To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, MAX ARM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the cityof New York, borough of Manhattan, in
the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Look, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a lock, and has for an obj ect the provision of a lock in which the operation is extremely simple but in whichthe engagement-of the lock with the corresponding member on the door jamb is extremely effective. a i I Another object resides in the provision of means whereby the lock may operate either by a knob or by a key.
A further object resides in the provision of means whereby whenever the knob is used to actuate the lock bolt the connectionbetween the bolt and the key-operating means may be removed.
A still further object resides in the pro-' vision of a lock bolt of particular construction whereby adouble engagement between the casing on the jamb and the casing on the door is effected.
Another object resides in the particular construction of parts whereby the assembly of this look and its placement on a door is made in a very simple manner by reason of the construction.
A further object resides in the particular construction and arrangement of parts which are hereinafter described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings, of whichs Figure 1 is a vertical section taken on the line 11 of Fig. 3, showing the parts in the retracted position.
Fig.2 is a similar view showing the parts in their actuated positions.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The form of the invention shown in the drawings is a preferred form, although it is understood that modifications in the construction and arrangement of the parts and in the character of the materials used may be adopted without departing from the spirit of the'invention.
The invention is applicable to a door j amb 1 and a door 2. The door 2 is provided with the usual look aperture 3 in which a lock casing 4 is disposed. This casing is fastened into the aperture 3 in the usual man ner by a projection or pin6 from the rear face of the lock and the engagementthereof with a plate 5 onthe inner face of thedoor. A projecting member7 extends inwardly from the rear end of the lock casing and is adapted when th'ekey is inserted in thelock .to be actuatedthrough the intermediary 'of'the key barrel. The remainder of the mechanism is contained within a lock casing j 10 and 11 between which and the upper and lower walls of these casings a're'formed aper: tures 12, 13, 14:.and15 through which the lock .plate 18'extends to lock "the casing 8' 'to the casing 9. This lock plate 18 is in '8 disposed against the inner face of the door adjacent the jamb 1. i This casing cooperates the form of a curved arm connectedto a plate 17 pivoted at 16 for rotation within the casing .8. This plate 17 is curved-andprovided along its edge with spaced slots 19, 20,
21 and 22. The slot 22 is provided at one edge with an overhanging shoulder or flange 23. With these various slots in the edge of the plate 17 pins 24:, 25 and 26 are adapted to engage. These pins'are mounted on the face of a rotatable plate 27. This plate .is disposed in a recess 28 formed in a contact plate 29 of the casing 8. This contact plate is formed with an integral proj ecting pin or post 30 which forms a pivot pin for the plate 17 carrying the curved lock plate 18.
This plate 18 is provided, preferabl with V a triangularly-shaped aperture 31 t rough which a similarly-shaped stem 32 extends. This stem has a reduced portion 33 to which a knob 34 is connected. A shoulder 35 is formed on the stem 32 and between this shoulder and the casing 8 a spring 36 extends, tending normally to hold the stem 32 inwardly in engagement with the projecting member 7 extending from the keyoperated block 4:. This member 7 extends into a bore 37 formed in the end of the stem 32.
The normal retracted position of the parts is shown in Fig. 1. The movement of the key will cause the projecting member to turn in the stem 32 and by this rotation of the ,ther movement of the pin and the plate 27 out turning the proiecting member 7 related is vimpossible by reason of the interposition of this flange 23. Therefore, it will be apparent that the lock platecan be moved only so far and no farther.. Movement of the plate 27 in the opposite direction from that shown in Fig. 2, of course, Withdraws the bolt Within the casing 8.
If it is desired to actuate the plate 18 by reason of the turning of the knob 3a withwith the key lock 4, then, it is merely necessary to pull on the knob 34 and withdraw the end of the ,stem 32 from engagement with the projecting member 7. This Withdrawal is sufiicient to cause the disengage ment above mentioned but not suflicient to withdrawvthe stem from engagement With the plate 27. v
It will be apparent, therefore, that my iconstruction is s1mple,'economically manu factured,jeasy to assemble and correspondingly easy to repair; that the parts are few in number, strong and rugged in their construction and arrangement, and by having the curved lock plate it will be noted that the plate extends across the gap between the casings S and 9 at two points, thus effecting a double locking action.
hat I claim is:
l. A look mechanism which comprises a rotatable locking plate having a plurality of slots in its periphery, a rotatable actuating plate, pins on the actuating plate to sectionally engage in the slots in the first plate to move said plate, a knob stem engaging the second plate, and means permitting said knob to be slid axially with respect to said plate.
2. A look mechanism which comprises a rotatable locking plate having a plurality of slots in its periphery, a rotatable actuating plate, pins on the actuating plate to sectionally engage in the slots in the first plate to move said plate, a knob stem engaging the second plate, means permitting said knob to be slid axially with respect to said plate, a key-operated lock, and a projectingstem on the key-operated lock normally engaging with the knob stem but being disengaged. therefrom when theknob stem is slia axially as above mentioned, whereby the 'second' mentioned plate can be actuated by the knob alone when desired. i
