To all whom it m 03 concern Be it known that I, FRANK WELuxo'rox DOWNS, a citizen of the United States. and a resident of Washburn, in the county of Bayfield and State of Wisconsin, have inventegil a new and useful Improvement in Hinged Covers for Containers, of which the followingwis a full, clear, and exact description.
y invention relates to improvements in hinged covers for containers, and it consists in the combinations,constructions, and arrangements herein described.
An object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described having a bin ed cover in which the cover may be move down and locked, though an obstruction may be disposed intermediate the cover and the opening of the container, Without injury to the cover or container.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described having a cover, in which the cover may be closed and locked or opened with one hand.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is extremely durable. and which may be manufactured cheaply.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularl pointed out in the appended claims.

In carrying out my invention, I make use plunger for of a jar 1 which may be of any suitable materiahsuch as porcelain, metal, fiber, or the like. The jar 1 is provided with an upwardly extending rim 2, substantially as shown in Figure 1.
A metal band 3 is placed about the container 1 and is bound together at its ends 4 and 5 by means of binding screws 6. Theband 3 'is preferably of metal which will not rust or tarnish readily. Referring now to Figure 3, the portion of the band at the point 7 is provided with a downwardly extending portion 8 having at its lower end a horizontal flange 9 through which a small opening 10 is provided. Directly opposite the portion 8 on the upper edge of the band is an upwardly extending portion 11 having perpendicular sides 12 and 13 on each side thereof. The sides 12 and 13 extend upwardly above the top 1-1 of the portion 11 to a point above-the cover 15, substantially as shown in Figure 1.
The upper ends of the sides 12 and13 are rounded and each have adjacent the edge thereof aw vertical slot 16. A transverse shaft 17 is rotatably disposed in the slots 16 and is carried by a rearwardly extendingprojection 18 of the cover 15. The. cover 15 may material.
At the outer edge of the projection 18 is provided a small ball 19 which is integral therewith and to which a tension spring 20 is connected. The opposite end of the spring 20 is passed through the opening 10 in the horizontal flange 9.
A rubber gasket 21 is disposed on the inner surface of the cover 15 and is adapted to register with the rim 2 of the container 1. The purpose of the gasket 21 is to hermetically seal the container.
A metal tube 22 is soldered or otherwise fixed to the band 3 at the front of the container 1 and is arranged to extend up adjacent to the upper edge of the rim 2. The tube 22 contains a plunger 23 having a trans verse pin 24 therethrough. The pm 2 1 18 arranged to pass through slots 25 on each side of the tube 22, which slots limit the upward movement of the plunger 23. A spring 26 is disposed beneath the plunger 23 and is supported within the tube 22. The purpose of the plunger 23 is to push the cover 15 up when it is released, which is often necessary, especially when adhesive material is kept in the container.
A spring latch member 27 is provided and is supported upon the tube 22 so that when the finger grip 28 is pressed therefrom, the cover 15 may be released from its engagement with the container 1.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. The container 1 is especially suitable for substances such as glue, cold cream, or the like, and for any substance whereit is often desirable to open and close the container and where only one hand to do so is available.

When this is done, the tension spring 20 will tend to forcefully hinge the cover 14 back on its fulcrum or transverse shaft 17. The plunger 23 will aid materially in separating the cover from the rim in cases where the substance contained therein is sticky or of an adhesive nature.
Should an obstruction, such as a paper clip or the like become fastened to the rim 2, the cover 15 can be closed without injury thereto owing to the fact that the slot 16 would permit an allowance in the relative positions of the cover 15.and the rim 2 suificient to accommodate the clip or obstruction. When glue is used in the container, it is a common thing for the rim 2 to become coated with the glue and this also would present an obstruction which would be accommodated by the slot 16.
Obviously, this hinged cover may be applied to various forms of containers and its application should not be limited to a container such as shown in the accompanying drawing.
While I have here described the device as being clamped to a jar or container, it should be understood that the clamping band 3 could be provided with threads and screwed upon the container or jar adjacent the mouth thereof. This I deem entirely within the scope and spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. The combination with a container having an open mouth, of a supporting band secured about said container adjacent the mouth thereof, a pair of vertical bearing members integral said band, each of said bearin members being provided with a vertical s ot adjacent the upperv edge thereof, a cover to seal saidmouth, said cover being provided with a rearwardly extending portion having a transverse shaft carried adjacent the outer end thereof, said transverse shaft being mounted at each end in said slots, and a tension spring connected at one end to said rearwardly extending portion of said cover and at its other end to said band.
2. The combination with a container having an open mouth, of a supporting band secured about said container adjacent the mouth thereof, a pair of vertical bearin members integral said band, each of said bearing members being provided with a ver tical slot adjacent the upper edge thereof, a cover to seal said month, said cover being spring pressed plunger disposed on said.
band and adapted to press against said cover at the front edge thereof when said cover is closed, and a spring actuated'clasp for locking said cover in a sealed position.
3. Thecombination with a container having an open mouth, of a supporting band removablysecured about said container ad: jacent the mouth thereof, a pair of vertical bearing members integral said band, each of said bearing members being provided with a vertical slot adjacent the upper edge thereof, a cover to seal said mouth, a rubber gasket carried on the under surface of said cover and adapted to register with the mouth of said container, said cover being provided with a rearwardly extending portion having a transverse shaft carried adjacent the outer end thereof, said transverse shaft being mounted at each end in said slots, a tension spring connected at one end to said rearward-1y extending portion of said cover and at its other end to said band, a spring pressed plunger disposed on said band and adapted to press against said cover at the front edge thereof when said cover is closed, and a spring actuated clasp for locking said cover in a sealed position.
4. A device to the character described comprising a metal band adapted to be supported upon a container. ad acenttlie mouth thereof, a pair of parallel aring members extending upwardly from said band, each" of said members having a vertical slot adjacent the upper edge thereof, a cover adapt ed to fit said container, said cover having a rearwardly extending portion integral therewith, a shaft carried transverse said rearwardly extending portion and pivotally mounted in said vertical slots, and a tension spring disposed intermediate the outer edge of said rearwardly extending portion and said band.
