WILLIAM G. MAXFIELD, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF 'IO LEWIS A. HARKER, CHARLES H. AMANN, AND WILLIAM EWING, OF SAME PLACE.
OIL-CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,387, dated August 9, 1881, Application filed J line 18, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM (J. MAXFIELD, of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referonce being had to the accompanying drawings,
which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to oil-cans, particularly to lamp-filling cans, but also to transportation-cans for oil and olher fluids; and it con- 1 5 sists in mechanism for simultaneously opening and closing the escapetube and a suitable vent-opening, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of an oil-can to which myiuvention has been applied, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 2000.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
A in the drawings represents an ordinary tin can, provided with a nozzle, B, through which the can may be filled,said nozzle being closed by a threaded cap, 0. The said can A is also provided with a spout, D, through 0 which its contents may be poured out, and
with a suitablehandle, E.
The top F of the can is provided upon its under side with down ward-projectin g brackets G H, at the lower ends of which are pivoted 5 levers I J. The inner or adjoining ends of said levers are connected by a pin, K, secured in one of the lovers, and working in a slot, L, in the other.
Under the top F of the can is secured a coiled spring, M, forcing in a downward direction the inner end of the lever I, thus forcing the outer ends of both levers upward toward the top of the can.
The lever I is provided at its outer end with 4 5 a plug or cushion, N, to close the lower end of the spout D.
The lever J has at its outer end a pivoted rod, 0, extending upward through the tube P, near the top edge of the can, and provided with a thumb-piece, Q. Lever J is also provided with a plug or cushion, B, to close the lower end of tube P, which, during operation, serves as a vent to the can.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
The spout and vent-tube are both kept antomatically closed, thus preventing the contents of the can from being accidentally spilled in case the can should be upset. It also prevents the evaporation of the oil or other liquid. By removing the pressure from the thumbpiece after oil has bi-en poured out and before the can is righted, all liability to an explo- 6 sion of gas within the can is prevented by closing the escape-spout and preventing suction. On the otherhaud, by depressing the thumbpiece Q the spout and vent are opened. thus enabl ng the contents of the can to be couveu- 7o iently poured out.
Having thus described my invention, [claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. A can having a spout and venttube, in 7 combination with the herein-described mechanism for automatically closing and simultaneously opening the same, consisting, substantially, ofthe brackets GH, to which are pivoted the levers I J, having plugs or cushions N It, spring M, and suitable operating mechanism, substantially as described. I
2. The herein-described improved oilcan, having spout I), vent-tube P, and brackets G H, in combination with the levers I J, having 8 plugs or cushions N R, spring M, and rod 0, having thumb-piece Q, all arranged and operatiug as herein described, for the purpose shown and specified.
