumbler mechanism 25, and 1 shall refer to the 95 tumbler 42 as the auxiliary or emergency tumbler. Instead of having a rigid shoulder or abutment to cooperate with the fence 47, the emergency tumbler 42 is provided with a special movable abutment 5() which coperates with said fence in the manner hereinafter described. The member 50 is pivoted on the tumbler 42, at 51, and is normally held in the position shown in Fig. G by a spring 52. .This spring tends to turn the member 50 about its axis, and holds one end in snug engagement with a small projection 53 on the tumbler 42. When the tumbler 42 is given a'full actuation on the protracting movement of the bolt 22, the movable member or abutment 50 is swung bodily with the tumbler 42 so as to interlock with the fence 47, in the manner shown in Fig. G. This deadlocks the bolt in its protracted position, and it willbe understood, of course, that in this position yof the parts, the primary tumbler 41 deadlocks the bolt in the usual manner by means of the projection 46, which engages the fence 47 behind the mem ber 50. YVhen, however, the emergency tumbler 42 is given on'ly a partial actuation, that is, when it is depressed only part way, the member 50 is swung on itsvpivot 51, into the position shown in Fig. 5, by the engagement of said member 50 with one face of the 125 fence. In this position, the member 50 obviously has no function in preventing thel withdrawal of the bolt.
Y It will be manifest that while, under ce1'- tain circumstances, the movable member 50 130 prevents the retraction of the outside bolt, it does not at any time prevent the protraction of said bolt, this latter function being confined to the lug 46 on the primary tumbler 4l, which lug coperates with the front and rear faces of the fence 47 in the customary manner. i
llhen the cylinder lock 25 is actuated by a cha-nge key, master key, or other key of low order, for the purpose ofprotracting the outside bolt, the emergency tumbler 4Q is only given a partial. depression so that when the bolt yis fully protracted, it is deadlocked in that position bv the lug 4G of the primary tumbler but not by the movable member 50 of the emergency tumbler. On the other hand, when the outside bolt is protracted by the emergency key, the emergency tumbler is fully depressed, and the member 50 is moved into locking position with respect to the fence. In this position,the member 50 is not releasable by the keys of lower order for the reason that the latter cannot depress the emergency tumbler to a.
suilicient extent, and therefore the emergency key serves as a shut-out key.
In order to achieve the results just speciiied, the outside cylinder lock 25 is preferably constructed in the following manner: The case 25 contains a key plug 54 surrounded by an eccentric sleeve 55, and the key plug and sleeve are adapted to be locked to the case by the customary pin tumblers 56. 'Ihe arrangement is such that at least one key will rack the pin tumblers so as t0 rotate the key plug individually, while at least one key will rack the pin tumblers so as to rotate the key plug and sleeve together. In this last case, of course, the key plug rotates on the axis of the sleeve rather than its own axis, and it is to be noted that the axis of the sleeve is disposed somewhat above the axis of the key plug. A dog, cam or rollback 57 is secured to the rear end of the key plug by screws 58, and is provided with a radial arm carrying a projection 59 for engaging the projection 44 of the emergency tumbler'. Another 'dog or rollback 60 is adapted to rotate on the axis of the sleeve 55, and includes a ring-like body portion having an arm 6l, with side flanges 62, between which the arm of the emergency rollback'57 is confined. In the presentcase, therefore, the rollback GO, which may be termed the regular or ordinary rollback, is loose from the sleeve and rotates freely thereon, and the operating movement of said rollback is imparted to it by the interlocking with it of the arm of the emergency rollback, as described, it being understood that the emergency rollback being fixed to the key plug, ,is rotatable by all of the keys adapted to the lock. The interlocking of the arm of the emergency rollback between the flanges 62 of the regular rollback permits independent radial movement of said rollbacks when the key plug rotates on its own axis, instead of on the axis of the sleeve, as will be understood. The arm 6l of thc regular rollback is adapted to engage the talons 40 of the bolt 22 in the usual manner, and also to engage the projection 45 of the primary tumbler 41; while the projection 59 of the"""emergency rollback, as previously stated, engages the projection 44 of the emergency tumbler, and thereby either actuates the emergency tumbler to its full extent, as shown in Fig. 4, or only partially, as shown in Fig. 5. If the change key 63 (Fig. 11), master (maids) key 64 (Fig. 7), or grand master key (not shown) be used to actuate