Description

.I. F. SARGENT. Metaliir: Corner Shieids for Boxes.
No.140,080, Patentedlun e17,1873.
ITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JAMES F. SARGENCLOF MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC CORNER-SHIELDS FOR BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,080, dated J une 17, 1873 application filed May 26, 1873.
description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the same, and in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a box or receptacle, with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 illustrates a similar view of my invention, detached from the box, and Fig.
3 is a horizontal longitudinal section of Fig. 1, exhibiting the grooves in box to receive the fianges on the sides and bottom of shield or corner-piece. 1
Corresponding partsof the several figures are designated by like reference letters.
This invention consists of a shield or cornerpiece for boxes, 850., made from a suitable piece of metal in such a manner as to overlap the upper edge, and clamp or fit down against the inner side of the box, to fit up against and enter grooves in the bottom, and grooves in the sides of the box, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A refers, in the drawing, to a piece or plate of metal, bent or otherwise conformed to the shape of the corner of the box B. V This plate A is cut on its apex or corner with a V-shaped slit, of such a dimension as that, when the plate is adjusted to the box, its vertex or beginning will stand or be at the outer surface or corner, and its terminuses, when the prongs of the plate thus formed are caused to overlap the upper edge of the box, will meet at the inner surface of the corner of the box, as seen in Fig. l. The V-shaped slit from the points a a takes a vertical direction, as shown in the last named figure.
By thus con structin g the slit, the upper ends or tines of the plate or corner-piece A will be enabled to be brought together, as seen in Fig.
2, when the same are fitted or clamped down against the inner side of the box, and at the same time be allowed to stand at right angles to one another so as to fit the inner surface of the corner of the box. The plate A is again out on its corner, but near its lower extremity,
with an enlarged V-shaped slit, converting its said portion into tines or prongsa a which are fortified with flanges a a Through this construction, it will be seen that, when the tines or prongs of the lower end of the plate A are bent or fitted up against the bottom of the box, they are enabled to be brought together as shown in Fig. 2, and in a manner to fit flush against the bottom of the box, to which they are fastened by nails or otherwise, and by means of the flanges a a which take into grooves cut in the said bottom. Flanges a a are supplied to the edges of the vertical portion of the plate or piece A, and enter grooves cut in the side and end of the box B, for the purpose of fortifying its hold upon the box. Rivets or other suitable means are used in fastening the plate rigidly to the box.
This shield or corner-piece possesses great advantages, both as to economy and substantiality, it being constructed in one and of the same piece, and grasping the box at top, bottom, and corners.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s- The shield or corner-piece for boxes, &c., composed of the piece or plate A, adapted to fit the corner of the box, supplied with flanges a a and supplied with V-shaped slits or openings, substantially as shown' and described. i
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 22d day of May, 1873, in presence of two subscribing witneses.
JAMES F. SARGENT.
