C. S. BARON LIQUID CONTAINER AND TOP THEREFOR Filed March 13 1922 [IV VENT AJ .4r-romvsys- Patented Apr. 15, 1224.

IiJIQlJ'ID CONTAINER AND TOP THEREFOR.
Application filed March 13, 1922.' Serial No. 543,338.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that 1, CHARLES S. BARON, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Tiflin, in the county of Seneca,
in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Liquid Containers and Tops Therefor, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to liquid containers provided with tops for opening and closing them and which are exemplified in the molasses jug illustrated in the drawing.
The prime object of my invention is to produce a container of the class indicated that is provided with a novel means of securing to it a top, and preferably with a removable top whose separable connection with the container every manipulation, be-
stowed in the ordinary manner for opening the top, tends to make good, with the effect of constantly preserving a snug fit between the top and the container.
What constitutes my invention will be hereinafter specified in detail and succinctly set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing, which is illustrative of my invention in present preferred form of embodiment,
so Figure I is a side elevation of a molasses jug, by way of example, embodying my invention, the top thereof being shown in full and dotted lines, respectively, in the open and closed positions.
i5 Figure H is a similar view of another modification.
Figure 111 is a section on the line IVIV of Figure 1.
Referring to the numerals on the drawing, 1 indicates a container body that may be made from any suitable material and of any preferred shape and dimensions. I prefor to make it of glass, and to provide it with an ordinary open-mouthed spout 2, and 4.5 with the usual handle 3; but the form of mouth may be varied, if desired, and a modified handle 4 is shown in Figure II.
The body 1 is distinctive in respect to only one feature, namely, a top-carrying lug or tongue 5, that extends longitudinally upon the body in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the body, and is-preferably made integral therewith. The tongue 5 may be of any preferred shape in cross-section that is adapted to efiect cooperative union with a metallic tongue-engaging member 6. It
' may, for example, be of ordinary dove-tail the tongue 5 with the action of a spring clip.
By my present invention, the vertically disposed member 6, attached to a correspondingly disposed tongue 5, is provided at or near one end with a hinge connection that flexibly unites it to a cover 8 in such a manner as to enable the cover, under manipulation, to open and to close the mouth of the container body 1. A simple form of the hinge connection specified may consist of ears 9 projecting upwardly from the op posite sides of the member 6 into operative relationship with lugs 10 projecting downwardly from a tail piece 11 that projects rearwardly from the cover 8, and terminates 95 in the form of a thumb piece 12. A. pintle 14 may penetrate and unite the ears 9 and the lugs 10, while a spring 15 of familiar adaptation, mounted upon said pintle as by being coiled about it, may, by aid of itsoppositely extended ends, serve to actuate the cover relatively to the member 6, and so to render the cover self-closing. The said cover, being of any preferred shape that may be usual or adaptable for the function required of it, may bemade, for example, in the shape of the low substantially fiat cap illustrated that makes a flush lit with the top of the container, or it may be cupped or dome shaped, with any usual variation of fit between it and the container mouth that is incident to such a familiar form of cover. The mode of operation of my device will, it is believed, be apparent from the foregoing without further description; but it may be observed that downward pressure upon the thumb piece 12, as in opening the cover 8, tends positively to drive the member 6 down along the tongue 5, and thereby to keep tight the joint between the cover 8 and the nouth of the body 1, when the cover is close In the modification shown in Figure II the location of the hinge connection between the member 6 and the cover is changed a little, by providing the member 6 with a fixed extension 16 over the top of the container to which the cover 18 is hinged at 19.
W hat I claim is:
The combination with an open mouth container having a fixed handle, the top of which meets the wall of the container substantially below the mouth thereof, and a rigid tongue extending along the container wall between said mouth and the handle top, of a metallic clip slidably secured to cent the mouth of the container, a cover member pivotally connected to said end of the clip, and having a thumb piece extending outwardly and rearwardly from the point of pivotal connection above the clip and in substantially the same plane therewith, whereby pressure applied to said thumb piece to raise the top will press the clip downwardly along said tongue.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' CHARLES S. BARON.
lVitnesses I HARRY TAGGART,
N. E. MYERS.
