INFANTS FORMULA CAN AND CAN-OPENER AND NIPPLE ATTACHMENT Filed July 1, 1946 I N VEN TOR:
BY Wdbzr Rqlis,
A TTOfP/VEX Patented Mar. 23, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE INFANTS FORMULA CAN AND CAN OPENER AND NIPPLE ATTACHMENT Walter Bells, Lomita, Calif.
Application July 1, 1948, Serial No. 680,819
I 1 Claim. 1 v This invention relates to sealed cans for infants formulae and a can opener and nipple attachment for such cans.
The general object of the invention is to provide sealed cans for infants formulae and a can opener and nipple attachment for such cans,
which attachment, when applied to any one of v the cans will cut a small opening therein, through which opening the contents of the can may flow into the nipple for'nursing an infant, without exposing said contents.
Other objects and advantages will appear inafter as this specification progresses.
The invention is illustrated in the annexed drawing which forms a part of this specification, and in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of the can opener and nipple attachment for the cans of my invention.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of one of the cans of my invention for containing the infants formulae.
Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of 'my can opener and nipple attachment as shown in here- Fig- 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal section of one of the cans of my invention as 7 shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary vertical, longitudinal section of one of the cans and the can opener and nipple attachment of my invention shown attached to said can. I
Fig. 6 is a plan view of my invention, showing a yvrench applied to my canopener and nipple attachment for screwing said attachment on one of my cans containing an infant's formula.
Fig. '1 is a bottom plan view of my can opener and nipple attachment.
Fig? 8 is a plan view of the mouth of one of my cans, showing the top wall of said mouth with an opening cut therein by the blade of my can opener and nipple attachment, through which opening the infant's formula may flow from the Y can into the nipple when attached to the mouth 2 and closing the top of the can. From the top head 5 a short cylindrical spout I is stamped outwardly with its outer end formed with and closed by an outer end wall 8. Th cylindrical wall of said spout I is corrugated spirally in the form of a screw thread 8.
The can opener and nipple attachment 2 comprises a cylindrical metal cap it), a can opener blade II in said cap, and a rubber nipple l2 extending outwardly and upwardly from the outer end of said cap. The cap I0 is formed with an upper end wall l3 provided with a control opening ll through which the nipple l2 extends, and the cylindrical wall of said cap is spirally corrugated in the form of a screw thread ii to fit over and screw on the thread 9 of the spout 'I of the can I. The nipple I2 is formed with an external base flange it which extends under the end wall I8 of the cap I, and the can opener blade II depends from a. metal disc I! at the edge of a central opening l8 formed in said disc, which is crimped in the upper end of the cap l0 against the lower side of the nipple flange I3 by an annular crimp is in the upper end of the cylindrical wall of the cap Iii, whereby the nipple flange is clamped in the upper end of the cap between the top wall It of said cap and said disc II.
The cap I0 is formed with a socket 20 in its side wall to receive a wrench 2!, which comprises an arcuate Jaw 22 with its outer end 23 bent inwardly and a handle 24 formed on said jaw. The wrench 2| is applied to the cap in with the end 23 of its jaw extending into the cap socket 20 and its jaw 22 engaging the periphery of said cap. By means of the handle 24 power may be applied to the cap Ill to turn it to screw the cap on the threaded spout I of a can I to cause the blade II to cut an opening in the top of the cap, or to unscrew the cap from said spout.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
Each canl is filled with an infants formula before the head 5 is placed on the top of the can,
and when so filled the head 5 is placed on the top of the can with its depending edge fiange 6 fitted over the upper edge of the body 3 of the can and sealed thereon.
. I 3 delivery of the liquid in the can i into said nipple F for withdrawal by an infant.
If the cap i6 should be hard to turn in screwin: the same on the threaded spout 1 to cause the blade ii to cut the opening 25 in the top wall 8 of said spout, the wrench 2! may be applied to the cap by inserting the Jaw end 28 of the wrench into the socket 20 in the cap it and first bringing the arcuate Jaw 22 against the periphery of said cap. and then upon grasping the wrench handle 24, applying power through said wrench to said cap and easily turning the cap I 0 with' the wrench ii.
I claim:
In combination, a can containing a liquid, which can is formed with a threaded spout closed by an end wall. a can opener and nipple attachment formed with a threaded cap, a blade and a nipple, which can is screwed on said threaded spout to cause said blade to cut an opening in said spout end wall, throughwhich opening the liquid may flow from said spout into said nipple, said cap being provided with an opening in its top wall through which opening extends the inner file of this patent:
4' I end of said nipple, which end of said nipple is formed with an external flange extending under said top wail of said cap, and a blade disc provided with an opening therein, on which disc the top wail of said cap.
