Description
UNITED STATES qPATENT OFFICE JAMES S. LESTER, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN F. EDWARDS, OF SAME PLACE.V
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-PLACE GRATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,289, dated December 29, 1874,' application filed November 12, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JAMES S. LEsTER, of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and in the State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Grate Baskets; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speciiication.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a basket lire-grate, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my basket fire-grate, and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same.
My basketiiregrate is made in two seetions-a frontsection and a bottom sectionhinged together as shown. The front section is composed of two vertical side bars, A A, connected by a series of horizontal bars, B B, which are set inclined, as shown particularly in Fig. 2, so as to preventeven dust-coal from falling through, and at the same time be sufficiently open to allow the rays of heat to be thrown out in the room and in directions desired, and they will also, at the same time, present a better view of the tire to a person standing or sitting in any direction from the tire-place.
The bottom section, D, is made in any suitable inanner, with the front edge curved upward, and formed with a horizontal bar, O. The lower ends of the side bars A of the front section are joined to the front end ot' the bottom section D by bolts, rivets, or other suitable devices for hin gin g or attaching the parts together, in such a way and manner that when the basket is adjusted for use, the bottom D may be at any suitable angle for feeding the coal to the front and lowest point in the grate.
By the front section being hinged or conneeted to the bottom section, the grate may be cleaned of cinders, clinkers, or other residue left in the grate, by raising the rear of the bottom section, and thereby dumping or discharging them through and between the horizontal bar C of the bottom section, and the lower bar, B, of the front sect-ion. This motion may be obtained by pressing sufficiently on the horizontal bar O of the bottom section, or by lifting the rear of the lower section by hooking the poker in one of the notches, x, in the rear of the same.
Under the bottom section, D, isattached a sliding false grate or damper, G, which may be used or not, as desired. The object of the damper is to regulate the draft, or to check the draft from below, as desired-for instance, in` case of retaining the burning coal over night, Sac.
The tire-grate basket thus constructed may be made with circular front and bottom, or ot' other suitable shape; and it maybe attached to the ordinary fronts now in use, or on open front stoves in the same way that other baskets are attached, or by other suitable means.V
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, in a fire-grate basket, ot"
the side bars A, with inclined connecting-bars B B, the slotted bottom part D, provided with front bar C and notches x ai, and hinged to the lower ends of the side bars A A, and the damper G, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 31st day of October, 1874.
JAMES S. LESTER. Witnesses: i
C. C. HAMMOGK, RoBT. CRAWFORD.
