(01 220-36) My invention relates to shells which are placed over trash cans, waste material cans etc. which are open at the bottom for said purpose and are closed when not opened by mechanism.which permits of insertion of material being inserted through the shellcovers to fall into the trash cans lying within- Such a device is ornamental in shape, and completely covers the can.
In the particular form shown the top of the cover structure is generally of dome shape with a. segmental inset at the rear of which is the opening, said opening being closed by a gravity door, hinged above it. The door is operated by a foot treadle on the outside of the shell, and at the side thereof. The problem involved is to provide a strong and simple device for operating the door, not subject to being bent out of shape by careless operation and which can be simply mounted in such a wayas not to interfere with placing the shell of the device over a trash can.
In the drawing I have shown a typical structure which will illustrate an example of my in- :vention, the patentable features ofwhich will be of Fig. 2.

The inner container or trash can is indicated in the drawing at I. The outer cover has, in this casing has sides 4, 4 which need not be parallel, a bottom 5, and a top 6, which are in each instance suitably flanged and engaged with the dome shape shellexcept for the bottom 5 which is flanged and shaped to fit over the top of the shell 2. The mode of mounting this casing is not an essential. It may be made of bright metal and the flanges form a decorative border about the opening in the preferred form. The word segmental is used in a general sense, meaning the result of cutting a four sided opening in a hemispherical body. A polygonal angle would be more accurate perhaps.
The back of the casing is closed by a door I which is hinged at 8 to the top of. the inset casing. The side walls of the casing are sloped (see Fig. 4) so that the door hangs by gravity snugly against the sides and bottom of the casing. To insert material into the casingthe door is swung inwardly and rearwardly, leaving an access opening through which material inserted will fall into the trash can within.
'The mechanism for swinging the door is mounted on one of the sides 4 of the inset casing. This permits of an operating arm being dropped down vertically to the lower end of the wheel for engagement with a foot pedal arm in a position close to the sides of the shell.
A bell crank lever 9 is secured pivotally on the side 4, which is selected. One of the arms of this bell crank i pivotally connected to the operating arm III which extends down along the side of the shell, as already indicated. The other end of the arm contacts with one of the arms of another bell crank II, the upper end of the other arm of which is bent over to form a hook I2. Projecting from the one end of the door at its upper portion is a fixed finger [3 which is bent at l4. The hook l2 engages over this bent finger, and when the bell crank I I is] rocked the hook will cause the door to swing open. This rocking takes place when the operating arm is depressed. This depression rocks the bell crank 9 to lift its free arm, which engages the free arm of the bell crank H moving it in an upward direction. This moves the hook rearwardly, and the finger is so oriented and shaped that this rocks the door on its hinged connection. Release of the operating arm permits the door to close by gravity.
As a simple way for connecting up a foot treadle (Fig. 6), I provide a treadle I5 which is mounted on a. bent rod l6 that is thrust through a hole [5a in the shell. The rod has integral threaded portion. A disc 2! having an car 22 for connection with the operating arm, is slotted as at 23 so that it can be thrust over the threadedj end i9 with the slot engaged by the 'ribs' 28 to make a fixed or non-rotary connection, and a nut and Washer 24 screwed over the said end" f9.

In a trash can covering device the combination with an inset casing having a door at the inner end, means for hinging the door at its upper end so that it closes by gravity, and a lever device for operating the door comprising an arm on the door, a bell crank having its long arm engaging the door arm, another bell crank the short arm of which engages by abutting against the short arm of the first bell crank, and an operating Yrod connected to the long arm of the second bell crank, the engagement of the first bell crank with the arm on the door'being effected by a hook on By this arrangement the whole pedal assem bly in one piece can be thrust in place, the operating. arm pivotally connected by a suitable 'pin to the'ear of the disc, and the disc slipped into place and bolted down by the nut; There is nothing to bend out of shape, a quite adequate bearing is supplied, and the amount of movement of the pedal will be ample to swing the .door in the dome of the device open for readyinsertion of any. waste material.
Having thus described an example'of my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A trash can cover device having a shell open at the bottom for engaging over a trash can, said shell :having at its upper portion a closure, a
casing inset into the-closure, having inwardly sloping, edged sides and .a bottom portion, a door constituting-the rear portionof the casing, means for hingin'gthe' door at the top of the said inset .casing so as to engage the sidesand bottom by gravity, a foot treadle projecting pivotally' at the lower portion of the shell, and connections from the foot treadlexto the door for opening the door upon movement of the foot pedal, said means including an operating; rod extending downwardly through the shell from a position above the top of theaenclosed. trash can in a position close to the side of the shell so as not to interfere with thcipositioning and removal of the cover from the trash can;

3. In a'trashcan covering device the combinaon the door, a'bell crank having .its long arm engaging the door arm, another bell crank the short'arm of whichengages by abutting against the short arm of the first bell c'ra'nk,'and an opthe bell crank.
5. A foot treadle assembly foractuating an access door in atrash receptacle or the like, comprising a bracket within the receptacle having a bearing therein, a treadle, an arm fast on the treadle arranged to fit into the bearing, said receptacle having "a hole for insertion of the arm which carries a bearing member, a rocker plate mounted on said bearing .member having connection for an access door operating rod, and threaded means for mounting the plate on the inner end of the arm beyond said bearing, the plate and bearing having key and slot engage- ,ment.
6. A foot treadle assembly for actuating an access door in a trash receptacle or the like, comprising a bracket within the receptacle having a bearing therein, a treadle, an arm fast on the treadle arranged to fit into the bearing, said receptacle having a hole for insertion of the arm which carries a bearing member, a rocker plate mounted on said bearing member having connection for an access door operating rod, and threaded means 'for mounting the'plate on the inner end of the arm beyond said bearing, the plate and bearing having key and slot engagement, said threaded means comprising threads on the end of the foot treadle arm, and a nut for engaging said threaded end to hold the plate against the bearing member on said arm.
