This invention relates to pin-tumbler locks designed for master key work and is adapted particularly for installation in hotels, office buildings, etc. One object of the invention is to provide a lock, free of intricate systems of levers and bolt-controlling tumblers, which may be set to secure the occupant of a room against unwarranted intrusion but in which means will be provided to effect opening of the door from the outside in an emergency. Another object of theinvention is to provide means in such a lock whereby the lock may be so set from the outside that it can not be operated except through the use of the emergency key. Another object is to provide such a lock in which thebolt will be projected or retracted by a rotatable knobspindle which is normally locked and will remainlocked until released by key-actuation of a pin-tumbler plug. Another object of the invention is to provide a master-key lock of simple design in which the possible key changes available for master-key work w ll be practically unlimited. Other objects will appear incidentally in the course of the following description, and the invention resides in certain novel features which will be particularly defined in the appended claims.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section taken longitudinally of the lock and showing the same in a door;

Referring more particularly and in detail to the drawings, it will be noted that a casing 1 is set into the door 2 and extends through a cavity formed in the door to receive the lock. The rear or inner end of the casing is closed by a cap plate 3 while the front end thereof is closed by a face-plate 4:, it being noted that the casing is provided on its opposite sides at'its front end with dovetailed or similar grooves 5 and that the faceplate is provided with correspondingly shaped ribs or lugs .6 whereby the face-plate may be slid into engagement with the casing and the assembling of the parts facilitated. The face plate is also formed with a depending shank or extension 7 terminating in a circular enlargement 8 which provides a bearing for the knob spindle, the elements 7 and 8 constituting an escutcheon plate. The casing is provided at its front end with a depending tubular member 9 which is located directly behind the shank 7 and terminates in an eye 10 through which the knob-spindle passes, said member 9 constituting a guide and housing for the spindle-locking plunger 11 and having an opening 12 in the bottom of the eye 10 through which the plunger may be inserted in assembling the parts. The housing .9 is provided with a vertical slot 13 in its rear side in which a-lug14 on the plunger engages whereby rotation of the plunger will be prevented and the locking tooth 15,,
extending diametrically across its lower end,
will always be in operative position. The plunger is normally held to the spindle by an expansion spring 16 housed therein and bearing against the bottom of the casing, while at the upper end of the plunger is a lug or lip 17, alined with the lug 14, the pur pose of which will presently appear.
Upon reference to Figs. 2, 3 and 10, it will be noted that the bore of the casing has walls, this formation being particularly adapted to receive and house a plurality of slidable conventional pintumbler plugs 18 and a like number of conventional pin-tumblerhol-ders 19, the latter being fixed in place in any convenient manner. In the present illustration, five plugs and pin-holders are shown, and the face-plate 4 is formed with an opening 20 therethrough of proper form and location to admit keys to the several plugs, the walls of the opening being beveled and the bottom wall displaying the numerals 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, as shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 14, aligned with the respective plugs to identify the same. The keys 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25 will bear duplicate numbers so that they will be easily associated with the respective plugs, and will also bear legends indicative of their proper use or allocation, as Emergency, Shut out, Guest, Housekeeper and Maid. Slidably mounted in the upper end of the face-plate is a shutter 26, normally held lowered by a spring 2? which is arranged in any convenient manner to act on the shutter, the drawing showing it hearin g on a flange on the shutter which flange may rest on shoulders 28 formed on the front ends of the several plugs. The lower end of the shutter 18 formed centrally with a notch or recess 29 whereby the central plug is always exposed, this plug being operable by the Guest key. The tongues 30 by which the recess 29 is formed, normally cover the four plugs other than the Guest plug and, when one of the other plugs is to be'actuated, the shutter is raised by slight pressure applied to the lip or lug 31 at the upper end of the shutter.
The slot 13, at its upper end, communicates directly with a longitudinal groove 32 in the under side of the casing within which is pivoted the plungenretracting angle lever 33, the casing having recesses 34 in its under side to facilitate the insertion of the pivot pin. The lower arm, 35, of the lever projects forwardly with its end disposed in the slot 13 below and in position to engage under the lug 17 on the plunger, while the rear arm, 36, passes upwardly through a notch 37 in the rear end of the casing to a position at the rear of the plugs. At its upper end, the arm 36 is formed into a transverse head 38 extending entirely across the casing and adapted to be actuated by each of the plugs 18 except No. 2, which is called the shut-out plug, and, to clear the plug No. 2, a recess 39 is formed in the forward side of the head. A recess 40 is formed on the back of the head for a purpose which will be explained later.
The roll-back or cam by which the bolt is thrown or Withdrawn is not shown but is mounted in any convenient manner on a spindle which is operated by a front or outer knob 41 and an inner or rear knob 42. The spindle consists of a tubular section 43 to which the knob 41 is secured, and a section 44 fitting within the tubular section and to which the knob 42 is attached.