the cylinder lock 25, the key plug and sleeve are locked together, so that the emergency rollback rotates on the axis of the sleeve, and therefore the emergency rollback in protracting the bolt gives the emergency tumbler an incomplete actuation, as shown in Fig. 5. If, however, the emergency key 65 is used, this will rotate the key plug individually about its own (lower) axis, thereby carrying the emergency rollback down far enough to give the emergency tumbler a full actuation, as shown in Fig. 6. It will be readily understood, therefore, that when the bolt hasbeen protracted by the einer gency key, as shown in Fig. 6, it cannot be retracted by any of the other keys, inasmuch as said other keys rotate the emergency rollback on a higher axis, so that it will not carry down the emergency tumbler to an extent sutliciently to liberate the movable member 50 thereof from the fence 47. On the other hand, when the bolt is protracted by any of the keys of lower order in the position shown in Fig. 5, it may readily be retracted by any of said keys, or by the emergency or shut-out key.
The tumbler mechanism of the inside bolt is connected with that o'f the outside bolt in such a manner that when the bolts occupy the relative positions shown in Fig. 3, the cylinder lock 25 will be incapable of releasing the tumbler 3l of the inside bolt, it being understood, of course, that in order to re tract the inside bolt from the outside its tumbler must be released and the outside "bolt must be protracted. In the form shown,
the tumbler mechanism of the lower bolt is connected with the tumbler mechanism of the upper bolt by means of a connector 66 which may have the form shown in detail in Fig. l0. This tumbler connector is in the nature of a slide having openings at the respective ends by which it is guided vertically of the case on the respective fences 34 and 47. At its lower extremity, the connector has a lip 67, taking into a slot 68 in the tumbler 31 of the inside bolt. At its upper end, the connector has a lip 69 overlying the upper edge of the emergency tumbler, and a 'lip 70 extending beneath the lower edge of spective of the relative positions of the bolts and the tumblers slide freely Vbeneath the connector as the bolts are protracted and retracted.
The operation of the lock isV substantially as follows: Assuming the parts to be in the position shown inFigl, if the guest wishes to lock his room against intrusion, he protracts the inside bolt 23 by means of the cyl- 'inder look 26. In this operation, the knob isY dogged, as previously described, and theV slot 68 permits-the tumbler 31 to move freely with respect to the tumbler connector. It
will be observed that. in Ythis position of thel parts, the outside bolt 22 is locked against .Y
protraction by means of -the connecting lever 38, unless the inside bolt is released for retraction, and if the outside cylinder lock is actuated by one of the keys of lower order, the Vtumbler of the inside bolt will not be released, owing to the fact that the emergency tumbler 42, in abutting the lip 70 of the tumbler connector, will not carry down the tumbler connector suiiiciently far to release'the inside bolt. If, however, the emergency key be .inserted in the outside cylinder lock andVA rotated, the emergency rollback 57 will rotate on a lower axis, and will carry down the emergency tumbler and thefconnecto'r to a suiicient extent for releasing the tumbler 31, whereupon the outside Ybolt may be protracted and the inside bolt simultaneously retracted. The outside Vboltis then retracted independently, and the door is unlocked. If it is desired to lock any one out of the room, the proprietor can use Ythe emergency key as a. shut-out key, inasmuch as the keys of lower order are incapable of releasing "the outside dead bolt afterit has been thrown by the emergency key, as previously explained. In a lock, the combination of an outside bolt, a fence, a plurality of tumblers for said bolt coperating with said fence, a plurality of keys, a cylinder lock mechanism operated by one of said keys to give both of said tumblers complete actuations with respect to said fence, said cylinder lock mechanism when operated by another key being incapable of giving one of said tumblers a complete actuation, a tumbler connector actuated by said last named tumbler, and an inside bolt having a tumbler operatively connected with said tumbler connector; substantially as described.
4. In a lock, the combination of a bolt, a tumbler therefor, a tumbler connector for operating said tumbler, a second bolt having a plurality of tumblers, one of said tumblers adapted to actuate said tumbler connector and thereby the tumbler of said first bolt, a plurality of keys, and a cylinder lock mechanism adapted for actuation by said keys and constructed to depress to different degrees Ythe tumbler of said second bolt which actuates said tumbler connector as different keys are used; substantially as described.

