SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 241,737, dated May 17, 1881.
Application filed March 3, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES SKERRY, of Jackson, in the county of Madison, and in the State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in oil-cans; and it has for its object to provide a receptacle for coal and other oils, from which such oil can be conveniently withdrawn or emptied into a lamp or other vessel, and which can be readily opened or closed to discharge the oil and vent the can without removing the stopper, and in which the handle is so constructed'that the can may be carried in a vertical position without inconvenience, and can be manipulated with ease to discharge the oil. These objects I attain by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1. represents a vertical sectional view of my improved can Fig. 2, a top View thereof with the stopper removed; Fig. 3, an enlarged sectional view of the upper part of the can, showing the stopper in elevation; Fig. 4, a detached view of the stopper; and Fig. 5 represents a horizontal section on the line as a; of Fig. 1.
The letter A indicates the body of the can, and B the breast thereof. The body is constructed of cylindrical form, and the rear part of the breast is inclined acutely forward to the top, the front being slightly inclined, as indicated in Fig. l of the drawings. The breast is gradually contractedtoward the top, where it is provided with a frustum-shaped neck, 0, from which extends a discharge-spout, D, and a vent-tube, E, the latter passing to the rear of the breast and opening into the can at F.
The stopper G is provided with recesses H I on opposite sides, one near the top and the other near the bottom of said stopper. The stopper is also provided with a projection, K, to limit its movement.
The letter L indicates the handle of the can. This extends upward in nearly a vertical position from the lower rear edge of the breast, and then forward horizontally to the neck 0,' to which it is attached, the vertical portion serving as a means for manipulating the can to discharge the contents, while the horizontal portion serves as a means by which the can may be carried in a vertical position.
' The operation of my invention is as follows: The stopper, as indicated in Fig. 3, is in a normal position closing the can. When it is desired to discharge the oil the stopper is turned so as to bring the recesses H and I reto the rear of the breast, and the stopper having recesses, all arranged to operate substantially as specified.