The tubular section 43 is formed with a longitudinal slot 45 in which the tooth 15 of the locking plunger is normally engaged so that, unless the plunger be actuated to withdraw the tooth from the slot, the spindle and the outer knob 41 cannot be rotated. The spindle section 44 is provided near its front end with a lug 46 which is adapted to impinge against the bottom of the plunger and force it from the slot 45 to permit rotation of the spindle, the lug at the same time engaging the wall of the slot so that continued rotation of the section 44 will be imparted to the section 43 and the bolt retracted. The lug 46 is normally seated in a recess provided therefor in the tube 43 and is held in the recess by a torsion spring 4? connected to the sections 43 and 44. It will thus be seen that the inner knob is always operative but the outer knob is normally inoperative and will not be operative until the locking plunger is lifted. To lift the plunger, the proper key is inserted in one of the plugs 1, 3, 4 or 5 and the plug slid inwardly or rearwardly to impinge against the head 38 and thereby rock the lever 33, the end of the lever effecting lifting engagement with the lip or lug l7 and withdrawing the plunger from the slot 45.
Pivoted within the casing above the lever 33, is a shut-out tumbler 48 which has a depending arm 49 normally lying at the front of the notch or recess 39 of the lever 33 just i behind the shut-out plug. Thus when the shut-out plug is pushed rearwardly, it will slide in the notch 39 without actuating the lever but will rock the tumbler 48 against the force of the tumbler spring 50. The tumbler is also formed with an arm 51 at an angle to the arm 49 and carrying ribs 52 arranged one in the plane of each of the plugs numbered 3, 4 and 5 so that when the tumbler is rocked the ribs will pass into notches 53 in the rear ends of the respective plugs to prevent the rearward movement of the plungers actuating the lever.
It will be noted that the portion of the tumbler corresponding to the shut-out plug No. 1 is a blank, that is, it has no rib 52, in the plane of the plug numbered 1 which is the emergency plug and is Operative at all times to reach and actuate the bell-crank plunger retracting lever 33.
The shut-outplug may be left in its rearmost position whenever it is desired to shut out the plugs numbered 3, 4 and 5. A pin 54 (see Fig. 2) at the rear end of the casing limits the rearward movement of the shutout plug, said movement being equal to the distance between two pins of the pin-tumbler lock. When the key is withdrawn, the tumbler pins will hold the plug locked, but when it is desired to withdraw the plug the key is inserted and will set up the pins to permit retraction of the plug to its neutral position, in the usual manner of a. push pin tumbler cylinder. The shut-out tumbler 4:8 is also provided with a radial pin normally projecting upwardly and rearwardly and adapted to be operated by the inside thumb turn 56, so that when the thumb turn is rotated the pin 55 will be swung upwardly and forwardly and the tumbler will be set in the shut-out position. Thus, by use of the inside thumb turn, it is possible to prevent entrance from the outside except by use of the emergency key.
The inside thumb turn is a cam head on the front end of a shaft 57 which is rotatably fitted through the cap 3 at the center thereof and has a handle 58 secured on its outer end, the cap being provided with an annular flange or rib 59 circumscribing the cam head and threaded into the casing. The cam head, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, is formed on its front side with a central raised body 60 having a cam surface 61 which engages the pin 55 to set the shut-out tumbler, and, at approX- imately a diametrically opposite position, has a substantially U-shaped recess or hook 62 in which is received a pin 63 on the upper end of a link 64 which plays in the recess 40 of the plunger-retracting lever. Said link 6-1 is pivoted to and rises from a crank 65 which is fitted on the knob spindle to rotate therewith so that whenever the inside knob is actuated to open the door the thumb turn will be returned to neutral position through the action of the pin 63 in engagement with the recess or hook 62 to release the shut-out mechanism.
The rear end of the tubular spindle section 43 is externally threaded and an escutcheon plate 66, which engages under the cap plate 3, has a hub 67 loosely fitted on the spindle section. A ringnut 68 is engaged with the spindle threads to secure the escutcheon plate in position and is received within a central recess 69 therein, the knob 42 having its hub member shouldered to fit in the outer end of said recess as shown clearly in Fig. 1.
The objects attained in my invention have heretofore been accomplished only by complicated mechanisms involving-intricate systems of levers and bolt-controlling tumblers, the cylinders of the lock forming a minor part of the general combination. In my present invention, the plug locks are the major part of the combination, and the variousshutout and emergency features necessary for hotel work are accomplished by the lock plugs, so as to obviate the need for complicated mechanisms which have heretofore been employed. By the use of a plurality of juxtaposed key locks, independently operable, I make it possible to obtain an almost unlimited number of key changes available for master-key work.
It will be understood that while I have shown and described one embodiment of the invention, I do not limit myself to the particular form shown as various modifications may be made therein Without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as the same is defined in the appended claims.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. A look mechanism comprising locking means, a plurality of key-operated elements independently operable to release said means, another key-operated element operable to render the first-mentioned elements inoperative, and another key-operated element constantly active to release said means.
2. A look mechanism comprising locking means, a key-actuated plug constantly operable to release said means, a plurality of keyactuated plugs operable to independently re lease said means, and means to render the last-mentioned plugs inoperative.
3. In a look, a locking member, a plurality of independent key-operated elements for opcrating said member, each of said elements having a keyway, a shut-out key-operated element operable to prevent operation of said plurality of elements, and an additional element for operating the locking member, the shut-out key-operated element being inoperative to prevent operation of said additional element.
4. In a look, a locking member, a plurality of independent key-operated elements inclividually operable to move in parallel directions to operate said member, a shut-out keyoperated element movable in the same paral lel direction to prevent operation of said plurality of elements, and an additional element similar to the plurality of elements for op erating the locking member, the shut-out element being inoperative to prevent operation of said additional element.
5. A look mechanism comprising locking means, a plurality of key-operated elements independently controlling said means, and means for rendering said elements inoperative.