In a lock, the combination of an inside bolt, an outside bolt, a lever connection between said bolts, tumblers for the respective bolts, a tumbler connector, means for operating the inside bolt, a pin tumbler lock for Y operating the outside bolt, and a plurality of keys fitted to said pin tumbler lock, said tumbler connector being operative by one of said keys when the bolts occupy a predetermined relation to each other, but not by another of said keys; substantially as described.

In a lock, the combination of a boltage mechanism having two sets of tumblers, a tumbler connector connecting said sets of tumblers, a plurality of keys, and a pin tumbler lock for said keys adapted to operate said tumbler connector by means of one key but not by means of another key; substantially as described.

In a lock, the combination of a dead bolt, a fence, two tumblers ixedly pivoted to and carried by said dead bolt and cooperating with said fence, a key for giving one of said tumblers a complete actuation with respect to said fence, and for giving the other tumbler an incomplete actuation with respect to said fence, and a second key4 for giving both of said tumblers complete actuations with respect to said fence; substantially as described. v

In a lock, a dead bolt, a fence, a primary tumbler for said bolt coperating with said fence, a shut-out tumbler coperating with said fence to block the retraction of said bolt when said shut-out tumbler is shifted to a predetermined extent on the protraction of the bolt, a cylinder lock mechanism having a primary rollback to coperate with said primary tumbler, and an emergency rollback to coperate with said shut-out tumbler, and a plurality of keys for said cylinder lock mechanism, said cylinder lock mechanism constructed to shift said shut-out tumbler to the aforesaid predetermined extent by means of said emergency rollback when one of said keys is used, and to shift said shut-out tumbler to a less extent when another key is used; substantially as described.
24. In a lock, a dead bolt, a fence, tumbler mechanism including a tumbler which cooperates with' said fence to act as a shut-out device when said tumbler is shifted to a predetermined extent on the protraction of the bolt, a plurality of keys, and a cylinder lock mechanism constructed to shift said tumbler to different extents as said mechanism is actuated by dierent keys respectively; substantially as described.

In a lock, a dead bolt, a fence, a tumbler for said bolt coperating with said fence to act as a shut-out device when said tumbler is given a predetermined throw or movement, a plurality of keys, and a cylinder lock mechanism operable by said keys to protract the bolt and constructed to give said tumbler two diiierent throws as diiierent'keys are used; substantially as described.
26. In a lock, abolt, a fence, a variable throw tumbler to coperate with said fence, a variable throw cylinder lock mechanism for operating said tumbler, and aplurality of keys for actuating saidbolt through said cylinder lock mechanism,.said cylinder lock mechanism so constructed and arranged that one of said keys causes said tumbler to interlock with said fence so as to shut out the other keys; substantially as described.
27. In a lock, the combination of a case and boltage mechanism therein involving a pair of upper tumblers, a lower tumbler, and a tumbler connector connecting tumbler to which said connector `is connected, and a second key for operatively actuating all of said tumblers concurrently; substantially as described.
28. In a lock, the combination of a case, a boltage mechanism therein having a pair of upper tuinblers, and a single lower tumbler, a tumbler connector in the form of a vertically movable part connecting one of the upper tumblers with the lower tumbler, a cylinder lock, a key for said cylinder lock, adapted to operate the upper tumblers concurrently and simultaneously operate the lower tumbler through said tumbler connector, and a second key for operating the upper tumbler which is free from said tumbler connector without actuating said connector; substantially as described.
