To all whom it "may concern: Be it known that I, JOHN S. NASH, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State. of- Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ca s for Syrup-Bottles and the Like, of whic clared to be a tion.
The invention relates to'syrup bottles and the like and more particularly to syrup bottles of the kind employed at soda fountains for holding the syrups of .diiferent fiavprs.
The im rovement seeks to provide as'imple and e cient form of cap and lid for such crating means therefor so arranged that t e neckof the bottle ma be grasped and at the same time and wit the same hand the lid opened. The invention also seeks to provide means for arresting the lifting movement of the lid in such position that it will fall back automatically to closed position when the syrup. bottle is .set back in place.

The bottle 10 is provided with a neck 11 that is preferably externally screwthreaded, as shown, and provided w th a flange 12 at the base of the screw-threaded portion. The improved cap com rises a sleeve 13, a part 14 having a pouring p 15, a lid 16; and operating lever 17. The sleeve 13 is referably formed of a sheet "metal tube, the ower part of which is provided with screw threads 18 to engage the screw-threaded portion of. the bottle neck 11. The cylindrical part14 is referably formed of cast metal and secured 111 place within the upper portion of the sleeve 13 above the screw threads 18, so as to form a shoulder 19. When the cap is in osition upon the neck of the bottle a flexi le rubber washer 20 is preferably arranged between the shoulder 19 and the upper edge of the mouth of the bottle. A small plate 22'is brazed or otherwise suitably secured to the outer face of the sleeve 13 near its upper edge and at a point diametrically) opposite the pouring lip 15. This late is provided with two pairsof rearward y projecting perforated cars 23 and 24 that are arranged closely adjacent each other with one jpair above the other, as shown. The cup-shaped lid 16 is provided at its edge with a perforated semi,cylindrical lug 25 which fits between the upper pair'of ears 23 and is secured thereto by the-transverse pivot pin 26. The upper end of the operating lever 17 is arranged between thelower pair of ears 24 and is connected thereto by the transverse pivot pin 27 At its upper end and beyond the pivot pin 27 the lever 17 is provided with a curved finger28 which extends inwardly around the inside of the pivot pin 26 and, in closed position, engages the in side 0 and slightly above the lid pivot 26. Fromthe-pivot 27 the lever'extend s downwardly closely adjacent the neck of the bottle so that, when the neck of the bottle is grasped, the lever may be shifted at the same time and with the same handinwardly toward the neck of the bottle to the position shown in Fig. 3, and the finger 28 shifted to lift the lid 16. This arrangement of the drooping or downwardly extending lever having means for opening the lid when pressed inwardly toward the neck of the bottle, provides a convenient construction andenables the attendant at the soda-water fountain to grasp the neck of the bottle and at the same timeby pressing upon the lever open the lid, that is to say the lid may be raised at the same time the bottleis lifted.
The lid is preferably provided at its edge above the lug 25 with a rearwardly projecting stop lug 29 that is arran ed to engage a shoulder 30 on the upper en of the lever 17 so as to limit the lifting movement of the lid. These parts areso disp'osed-that 'the lid can only open part way and cannot swing across the vertical center, the result being that, when the bottle is put back in its place, the cap is automatically closed by gravity. When the lid is lifted, as shown in Fig. 3,
25 of the lid (see Fig. 1) at a pointin g the bottle will be closed in spite the curved finger 28 of the lever'snugly engages the'semicylindrical lug 25 of the lid andthe latter is securely held in its raised position.
' Theimproved bottle cap may be readily removed when it is desired to clean the bottle. When in position, it alwaysinsures that of the carelessness of the attendant and forms a convenient construction which may 'be very easily manipulated as the bottle islifted and set backin place to open and close the mouth of the bottle. 7
It is obvious that numerous'changes may be made in the details set forth Withoutdeparture from the essentials ofthe' invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
, 1. A cap for syrup bottlesandlthe like comprising a pivoted lid, and a lever pivotally mounted adjacent the lid pivot and extending downwardly adjacent the neck of the bottle, said lever having means for lifting the lid when it is shifted inwardly, whereby the neck of the bottlemay be grasped and the lid lifted simultaneously.
2. The combination with a syrup bottle or the like, of a sleeve mounted on the neck of the bottle; a lid pivoted'at its edge to said sleeve and a lever pivoted to said sleeve adjacent the lid pivot and extending downwardly adjacent the neck of the bottle, said lever having means for lifting the lid when shifted inwardly, substantially as described.
3. A cap for syrup bottles and the like, comprising a sleeve, a lid pivoted at its edge to said sleeve, and a lever pivoted to said sleeve adjacent the lid-pivot, said lever having means for lifting the lid when shifted in.- wardly, and said lid and lever having stop portions engaging to limit the lift of said lid,

The combination with a syrup bottle or the like, of a sleeve mounted on the neck of the bottle, a lid pivoted at its edge to said sleeve and a lever pivoted to said sleeve at a I point adjacent the lid-pivot, said lever havmg a finger extending around inside of the lid-pivot vto lift thelid when the lever is shiftsaid lid having a lug and said lever having a cooperating shoulder to limit the lift of the lid, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a syrup bottle or the like, of a lid therefor pivoted at its edge, and a lever pivotally mounted at a pointedjacent the lid-pivot and extending down.-
wardly adjacent the neck of the bottle, said lever ha ng a finger extending around the lid-pivot and engaging the lid at a point in side of the same, whereby said lid is lifted when said lever is shifted inwardly toward the neck of the bottle, substantially as described.
6. A cap for syrup bottles or the like, comprising a sleeve, a lid pivoted at its edge to said sleeve, and a lever pivoted to said sleeve at a point adjacent and below said lid-pivot and extending downwardly therefrom, said lever having a curved finger extending around inside. of the lid-pivotand engaging the lid at a point inside of and slightly above its. pivot, substantially as described.
7. Aremovable cap for syrup bottles and the like, comprising a sleeve screw-threaded for detachably engaging the neck of the bot tle, a pouring lip within and at one side of the upper portion of said sleeve, a lid and a lever pivoted to said sleeve, said lever extending downwardly from its pivot and having means for lifting the lid when shifted inwardly, sub stantially as described.
8. The combination with a syrup bottle or the like, of a screw-threaded sleeve detachably engaging the neck of thebottle, a pouring lip within the upper portion of said sleeve and spaced apart from the edge thereof, a lid pivoted to said sleeve and a lever for lifting the lid, substantially as described.
9. A, removable cap for syrup bottles and the like, comprising a metal sleeve screwthreaded at its lower portion and having an inturned upper edge, a metal part secured within the upper portion of said sleeve and having a pouring lip at one side that is spaced apart from the edge of the s eeve, a lid and a lever pivoted at adjacent points to said sleeve, said lever having means for lifting said'lid, substantially as described.
10. The combination-with a syrup bottle or the like, of a metal sleeve screw-threaded to engage the neck of the bottle, a metal part secured within theupper portion of said sleeve forming a shoulder and having a pouring lip at one side, a washer interposed be tween said shoulder and the edge of the bottle-mouth, a lid hinged to said sleeve and means for lifting said lid, substantially as described.
