CLOSURE ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed August 25, 1917. Serial No. 188,198.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. MoIN- TYRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mist, in the county of Columbia and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Closure Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my present invention is the provision of a can cover capable of rotation on a can and provided with a spoon attachment that is yieldingly pressed downward incidental to rotation of the cover, and is thereby enabled to fill itself with substance in the can so that when the cover and spoon are removed, as a unit, from the can, the spoon will be charged with substance.
Another object of the invention "is to utilize the means for yieldingly pressing the spoon, to move said spoon to a position at approximate right angles to the cover when the, cover is removed from the can, so that the filled spoon will be positioned relatively to the cover in readiness for use.

Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the closure with the attachment illustrated in folded position.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, 5 denotes a can in the form of a shallow box primarily adapted to contain a quantity of snufl 6, and mounted on the open upper end of the box or receptacle is a cover or closure 7. Provided around its peripheral edge is'a depending flange 8 frictionally engaging with the exterior portion of the box, but capable of rotary movement, for a purpose to be hereinafter clearly specified.
Carried by the inner face of the closure 7 is an attachment indicated generally by the character 9 and capable of removing a quantity of the contents 6 from the box when the use of the same is required. To this end, the attachment 9 is pivotally mounted in the spaced bearings 10 for a downward and outward swinging movement.
The member 11, here shown as a spoon, is constructed from a single blank of metal bent to provide a bowl 152 formed on one end thereof with a shank 13, which is terminally bent to provide a loop 14: mounted on the pivot 15 journaled in the bearings 10 of the closure. The pivot in this particular instance embodies a single strand of resilient material, comprising a shaft 16 provided at one end with an inwardly extending resilient arm 17 while at its opposite end the shaft is bent in a direction toward the arm 17 and in overlapping relation therewith to provide an actuating arm 18. The arm 17 is connected to the closure as at 19, while the actuating arm 18 overlies and contacts with the shank 13 of the member 11, consequently,
as the cover 7 is lifted or removed from the box, the resiliency of the actuating arm 18 will cause the member 11 to be automatically thrown to a position at right angles with respect to the closure and facilitate the use of the contents.
' In briefly describing the operation of the invention, it is to be stated that the lip 20 of the bowl 12 will collect a quantity of the contents, upon the partial rotation of the cover 8, and during this operation, the cover is partially removed from the box and with care in removing the cover, the user will have access to a quantity of the contents contained in the bowl 12, after the cover has been fully removed from the box.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of construction and the method of operation will be readilyapparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, and while I have described the principles of operation of the invention, together with th device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed as new, is
The combination of a can, a cover rotatable on and removable from the can, a spoon hinged at one end to the cover at the inner side thereof, and a spring connected and arranged to yieldingly press the spoon against the contents of the can during rotation of the cover, and to move the spoon to a position at an angle to the cover when the cover is removed from the can.
