Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OLOF F. Swanson, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in door locks, and has for its object the production of door locking mechanism which will be of improved construction, and effi Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,

The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings comprises a hinged door 1 provided at its free edge with a door lock 2 of conventional construction which is embedded or mortised therein in the usual manner. The lock 2 is provided with a rotatably mounted key-actuated barrel 3 which is operatively connected with the bolt 4 of said look so that upon rotation of said barrel, said bolt will be moved to or from looking position. Cooperating with the lock 2 are also handles or door knobs 5 which are operatively connected with the latch 5 in the usual manner.
Provided upon the inner side of the door 1 are two vertically extending locking bolts (5 which are shiftably mounted in guides 7 for movement into and out of engagement with sockets 8 provided at the upper and lower edges of the door, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The inner ends of the locking bolts 6 enter the upper and lower sides of a rectangular housing 8 secured to the inner side of the door adjacent the lock 2. Said ends of said locking bolts are connected with bars 10 arranged in the housing 9 and shiftably mounted in guide members 11. The arrangement is such, as will be seen, that movement of locking bolts 6 into and out of locking position is effected through shifting of bars 10. Said shifting of said bars is effected by means of a pair of oppositely projecting oscillatory arms 12 which are secured to a spindle 18 rockingly mounted in the housing 9, The outer ends of arms 12 engage with slots l l provided in the adjacent edges of bars 10, the arrangement being such that, upon oscillation of said arms, the same, through engagement with the slots 14, will shift the bars 10 in a direction dependent upon the direction of oscillation of said arms, it being clear that when said arms are oscillated in a clockwise direction, the locking bolts 6 will be moved to locking position, and that when said arms are oscillated in a counter-clockwise direction, said locking bolts will be moved to unlocking position.
The locking bolts 6 are held in lockmg or unlocking positions by means of tumblers 15 which are pivotally mounted at 16 within the housing 9. Each of said tumblers 15 is provided with an upstanding ear 17 adapted for engagement with notches 18 and 19 provided in the adjacent side of the corresponding bar 10. The arrangement is such that, when the locking bolts 6 are in locking position, the ears 17 will engage with the notches 18 to hold said locking bolts in this position and, when said locking bolts are in unlocking position, the ears 17 will engage with the notches 19 and thus serve to hold said bolts in this position. Helical compression springs 20 cooperate with each of the tumblers 15 to normally hold the same in operative relation with the bars 10. Said tumblers 15 are, however, so arranged that, upon rocking of the arms 12 into engagement with the notches 14, said arms will engage against the inner longitudinal edges of said tumblers and thereby serve to rock said tumblers to releasing position before the shifting of the bolts 10 takes place. This rocking of the tumblers 15 to releasing position is clearly shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
The inner end of the spindle 13 projects through an opening 21 provided in the adjacent side of the door 1 to engagement with the adjacent end of the barrel 3 of lock 2, said spindle 13 being arranged coaxial with said barrel. The inner end of said spindle is provided with a tongue 22 which releasably engages with a corresponding slot 23 provided in the adjacent end of the barrel 3, thus operatively connecting said bolt and spindle and whereby, upon rotation of barrel 3, through an engagement therewith of a key, the bolts 4 and 6 will be simultaneously actuated in order to simultaneously lock or unlock the door at all three points, namely at the center and lower and upper edges thereof. The outer end of spindle 13 is provided with a knob 24: for effecting manual rotation thereof or to facilitate engagement of the tongue 22 of said spindle with the slot 23 of the lock barrel 3 in the installation or attachment of the locking mechanism.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into efl'ect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
