Description

July 11, 1933. Q 11 SPlLLER 1,917,670
CLOSURE FOR COLLAPSIBLE TUBES Filed July 29, 1952 Patented July 11, 1933 CLARE D. SPILLER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CLOSURE FOB COLLAPSIBLE TUBES Application filed July 29,
his invention relates to closures for collapsible tubes, and has for an object to pro idc a closure embodying new and improved features of convenience and utility.
A turther object of the invention is to proadoe a closure which embodies a hook or like supporting member forming an integral part of the organization.
A further object of the invention is to provide a closure having a sleeve which is adapted to cooperate with the screw threaded nipples of various sizes of collapsible tubes with the cap hinged to the sleeve and actuated by the hook or suspending means as a lever.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved means for holding the cap and suspending means in closed position.
The invention therefore comprises a top part for a collapsible tube either permanently formed as a art thereof, or applied thereto having an orifice for the discharge of the contents, with a cap hinged thereon properly proportioned to close over the orifice, such cap being operated by a lever which in turn acts as a suspending means.
The drawing illustrates embodiments of the invention and the views therein are as follows: 1
Figure 1 is a top plan View of the device shown in open position,
Figure 2 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of the device in open position,
Figure 8 is a view in section with the parts closed,
Figure 4 is a view in section with the cap closed and the base forming a part of the tube, and
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional View taken on line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Like characters of reference indicate cor responding parts throughout the several views.
The present invention assumes two forms, one of which provides the organization as a part of the tube itself and the other in which it is applied to the tube. The latter type comprises a sleeve 10 which has a threaded opening 11 for attachment to the threaded nipple 1932. Serial No. 625,605.
of a collapsible tube, merely indicated in dotted lines at 12 or 13. As will be noted especially from Figure 3, this threaded opening is tapered sothat it will co-act with nipples of various sizes. Collapsible tubes on the market containing various commodities are provided with nipples differing in size and the sleeve 10 being threaded as shown will cooperate with practically all of such sizes now known.
The sleeve is provided with an upstanding nozzle 14 having a passage 15 therethrough communicating with the opening in the nipple. A constricted discharge orifice 16 provides for the discharge of a limited quantity of contents.
The sleeve 10 is provided with an annular shoulder 17 and an annular rib l8. Hinged to the sleeve 10 is a cap 19. This may be hinged in any approved manner, but preferably is provided with a thickened or reinforced section 20 which engaged between cars 21 on the sleeve 10 so that it may swing from the closed position shown at Figure 3 to the open position shown at Figure 2.
For the purpose of wringing the cap 19, it is provided with an orifice 21 and a lever 22 passes through said critics and terminates in a ho0k23. The book 23 is for the purpose of suspending the device.
The end of the lever opposite the hook 23 is provided with diverging spring bail members 24 which have their ends turned as at 25 and entered in orifices 26 in the rib 18.
The rib 18 also carries abutments 27 so positionechthat when the bail is in upright position as shown at Figures 3 and 5, the bail members will engage against the abutments 27 as shown at Figure 5.
The modified type provides the base 28 directly upon the collapsible tube 29. The cap 19 is hinged to this base the same as the cap 19, and the lever 22 and hail 24 are in all respects similar. I p
The two types vary only in fact that in the one case the sleeve which forms the base is removable and in the other case is not removable.
In use, with the cap open as shown at Figures 1 and 2, the compression of the collapsible tube will force the contents through the passage 15 and out of the orifice 16. hen sufficient of the contents has exuded, the cap is closed by merely operating the lever 22. This may swing the cap to position to cover the nozzle 14 and by the snapping of the bail 24: back of the abutments 27, will be held in such closed position. The device may be operated entirely by the use of one hand and grasping the tube, the hook 23 may be pressed against any convenient object, and by a lateral movement will be either opened or closed as the pressure and condition re quires.
Of course, the closure for collapsible tubes, herein illustrated, may be modified and changed in various Ways without departing from the invention herein set forth and here inafter claimed.
The invention is hereby claimed as follows:
1. A closure for collapsible tubes comprising a base member, a nozzle upstanding from the base member, a cap hinged to the base member, and an operating lever hinged to the base member and extending through an orifice in the cap.
2. A closure for collapsible tubes comprising a base member having a nozzle upstanding therefrom, a cap hinged to the base member and proportioned to cover the nozzle, and a lever hinged to the base member and extending through a central opening in the cap and terminating in a hook.
3. A closure for collapsible tubes comprising a base member, a nozzle upstanding from the base member, a cap hinged to the base member and proportioned to cover over and close the nozzle, a lever extending through an orifice in the cap and terminating in diverging bail members, said bail members being hinged to the base member.
4. A closure for collapsible tubes comprising base member, a nozzle upstanding from the base member, a cap hinged to the base member and proportioned to cover over and close the nozzle, a lever extending through the orifice in the cap and terminating in a hook, said lever being provided at the end opposite the hook with diverging spring bail members with inturned extremities, said inturned extremities pivoting said lever to the base member.
5. A closure for collapsible tubes comprising a sleeve having an opening therethrough screw threaded in part, a cap hinged to the sleeve, and a lever pivoted to the sleeve and extending through an orifice in the cap.
6. A closure for collapsible tubes comprising a sleeve having a passage therethrough screw threaded in part, a cap hinged to the sleeve, a lever extending through an orifice provided at its outer end With a hook and with its inner end pivoted to the sleeve.
7. A closure for collapsible tubes comprising a sleeve having a passage therethrough screw threaded in part, said screw threaded part being tapered, a nozzle upstanding from the sleeve and continuing the passage, a cap hinged to the sleeve and proportioned to cover over and close the nozzle, a lever extending through an orifice in the cap and having a suspending part at one end, the opposite end being continued by diverging spring bail members having inturned ends, said inturned ends being pivotally inserted into the nozzle upon diametrically opposite sides.
8. A closure for collapsible tubes comprising a base member, a cap hinged to the base member, a lever extending through an orifice in the cap, said lever being continued by diverging spring bail members having inturned ends pivoted in the base member, and abutment-s formed upon the base member to engage with the bail members holding the cap in closed position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
