GOMIBINED HANDLE AND COVER FOR CiltliilS.
Application filed February 25, 192%. Serial No. .aaaaaa To (all whom it may concern 3e it known that T, Murliras Warm, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwa'ukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful lmprovements in. Combined Handles and Covers for Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an attachment for syrup cans and the like, the general. object of the invention being to provide a handle and cover for the can, so that it can be used for pouring out small quantities of the contents of the can. thus making the can capable of being used as a table or kitchen article.
rlnother object of the invention is to so form the parts that they can be removed from one can and placed on the new onewhen the old can is empty.
This invention also consists in certain other features of constriuztion and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the apppendeijl claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reterence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the invention in use.
lligure 2 is a plan view.
l il'ure 3 is a sectional detail view.
In these views A. indicates a can in which syrup, molasses and the like, is usually retailed. This can is provided with a cover 40 which is to be removed so that the contents of the can' tan be emptied theretrom. The contents are placed in a pitcher or the like so that small quantities can be used and it is the object of my invention to provide means whereby the can itself can be used a pitcher.
Tn carrying; out my invention 1 provide a lid 1 which is to be substituted for the cover of the can. said lid being provided with the flange 2 which fits in the opening in the top of the can and is held therein by friction. The lid 1 is provided with a spout 3 which is normally closed by means of the cover plate 4. which is pivoted to the spout and 5.5 which is provided with a rear extension 5 which terms a handle :tor permitting the cover l. to be opened. Dependingirom the extension 5 there is a stud 5 lying directly above a similar stud 5" and having its end convolution engaging the extension 5 and the lid respectively, there is a coil spring 6' which holds the cover plate normally closed through the medium of pressure exerted upon the extension. A handle (5, preferably liormed of wire. is hingedly secured to the top of the lid 1 by means of the strap 7 and said handle is provided with the jaw parts 8 which are designed to grip the can to holdthe device in place. The wire forming the handle 6 is bent and twisted, as shown, to strengthen the same and form the handle part and gripping jaws.
It will thus be seen that the attachment can be easily and quickly removed from one can and placed on another and that when placed upon the can the can can be used as an ordinary pitcher and the contents will be covered and thus kept pure.
it is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel Features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that T may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What 1 claim. is 2- An attachment for cans comprising a lid so designed to constitute a cover tor the can, a flange depending); from adjacent the edge of the lid and adapted to be held in trim.
tional engagement around the peripheral edge oi the top ot the can, a spout projecting upwardly from the lid adjacent one side ,jhereot and at an inclination therefrom. a. cover plate normally closing the spout and being; pivoted thereto. anextcnsiou 'loriucd rearwardly on the cover plate to permit the opening thereof. a stud depcndiin); from the enten.. 1on. a similar stud l'lb'lllg' l n the lid directly below the lirst mentioned :3; 1 d but spaced therefrom, a coil 1;); ends surrounding the respective studs an]. is: end conrolutions engagin; the lid and the extension respectively to hold the cover plate 1 normally closed through the medium of the pressure exerted upon the extension and supporting means carried by the lid as and tor the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
