Description

DISPENSING CLOSURE FOR CONTAINERS Filed Jan. 23, 1955 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 I nventov Atomey 1935- D. H. CRCWL DISPENSING CLOSURE FOR CONTAINERS Filed Jan. 23, 1935 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Nov. 5, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to dispensing closures for containers such as collapsible tooth paste tubes and the like, and the prime object of the invention is to provide a closure which will effectively prevent the evaporation or caking of the contents of the tube and which mayyet be readily manipulated by the thumb of the hand in which the tube is grasped to permit the discharge of the contents of the tube or to close the outlet opening from the spout of the tube.
Another very important object of the invention resides in the provision of a dispensing closure of this nature which is exceedingly simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy and convenient to manipulate, thoroughly reliable in use and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings: I
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a collapsible container showing my improvedclosure therefor.
Figure 2 is a similar view taken at right angles to that shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the spring element.
Figure 4 is a similar view to that shown in Figure l but illustrating the closure in open position.
Figure 5 is a slightly enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a bottom plan view of the closure.
Figure 7 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 7-1 of Figure 5.
Referring to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the numeral 5 denotes a collapsible container such as may contain tooth paste, shaving cream and the like, and this container has the neck or spout 6 which is provided with an. upper surface disposed in a plane oblique to the axis of the opening therein. The numeral 1 denotes the body of the closure. The bottom sur-' face of which is oblique to the axis thereof to conform with the upper surface of the spout or neck 6 and the central portion of the bottom of the closure is provided with a protrusion 8 to extend slightly in the upper end of the spout or neck 6 and the surface thereof is disposed in parallelism with the surface of the body 1. An annular knurled flange 9 is formed around the upper portion of the body 7. A channeled arm lll'extends from the side of the body 1- and inclines downwardly to be disposed in approximate parallelism with the upper inverted breast or frustoconical portion 5 of the container when the 5 body is closed on the spout. A U-shaped spring element I I has one leg thereof secured to the portion 5 and the other leg secured in the channel of the arm I at the extremity thereof. It will thus be seen that the container may be grasped 10 in the hand and the thumb may engage on the arm l0 and the thumb may swing the arm to the position shown in Figure 4 thereby lifting the closure from the spout and as soon as the thumb is released the spring will reseat the closure. 15
It is thought that the construction, operation, utility,'easy manipulation and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof. 20
The present embodiment of the invention has been described in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exemplification, since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the 25 invention and the above description.
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In combination, a container having an upwardly tapering or frusto-conical breast portion terminating in a cylindrical neck or spout, said spout having the surface of its outer end oblique to the axis of the spout, a closure comprising a body having a face oblique to the axis and adapt- 40 ed toabut the surface end of the spout, an arm extending downwardly and outwardly from a side portion of the body and paralleling the breast portion when the body is in closed position, a U- shaped spring having one leg secured to the outer surface of the breast portion and the other leg to the under side of the arm for supporting the body from the breast portion and normally holding the body closed against the spout, and a projection depending from the body and fitting into the opening of the spout when the body is in closed position.
