Description

JOHN MALUN.
Improv-ement in C0211 Aand Wood Boxes.
PatentedMay 2,1871'.
trumt iaie @sind effin,
Letters Patent No. 114,312, dated May 2, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN COAL AND WOOD-BOXES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MALLIN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal, Wood, Shovel, and rLongs-Box, of which thefollowing is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view.
r Figure 2 is a side view.
Figure 3 is an end View.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several views.
The nature of this invention relates to a combined coal, wood, shovel, and tongs-box, and the object thereof is to provide a neat and convenient receptacle in which to place coal, wood, shovel, and tongs, so that the same may be readily accessible for use.
Said receptacle consists of a box having compartments therein for coal, wood, and tongs respectively, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the aibresaid boxfand which is of au-` oblong square form. Said box is divided into four compartments, B, C, I), and E, the partition-walls being represented by the dotted lines et.'
The compartments D E are for holding wood and kindlings or other like materials,-whercas the compartment C is that intended for coal.
It will be observed that thc bottom of said compartment C is an inclined plane, extending from the upper edge oi' the front of the box or compartment C down to thc lower corner, forming a diagonal ot' the square ofthe compartment, as indicated by the dotted line b.
Said inclined plane also forms the ceiling ofthe cornpartrnent B, the door thereof being indicated by the dotted line c. Access is had to said compartment B through .the arch-like opening F, g. 3.
The compartments C D E are covered by the lids G G', hinged to the cross-piece H, and which, when raised, are supported iu that position by means of braces I, and secured, when closed, by hooks and eyes J or otherwise.
This box, as aforesaid, is for h'olding coal, wood, and shovel and tongs, the wood, Ste., being placed in thc compartments 1) E, and the coal in the compartment C, as above said.
The purpose of making the bottom of the coal compartment an inclined plane is for the convenience of shoveling up the coal and keeping the same closely together' for that purpose.
lhe compartment B is for the shovel and tongs, Svc., which are laid therein on the opr c.
The above-described box is placed near the stove or re-place, and is a neat article of furniture.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'Lhe herein-described coal, wood,- shovel aud tongsbox combined, when constructedwvith compartments B, C, I), and E, inclined-plane bottom b, opening' F, and covers G G', in the manner substantially as described and for the purposes specified.
