LOCK.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES S. SncRovE,
of the city of New Haven, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates more particularly to looks having a latch bolt which is retractable by inside and outside manual retracting members respectively, suitable stop work or night latch mechanism being provided for dogging the outside retracting member when desired.
The primary objects of the invention are to provide improved means for dogging or deadlocking the night latch mechanism; to furnish means within the lock, operated by a key or otherwise, to throw into protracted osition a releasing night latch slide accessible through the face plate; to provide means which will not only actuate the releasing night latch slide to dog the outside manual retracting means, but will also deadlock said slide in its protracted position; to provide means to actuate the night latch mechanism from either side of the door; to construct a lock so that one of the manual retractingdevices for the latch bolt may be dogged and released from the face of the lock and dogged from either side of the lock; to furnish a construction in which the night latch mechanism may be moved from released to dogging position by the actuation of a dead bolt embodied in the lock; to provide alock in which one of-the night latch members associated with the latch bolt is bodily movable with the dead bolt as the latter is protracted; and to so construct and arrange the parts of the mechanism that the key which retracts the latch bolt from the outside of the door is operative from the same side of the door to actuate a dogging means associated with the manual retracting means for the latch bolt.
To these ends, and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel features and com binations of parts to scribed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of the lock the cylinder dog with tracting levers.
be hereinafter de- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 27, 1916 Application filed September 23, 1911. Serial No. 650,899.
with the cap plate removed, and with the dead bolt retracted and the latch boltprotracted, and withthe night latch mechanism out of dogging position. Fig. 2 is a similar view partly broken away of the lower part of the lock with'the'night latch 'mechanism dogging the outside hub. Fig.
3 is a similaryiew' to Figs. 1 and 2 with the night latch mechanism in dogging positlon, and with the deadbolt protracted. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, but with the deadbolt partly retracted by the dog of the cylinder lock which is operated by a; key from the outside. Fig. 5 is a view simllar to Flg. 4, .but with the deadbolt partly protracted through the medium of v and with the night latch dogging mechanism shown in a position the cylinder dog,
whereit is starting to-force the slide of said night latch mechanism outwardly, and with the locking slide of said mechanism shown as carried by such movement partly into engagement with the outside hub. Fig. 6- is a side View in elevation with the dead bolt retracted, and with the latch bolt retraced by means of the dog of the cylinder. Fig.7 is a detail side view in elevation of the upper part of the'lock with the tumbler 'of the deadbolt removed, and showing the deadbolt protracted. -Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 7 showing the cooperation of Fig. 9 is an edge view of the divided hub. Fig. 10 is a detail of one of the latch bolt retracting'levers. Fig.
11 is a. detail of the other latch bolt retracting lever, and Fig. 12 is-a detail of the deadbolt tumbler. I
In all figures, similarrepresent like parts. I
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the casing of the lock.-- Mounted within the casing is a latchbolt 2 having a shank 3. The shank is provided at its inner end with a head at adapted to be engaged by'a shoulder of' a sliding spring pressedyoke 5, which yoke is adapted to be actuated by the wings 6 of a hub, which is divided into an outer and inner part 7 and 8, respectively, each hub being connected to and controlled by a separateknob (not shown).
Mounted in thecasing and adapted to project through the faceplate secured thereto are thumb stop members 9 and 10 of which the. lower member is adapted to provide a letters of reference the latch bolt redogging or deadlocking device to engage a notch 11 formed in the outer hub portion 8 of the divided hub, so that when said slide 9 is pushed inward, the outside hub, and consequently the outside knob will be dogged against movement. The usual connecting lever 12 is provided between the slides 9 and 10, whereby upon pressing the slide 10 inwardly the slide 9 will be withdrawn from dogging engagement with the hub.
The deadbolt 1 1 is provided with a tumbler 15 which cooperates with the tumbler stump 16 projecting from the casing, and which has a projection 17. This projection is adapted to beengaged by the wings 19 of a hub 20 rotatably mounted in the casing and having a suitable actuating instrumentality, such as a thumb turn (not shown). The upper edge of the tumbler is provided with a projection 21 extending between the talons 22 of the dead bolt. The projection 21 and talons 22 are adapted to be engaged by a rotatable dog 23 of, a suitable cylinder lock of the usual type actuated by a key from the outside.
Carried by the deadbolt 1a is a spring pressed lever 2 1 having at its inner end a rounded shoe 25 (see Fig. 11) projecting inwardly from the lever. This shoe is adapted to bear upon the shoulder 26 (see Figs. 7, 8 and 10) of an elongated flat lever 27 lying against the rear wall of the casingand supported thereby and havingv its lower end projecting in front of the head 4 of the latch bolt in position 'tore tract said latch bolt when the lever is rocked rearwardly on its pivot.
The dead bolt let carries at its lower part a projection 13 located in line with the inner .end of the releasing slide 10 and movable in the same line as said slide. Thus when the bolt is protracted the projection 13 will be carried against the inner end of the releasing night latch slide, and if the latter is in its retracted position, said projection will force it outwardly thereby moving the dogging slide 9 in the opposite direction and carrying it into dogging engagement with the outside hub.
The operationof the device is as follows: The outside knob .and its hub may be dogged in the usual way by pressing in the slide 9. Assuming that the door has been shut and it is desired to lock the same against entrance and against tampering with the night latch mechanism, the hub 20 is turned by its operating instrumentality so as to protract the dead bolt 14, which movement is effected by the engagement of a wing 19 with the projection 17 of the tumbler,
whereby the tumbler is released from the stump 16 and carries forward the dead bolt. In the protraction of the bolt'the'stop projection 13 which is directly behind the slide 10 will be carried against the inner end of inner end of the slide the latter, and if said slide is retracted will force the same to protracted position, or if it is protracted will abut against its inner end, in either event, serving to block the actuating slide 10 in its outer position by the protraction of the bolt. To unlock the door from the outside, the cylinder dog 23 is rotated anti-clockwise as shown in Fig. 4, in which movement the dog will first enter between the upper talons 22 of the dead bolt and depress the tumbler so as to release the same, and then retract the dead bolt. To retract the latch bolt, the dog 23 after its retraction of the dead bolt is given a second rotation in anti-clockwise direction, whereupon it will be brought in contact with the lever 24 which has been carried beneath the dog by the retraction of the dead bolt, and the retraction of the latch bolt is effected by the engagement of the dog with said lever, as shown in Fig. 6.
The deadbolt is protracted and the night latch mechanism dogged from the outside by turning the dog 23 clockwise, as shown in Fig. 5, which movement carries the stop projection against the inner end of the slide 10 so as to force the latter outwardly and the stop abuts against the end of the slide to prevent the release of the outer knob. It will be seen that by the above arrangement the night latch mechanism when in released position will be set in position to dog the outside hub whenever the dead bolt is protracted, and will remain in dog ging positionafter the dead bolt has been retracted, thus insuring the operation of the night latch mechanism without the necessity of manually pressing the slide 9. It will be manifest that if the night latch mechanism is in released position it will not only be moved to dogging position by the operation of the thumb-turn at one side of the door or the key at the opposite side of the door, but it will also be effectively deadlooked as long as the deadbolt is protracted.
