ERIC PETERSON,
OF BINGHAMTON, NEWV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO INTER- NATIONAL TIME RECORDING COMPANY, OF BINGIIAMTON, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
COMBINED LOCK AND- LATCH.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 719,691, dated February 3, 1903. implication filed November 14, 1902. Se i l N 131,301. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ERIC PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Binghamton, county of Brooms, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Lock and Latch, of which the following is a specification, refer ence being had to the drawings accompanying and forming part of the same.
My invention relates to latches of the kind which may be locked in closed position, and
has for its object to provide such a device which shall be simple and cheap in construction, but at the same time positive and efficient in operation. To these ends it consists of the novel features and combinations hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
A convenient embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view with a part of the casing broken away. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4. is a longitudinal section of the device in use, and Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
As illustrated, my device consists of a baseplate 1, having a flange 2 at one end and an opening surrounded on the under side by a lock-casing 3, preferably cylindrical in form and having the side opposite the flange cut away, as shown. On the base is a latch-plate 4, curved as shown, and carrying a hollow stud 5, journaled in the casing at 6 6, so that 5 the latch may be rocked on the base against the tension of a spring 7 to release the hook 8 from engagement with the part 9 of the receptacle to which the device is applied.
Rotatably mounted in the hollow stud is a cylinder 10, carrying a cam or eccentric 11. It is obvious that if the cylinder be turned to bring the cam or eccentric forward and against the wall of the casing, as in Figs. 1 and 2, the latch cannot be rocked on the base,
and the device is therefore locked. To effect hollow stud carrying a this locking, the cylinder is provided with a slot 13 to receive a suitable key 14, by which the cylinder or plug is revolved.
Thelock mechanism here shown is of course very simple; but it is clear that the slot and key may be made in a great variety of forms, and devices may be employed therewith to make the look more secure against opening by any but the right key.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. Ina combined lock and latch, the combination with a base-plate and a casing thereon around an opening, of a curved latch on said base having a hollow stud extending through said opening and journaled in the casing, and means rotatable in said hollow stud to lock the same against movement, as set forth.
2. In a combined lock and latch, the combination with a base-plate and a casing thereon around an opening, of a curved rocking latch on the base having a hollow stud extending through said opening and journaled in the casing, and a rotatable member in said stud carrying a cam or eccentric, as set forth.
3. In a combined lock and latch the combination with a base-plate and a casing thereon around an opening, of a curved rocking latch on the base having a hollow stud extending through said opening in the casing, and a rotatable cylinder in the cam or eccentric and having a slot to receive a suitable key, as set forth.
4. In a combined lock and latch, the combination with a base-plate, and a hollow casing, of a rocking latch having .a hollow stud extending into and journaled in the casing, and means rotatable in said hollow stud to lock the same against movement, as set forth.
1 ERIC PETERSON.
