(Cl. 222--570) This invention relates to pouring spouts and it is more particularly concerned with a pouring spout that can be removably applied to a can of paint or the like to facilitate emptying the contents of the can.

An object of the invention is the provision of a pouring spout that can be quickly applied and securely held on the can.

Another object of the invention is to provision of a pouring spout which is removable from a can to which it has been applied and which can be reapplied over and over again to the same or other cans.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a pouring spout having attachment means related to the features of a conventional paint can.

Still further objects and advantages of the invention will appear more fully from the following description considered together with the accompanying drawing.

In the drawing:

FIG. 1 is a front elevational view of an embodiment of the invention applied to a conventional paint can.

FIG. 2 is a side elevational view of the embodiment as applied to the can.

FIG. 3 is a top plan view of the embodiment.

Referring with more particularity to the drawing in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, the embodiment is illustrated in connection with a conventional paint can 11 having an inwardly projecting annular flange 12 at the top to which the conventional lid (not shown) is attached. The flange 12 conventionally contains an annular channel or groove 13 to lit a mating part of the lid.

The embodiment of the invention illustrated comprises a semi-circular collar or bar 14 having a bottom portion 15 that fits into the channel 13 and an upper lip flange 16 adapted to rest on the flange 12 adjacent the channel 13 (see FIG. 4).

To the top of the collar there is secured by welding or otherwise a sheet of metal or other suitable sheet material shaped generally like a bib to form a pouring spout 17, the inner end being curved to fit the curvature of the collar 14 flush with the inner side 18 thereof.

spectively, secured to the collar 14 by welding or other suitable means, and the

25, 26 and 27, respectively, extending downwardly over the adjacent exterior side of the can, substantially as shown. Each of these vertical arms are provided with an

aperture

28, 29 and 30, respectively, which are adapted to engage and hold the upper ends of

springs

31, 32 and 33 respectively. The lower ends of these springs converge and are connected to a single aperture 34 at the upper end of a central vertical bar 35.

The lower end of the bar 35 is bent to provide a hook 36 for releasably engaging the bottom rim edge 37 of the can.

A knob or finger grip 38 is attached to the bar 35 to facilitate engaging and disengaging the hook 36 from the edge 37 against the resilient action of the

springs

31, 32 and 33.

The device is used by simply placing the collar 14 in the channel 13 of the can and securing it in position by engaging the hook 36 with the bottom edge 37 of the can. When the can is emptied, if it is desired to replace the lid thereon, the device is quickly removable by detaching the hook 36 and lifting the collar 14 out of the channel.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

A pouring spout device for a container having an opening at the top through which the contents of the container are to be discharged and an annular flange adjacent the opening, said flange extending inwardly and having an annular vertical recessed portion therein, said device comprising a semi-circular collar adapted to be removably seated in said recessed portion, a bib attached to said collar and extending substantially horizontally outwardly therefrom to form a pouring spout for the said contents, the inner end of the bib being substantially flush with the inner edge of the collar and coextensive with its semicircular form, a plurality of vertical arms below the bib secured to the collar in spaced relation to each other longitudinally of the collar, a coil spring for each of said arms, one end of the spring being secured to the arm, a single vertical bar having its upper end secured to the other ends of said springs, the lower end of the said bar having a hook, for releasably engaging the bottom of container.
