1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in strainer caps, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herein described which may be conveniently and eflectively employed in association with Mason jars, or the like, for the straining of used fat preparatory to storage for subsequent use and which is adapted to facilitate subsequent removal or dispensing of the fat from the jar.
A further object of the invention is to provide a strainer cap which is simple in construction and which may be easily applied to jars of various types.
Another object of the invention is to provide a strainer cap which may be easily kept clean and which will not easily become damaged.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a strainer cap which is pleasing in appearance and which will readily lend itself to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects in View, and such other objects as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a cross sectional view of the invention in situ on a jar, showing the same in the closed position, and
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the invention, the cover used therein being shown in the open position.
Like characters of reference are used to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a strainer cap designated generally by the reference character 5, the same embodying in its construction an annular cap member 1 formed with suitable screw threads 8 whereby it may be conveniently mounted upon the neck of a conventional jar 9, such as for example, a Mason jar.
A gasket in may be interposed between the upper edge of the jar and the flange ll of the cap member, the latter defining a circular opening I 2.
A substantially semi-spherical screen I3 is positioned in the opening i2, the upper edge portion of the screen being secured to a marginal rim Hi. This rim may simply assume the form of a wirelike rod arcuated into substantially circular form, the mid-portion of the rod forming a U-shaped finger piece IS. The end portions iii of the rod are bent into axial alignment and extend in relatively proposed directions, as is best shown in Figure 2. The flange H of the cap member 1 is provided on the underside thereof with a pair of spaced bearings [1, the end portions I6 being rotatable in these bearings in the manner of hinge pintles, whereby the rim l4 and the associated screen i3 are hingedly connected to the cap member.
The latter is also provided at the periphery thereof with an upstanding bracket l8, and a circular cover I9 is hingedly connected to this bracket, as indicated at 20. The cover i9 is registrable with the screen 13 and. is provided on the upper surface thereof'with a suitable handle or knob 2|.
When the invention is placed in use, the strainer cap, as a 'whole, is applied to the jar 9 as has already been explained, and by simply opening the coverl9 to the position indicated by the phantom lines 22, the used fat may be poured into the jar 9 through the screen l3.
When it is subsequently desired to dispense the fat from the jar, the cover 59 is again opened and the screen I 3, together with the associated rim M, are also opened, as indicated by the phantom lines 23.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing description and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is considered unnecessary,
While in the foregoing there has been shown a and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as my invention is:
A strainer cap comprising in combination, an annular cap member adapted for positioning on a receptacle and including a circular opening, a substantially semi-spherical screen positioned in said opening, a wire rod secured at the edge of said screen and constituting a marginal rim, a U-shaped finger piece formed medially the length of said rod, the end portions of said rod forming a pair of hinge pintles and being rotatably attached to said cap member, a cover also hinged to said member, said cover being registrable with said screen, and a handle provided on said cover.
