Description

G. N. MASON.
LOCK STOP PROTECTOR.
APPLICATION TILED MAR. 26, 1910.
Patented June 21, 1910.
To all whom. it may concern:
Q ran s'raawnnr QFFIQE GEORGE N. MASON, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO READING- HARDWARE COMPANY, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
LocK-s'roP PROTECTOR.
Be it known that I, GEORGE N. MAsoN, citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in thecounty of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new; and useful Improvements in Lock-Stop Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in looks and the object in the present instance is to provide means for insuring against interference with the lock stops of door latches and like locks. In locks of this class, the latch. bolt is controlled by means of a pair of stops or night latch buttons, which are operated from the outside of the lock and which project through the face plate. When these stops are set they will determine whether or not the latch bolt may be withdrawn by the turning of the knob. It frequently happens that these stops are interfered with, either intentionally or accidentally and it is to overcomethis interferencev that I have devised the present device.
. my construction I provide a plate adapted to cover and protect these stops and means for.
locking the plate so that interference, either intentional or accidental, is impossible.
The invention is more fully described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my lock with the locking plate open. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the face plate and locking plate, showing the locking means for the. locking plate.
The numeral 1 designates the lock casing which is of ordinary construction and is prousual construction in latches of this class.
In my present construction, when it is desired to control the latch bolt, the "stops are operated as usual, and I provide a plate 4, which is hinged at its top 5 to the face plate 2 and which covers the stops 3. This plate is formed with a tongue 7 and the face I Specification of Letters Patent.
plate is provided with 8 therefor.
In the rear of the face plate and secured thereto immediately below the main lock casing, I locate a latch or locking device 9 of simple construction, adapted to catch and lock the plate 4 in closed position in the face plate, thus protectingthe lock stops against interference and insuring it against intentional or accidental movement of the lock stops by any one other than those provided with means for unlocking the plate.
The latch 9 consists of a casing 10 inclos= ring a spring backed latch bolt 11 adapted to snap into the tongue 7 when the plate is closed, and capable of being withdrawn by means of .a key 13 which can be inserted in the cylinder 12. This cylinder is provided a registering opening with a pin 14, adapted to contact, when the cylinder is turned, with the offset 15 on the. lower end of the bolt 11 to retract it.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by- Letters Patent is -1. A protector for lock stops comprising a Patented June 21, 1910.
Application filed March 26, 1910. Serial no. 551,687.
3. A look comprising a casing, a latch bolt, stops for controlling said latch bolt, a plate adapted to cover the exposed ends of said stops and means for locking said plate in closed position.
4. In a look, a casing, provided with a face plate, a latch bolt, stops for controlling the action of saidlatch bolt, a locking plate hinged to the faceplate and adapted to protect said stops when closed, and alatch secured to the face plate and adapted to engage and lock said locking plate when in closed position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