9. A lock mechanism comprising a spindle, means for locking the spindle against rotation, key-actuated means for releasing said locking means, and manually operable means at the rear of the key-operated means to render the key-operated means inoperative.
10. In a lock, a locking member, a plurality of independent key-operated elements for operating said member, a shut-out key-operated element operable to prevent operation of said plurality of elements, and a cam device operable from the inside of the lock to prevent operation of said plurality of elements.
11. A lock mechanism comprising a spindle, means for locking the spindle against rotation, key-actuated means for releasing said locking means, manually operable means at the rear of the key-operated means torent er the same inoperative, and means operated by the spindle for setting said manually operable means in inactive position.
12. A lock mechanism comprising a plurality of slidable plugs operable by individual keys, and a shutter normally exposing a single plug and operable to expose all the plugs.
13. A lock mechanism comprising locking means, and a plurality of key-operated slidable plugs functioning while moving lengthwise to actuate said means.
14. A locking member, a plurality of locks of the push-in key plug type for operating said member when any one of said locks is moved lengthwise, the plugs. of said locks being arranged in juxtaposition.
15. A locking member, a plurality of pin tumbler push and pull plug locks for operatin g said member, said locks having independent key plugs arranged in physical contact.
16. In a lock, a locking member, a plurality of pin tumbler locks of the push and pull type for operating said member, said locks having key plugs individually operable, said plugs being of rectangular cross-section and alined in uXtaposed position, and adapted to move in parallel directions when operated to actuate said member.
17 A lock mechanism comprising a spindle consisting of a front tubular section and a rear section fitting within the tubular se ction, a plunger normally engaging the tubular section to prevent rotation of the same, a plurality of key-actuated plugs for individually retracting the plunger to permit rotation of the spindle from the outside, and a projection on the rear section of the spindle adapted to eject the plunger whereby the spindle is always rotatable from the inside.

A look mechanism comprising a spindle, a plunger normally engaging the spindle to prevent rotation thereof, a retracting lever arranged to engage the plunger and withdraw the same, a head on said lever, and a plurality of key-actuated plugs arranged to impinge upon said head and rock the lever to withdraw the plunger.
20. A lock mechanism comprising a locking member, a retracting lever arranged to engage said member and withdraw the same, a head on said lever, a plurality of key-actuated plugs arranged to impinge upon said head and rock the lever to withdraw the locking member, a shut-out tumbler arranged above said head, and a key-actuated plug arranged to rock said tumbler and interposc the same between the head and the first-mentioned plugs to render said plugs inoperative.
21. A lock mechanism comprising a locking member, a retracting lever arranged to engage said member and Withdraw the same, a head on said lever having a recess in its forward side, a shut-out tumbler above the head having a pendent arm resting in the recess in the head and another arm at an angle to the pendent arm, a plurality of key-actuated plugs arranged to engage the head and rock the lever, and a key-actuated plug alined with the pendent arm of the tumbler to rock the same to interpose the other arm in front of the head and render the series of plugs inoperative.

