STAND FOB GARBAGE AD OTHER RECEITACLES. i
Patented Apr. et, 1915.
Application med Marchas, 1914. 4 serial No. 827,835.
T0 all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. SCHELL, a citizen of the4 United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stands for Garbagey and other Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a stand or supporting frame for garbage and similar receptacles, vand more particularly to stands of this character rovided at their top with a hinged cover or closing the receptacle,
and a treadle or foot-lever for opening the cover.
The purpose of my invention is to improve the construction of such stands and the cover-operating devices with a view \of simplifying them, reducing their cost of manufacture, and renderin them compact and neat in appearance, suc receptacles being often kept in vestibules, kitchens and other indoor places where space is limited.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a sectional elevation of a stand embodying the invention and showing the garbage receptacle in place therein. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the stand with the receptacle removed. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan View of the stand and the receptacle. Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross section of the lid-arm on line 4-4, Fig. 1.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views. v
1 indicates the metallic can or receptacle for the garbage, ashes or other material, which may be of any suitable form but is preferably straight or cylindrical,'as shown. It may have a bail 2 pivoted to fold into it, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The stand or frame which contains and supports the garbage receptacle l may be of any suitable construction, but vit is preferably of open or skeleton form, as shown in the drawings, to prevent the accumulation or lodgment of garbage therein and render the device sanitary. The stand shown in the drawings is of cylindrical form to correspond to that of the garbage receptacle and comprises an upper horizontal ring 3, a lower horizontal ring 4, upright suitable intervals, and braces 9 secured to and extending across said bottom ring 4 and forming supports for the receptacle. These bars are secured to said rings by rivets or other suitable fastenings and their.
1l indicates the lid or cover for the garbage receptacle 1 which is hinged at one side to the upper portion of the stand or frame and which in its closed position rests upon the open upper end of the receptacle, the latter extending a suiicient distance above the top ring 3 of the stand for this purpose.` The lid preferably has a depending marginal flange 12 which overlaps the receptacle and also an internal chamber or receptacle 13 adapted to contain a suitable disinfectant. This chamber is provided in its bottom with perforations 14 through Which'the disinfectant enters the receptacle, and in its top with a filling opening closed by a screw cap 15.
In the construction shown in the draw-l ings, the lid is provided at its rear side with a projecting arm or lug 16 which is pivoted at its outer end upon a horizontal hinge-pin or pintle 17 supported in eyes 18 carried by brackets 19 arranged on .opposite sides of said arm. These brackets are secured to the rear upright bars 6 and 7 of the stand which bars are closely spaced for this purpose, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3'? .The
brackets consist of horizontal lower portions and upright portions arranged at the outer ends of said horizontal portions and having their upper ends curled to form the eyes 18. As shown in Fig. 1, the arm 16 may be U-shaped or depressed below the top ofthe lid and the pintle l17 in the. closed position of the lid, so that the latter, afterv having been opened and released,`will have a tend# 'ency to drop forwardly upon the garbage receptacle. To stiifen or reinforce the arm 16, a brace 20 may be extended over the top thereof. In the construction shown, thls arm and its brace are formed in one iece by doubling a strip of sheet metal o the proper length around the hinge-pintle 17 and riveting or otherwise securing its 'su- Q l y 1,187,355
perposed branches or end portions to thelid,
` ranged underneath the raised bottom of the stand and fulcrumed between its ends on a horizontal pivot pin 23 carried by hangers l 24 depending from the braces or supports 9.
The front portion 25 of this lever which is engaged by the foot of the operator extends a short distance beyond the front side of the stand, while its rear end is connected with the lid-arm 16 by a thrust rod or bar 26 in such a manner that when the front end of the lever is depressed, the lid is opened, as shown by dotted lines in F ig. l., In the open position of the lid, the upper portion of'the thrust-bar bears against the underside of thelid-arm 16, forming a stop which limits the opening movement of the lid. In the construction shown in the drawings, the end portions of the thrust bar are reduced and passed through slots 27 and 28 in the lever and the lid-arm, the shoulders 29 and 30 formed by reducing said .bar bearing against said parts to transmit motion from the lever to the lid-arm. The reduced portions of this-bar may be confined in said slots by bending the ends of the bar at an angle, as shown in the drawings, or by other suitable means.
In the use of the device, the lid i's raised by depressing the foot-lever and the garbage y receptacle is placed in the stand. or frame. Upon releasing the lever, the lid drops to its closed position upon the receptacle by gravity, -making it unnecessary to manipulate the lid and rendering the device very convenient and insuring the closure of the receptacle at all times. Then filled the receptacle can be as readily removed, after opening'the lid.
Aside from the convenience and the sanitary construction of the apparatus, its lidoperating device is direct in action and comprises a minimumy number of parts, thus correspondingly reducing its cost.
I claim as my invention:
A stand for garbage receptacles and the like, comprising a frame constructed to receive and support the receptacle, a lid for said receptacle having a projecting arm hinged to the top of said frame, a single foot-lever pivoted between its `ends to the underside of said frame, and a thrust-bar pivotall connected at its lower end to the rear en of said lever and having its upper end pivoted to said lid-arm between the lid and the hinge-end of the arm.
Witness my hand this 24th dayof March,
CHARLES F. SCI-IELL.
