Description

June 5; 3923 W. E. BENSON COAL BOX Filed Jan. 18, 1925 mas-m4 Patented June 5, 1923.
UNlTEfE WADE ETHEL BENSON, OF BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA.
COAL BOX.
Application filed January 18, 1923. Serial No. 613,475.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WADE E. BENSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baton Rouge, in the parish of East Baton Rouge and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvement in Coal Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in coal boxes, and it is intended to provide a convenient and durable receptacle which may be used for supplying coal to open fires, stoves, ranges or the like, and also for storing away temporarily the ashes from the fire.
My invention comprises a sheet metal, provided with double drawers and hinged covers or doors, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
The invention will be more fully understood after reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved coal box with the parts in the closed position;
Figure 2 shows a side elevation of the device shown in Fig. 1 with the lid and the two drawers partly drawn;
Figure 3 shows a section along the line 33 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows;
Figure 4c shows a section along the line 4:-l of Figure 3 and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Like parts are indicated by similar reference symbols through the several views.
A represents the main body or casing o the box, which is preferably made of sheet metal, and is provided with suitable feet a to space the bottom of the same from the floor. This casing is provided with double bottoms B and B spaced apart, as shown most clearly in Figs. 3 and 4. The top of the box is closed by the hinged cover C. Mounted above the upper bottom B is a drawer D having shoulders near its forward end 03, and having its sides inclined at the outer end as at d. This drawer is closed at the rear, but is open at the front and is closed by the door E, which is hinged to the casing A by means of suitable hinges F, as shown cabinet made of most clearly in Fig. 1 This hinged door is provided with an overhanging edge e adapted to project beyond-the lower, proecting end of the drawer D, as shown most clearly in Figs. 2 and 3'. As an auxiliary means for holding the door E in the closed or in the lifted position, I provide lugs e' projecting from the side edges of the door adapted to engage the hooks H, which are pivoted to the sides of the casing Aas at 72. These hooks engage the lugs e and hold the door E in either the closed posi tion shown in Fig. 1 and in dotted lines in Fig. 2, or in the open position,.as shown in full lines in Fig. 2.
Mounted upon the lower bottom B is the ash drawer M, which is provided with shoulders m to prevent the drawer from be ing shoved in too.v far, and is also provided with suitable handles N, which are preferably composed of a metal strap secured to the front of the drawer by means of the rivets n. For convenience of lifting the same, the box may be provided with suitable handles P, preferably located near the top thereof.
In using the device, assuming the drawers to be both closed. fuel consisting of coal, coke or the like is put into the box through the top and rests on the bottom of the drawer D. In order to remove any of the fuel, the door E is lifted, as shown in Fig. 2, and sufficient fuel may be either pulled out of the projecting portion of said drawer, or an ordinary fire shovel or other convenient implement may be used to withdraw the fuel from the front of the drawer D.
When the box is nearly empty of fuel, the drawer D may be wholly or partly withdrawn, as shown in Fig. 2 It will be noted that the drawer M may be pulled partly out f and ashes from the fire may be placed in said drawer, and the drawer may be closed, without creating any unnecssary dust, and without any danger of setting anything on fire.
It will be noted that the fuel and the ashes will both be kept out of sight, and that the use of the device will insure cleanliness in the household' Moreover, the device may be made of an artistic construction, and more or less ornamental in use. The rectangular shape of the box will enable the same to be mounted ina corner of the room or by the fireside, and it will be out of the way and will take up very little floor space.
It will be seen that the device will be very durable and is not apt to get out of order,
and is especially adapted for the rough usage to which, such ,devices areordinarily subj ecte'd.
substantially vertical and having openings f at each ofrthe' bottomsrdrawers slidably fitted through said openings and resting upon said bottoms, the upper drawer adapted to While, I have described the invention in its preferred form, it will Joe-obvious that.-
various modifications may be niade which could be used without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I do not mean to limit the invention vto such details;- except as particularly pointed out in the claim.
-il lavingthusdescribed my invention, what I claim andvdesire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
' A coal box comprisinga casing having, a removable cover through which to admit the coal' and provided with two bottoms, one
spaced above the other, the front wall of the receptacle at and near said bottoms being receive the coal put in thriough theremovable cover, said upperdrawer having its entire front portion leftopen and having substantially triangular projecting portions at the front of its sides adapted to extend beyond the substantially vertical wall of the casing said substantially triangular projecting portlons being "enlarged laterally to engage the sides of the opening'in the casing the outer edges of said triangular portions being inclined fromthe topdownwardly and outwardly, a hinged door above the upper drawer and upon the-frontwall of the casing adapted to extend down in the diagonal sition across the open front ofthe upper drawer and adapted to rest against thein-.