39. A look mechanism comprising a spindle, means for locking the spindle against rotation, key-actuated means for releasing said locking means, a shut-out tumbler at the rear of said key-actuated means, a manually operable disk at the rear of said tumbler having a cam surface engaging the same whereby to rock the tumbler and render said key-actuated means inoperative and having a hook element at a point opposite the cam surface, and a link engaged in said hook element and rising from the spindle near the inner end thereof whereby rotation of the r inner end of the spindle will return the disk rality of slidable plugs operable by indito normal position, the inner portion of the spindle being always rotatable.
40. A lock mechanism comprising a plurality of slidable plugs arranged side by side a and operable by individual keys, and a shutter mounted at the front ends of the plugs to normally permit access to a single plug and operable to permit access to all the plugs.
41. A lock mechanism comprising a pluvidual keys and arranged side by side, a shutter slidably mounted at the front ends of the plugs, constructed to normally permit access to a single plug and operable to permit access to all the plugs, and yieldable means holding the shutter in its normal position.

A look mechanism comprising a plurality of plugs operable by individual keys and slidably mounted side by side, a shutter mounted above the front ends 0]": the plugs for vertical sliding movement and having a central notch in its lower end permitting access to a single plug, the side portions of the shutter normally covering the ends of all other plugs, and yieldable means normally holding the shutter in lowered position.

A look mechanism comprising a spindle including an outer section and an inner section having a lock-motion connection therewith, a plunger engaging the outer section to prevent rotation thereof, key-actuated means for retracting the plunger to permit operation from the outside, and a projection on the inner spindle section for ejecting the plunger whereby the spindle may always be rotated from the inside.

In a lock, a locking member, a pinrality of tumbler locks equipped with push-- in plugs, said plugs being individually keyoperable to actuate said member, shut-out means operable by a push-in plug to prevent operation of said plurality of plugs, and an additional lock operating in like manner to the plurality of locks to actuate the locking member, said shut-out means being inoperative to prevent operation of the additional lock.
55. A look mechanism comprising a spindle, means for preventing rotation of the spindle, and a plurality of key-operated elements controlling said means.
56. A look mechanism comprising a spindle, means for preventing rotation of the spindle, and a plurality of key-operated slidable plugs controlling said means.
57. A look mechanism comprising a spindle, means to prevent rotation of the spindle, a plurality of key-operated elements independently controlling said means, and means for rendering said elements inoperative.
58. A look mechanism comprising a spindle, means to prevent rotation of the spindle, a plurality of key-operated elements independently controlling said means, and another keyoperated element operable to render the first-mentioned elements inoperative.

A look mechanism comprising a spin-' dle, means to prevent rotation of the spindle, a plurality of key-operated elements independently operable to release said means, another key-operated element operable to render the first-mentioned elements inoperative, and another key-operated element constantly active to release said means.
60. A lock mechanism comprising a spindle, means to prevent rotation of the spindle, a key-actuated plug constantly operable to release said means, a plurality of key-actuated plugs operable to independently release said means, and means to render the lastmentioned plugs inoperative.
61. A lock mechanism comprising a spin-- dle, a plunger normally engaging the spindle to prevent rotation thereof, a retracting lever arranged to engage the plunger and withdraw the same, a head on said lever, a plurality of key-actuated plugs arranged to impinge upon said head and rock the lever to wlthdraw the plunger, a shutout tumbler arranged above said head, and a key-actuated plug arranged to rock said tumbler and interpose the same between the head and the firstmentioned plugs to render said plugs inoperative.
62. A look mechanism comprising a spindle, a plunger normally engaging the spindle to prevent rotation thereof, a retracting lever arranged to engage the plunger and wlthdraw the same, a head on said lever having a recess in its forward side, a shut-out tumbler above the head having a pendent arm 7 resting in the recess in the head and another arm at an angle to the pendent arm, a plurality of key-actuated plugs arranged to engage the head and rock the lever, and a keyactuated plug alined with the pendent arm of the tumbler to rock the same to interpose the other arm in front of the head and render the series of plugs inoperative.
63. In a look, a locking member, a plurality of tumbler controlled locking plugs, each of said plugs being movable bodily when key operated, means for operating said locking member positioned to obstruct the free movement of said plugs when released, Whereby any one of said plugs when individually key operated and moved bodily will actuate said operating means.
