Description

' 1,639992 Aug 23. 1927 J. F. GEIBEL SANITARY WASTE GAN Filed Oct. '7. 1 925 'gigi-'14 Patented Aug. 23, 1927.
' Unir-*ao STATES JOHN F, GEIBEL, F BUFFALO, NEWl YOEK, AS SIGNOR T0 MASTER METAL PRODUCTS,
INC., 0F BUFFALO, NEW YORK,
SANITARY This invention relates generally to sanitary waste cans or garbage receptacles, but
more particularly to certain novel improvey ments in the cover or closure operating mechanism of such cans. l
One of 'its objects is to provide a coverlifting mechanism, which is simple, compact, strong and durable in construction, and which is composed of few parts, permitting its 'manufacture at a reasonable cost.
Another object of the invention is to provide a foot-operated cover lifting mechanism having reliable means for' cushioning or yieldingly resisting the'opening of the cover beyond a predetermined point and also for insuring its prompt return to closed position.
ln the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a garbage'receptacle constructed in accordance with inyinvention. Figure 2 is l5 Fig. 2. Figure 5 is a perspective view of the yieldable cover stop or spring.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
ln the preferred embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, the same coinprises an outer can-body or container 1() of cylindrical form, open at'its ends, and constructed of sheet metal or other suitable material. Removably contained within the can-body is a receptacle 11 in the form of a pail for receiving the garbage or other waste materials, the same having a bail 12 pivoted to fold into it.
The upper end of the 'can-body 10 is provided with a vertically swinging cover 13 to the rear side of which a strap 14 is secured, said strap having a pair of depending hinge lugs or ears 15 which engage a horizontal hinge-pin 16 supported on a pair of similar hinge lugs 17 projecting rearwardly from a bracket 18 attached to the rear side of the can-body, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4.
Located at the lower end of the can-body iis a combined supportand actuating device for the receptacle l1 and cover 13, respectively, said device serving to properly support or sustain the receptacle within said can-body above the floor, as shown in Fig.

1, and to raise the cover to its open posi` tion, shown by dotted lines in the same .iig-V ure. To this end, this device is preferabl 'in .the form of a horizontally-disposed osci lating member or rock shaft 19 located eccentricA to or at one side of the center of the can-body and supported near." its ends in bearing- openings 20, 20 formed in the latter. That portion of the shaft contained within the can-body subtends a suliicient ortion of the curved wall thereof to reliab y support the receptacle in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. At its rear end, this rock shaft has an offset curved portion or crank'arin 21 extending transversely of and part way around the can body in proximity thereto and terminating in a rearwardly-facing end portion 212L disposed substantially radially of said can-body and below the hinge-pin 1G. 'IL his crank arm is connected by an upright link 22 with an extension 23 projecting from the rear end of the cover hinge strap 14; the upper end of said link having a loop 24 engaging an opening 25 in said extension, as shown in Fig. Li. The front end of the rock shaft 19 terminates in a forwardly-facing crank-arm 26 having a pedal 27 attached thereto. When the latter is depressed, the
' shaft is oscillated. in a direction to cause its crank 21 to pull downward on the linlr 22 and open the cover, as indicated by Idotted lines in Figs. 1 and a.
It will be noted that the rock shaft 19 extends substantially 'from the front to the rear end of the can-body with the crank arms 21, 26 located approximately atfrig-h't angles to eachother andatan obtuse angle to the shaft. This arrangement not only permits the ready mounting of the shaft onthe can-body but it brings the pedal at the front portion of the can-body where it eirtends forwardly 'toward the user and is in a position to be conveniently operated.
For the `purpose Aof cushioning or yieldingly resisting the opening movement of the cover beyond a substantially forwardly inclined position and also for insuring its prompt return to closed position when the pedal 27 is released, a yieldable stop is provided. As shown in Figswi and 5, this stop is preferably in the form of a fiat spring 28, approximately Z-shaped in cross-section, which passes intermediate its ends around the upper side of the hinge-pin 16 and occupics the space between the depending lugs l5 ol' the hinge-strap 14. The upper portion :35) ot' said spring passes through the openiug 25 iu the strap-extension 23 aud is bent upwardly over the adjacent upper sido thcrcol'. while its lower portion or tail 3() normally extends downwardly and rearwardly a suitable distance beyond the lugs l5.
When the cover 13 is opened, this tail encounters the lower end of the transverse bar or web 31 of the hinge-bracket 18 and yieldingly resists the o ening of the cover to a point beyond its fu crum, thus not only preventing danger of the cover remaining open due to neglect of the user but always insuring its quick return to closed position Furthermore, the spring 28 is so. mounted that no separate fastenmgs are required to hold it in place and also that it offers no resistance until the cover practically reaches its fully opened position, thereby permitting the easy and ready opening of the cover with very .little effort.
This improved cover-operating mechanism for sanitary waste cans and the like is manifestly simple, compact and inexpensive in construction, it is neat and sightly in appearance, and its actuating parts are located close to the can-body and wholly at one side thereof, whereby the can can be placed against the wall or in a corner convenient for use without interfering with the opening and closing movements of the cover.
