Description
UNITEDA STATES PirrElv'r GEEIGE.
HENRY C. BULL, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, ASSIGNOR TO JOSEPH M. LOEWENSTEIN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN 4EARTH-CLOSETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,103, dated December 26, 1871.
I, HENRY C. BULL, of New Orleans, in the State of Louisiana, have invented certain Improvements in Disinfecting and Deodorizing Closets, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a front view of the combined lid and tank, when thrown back, showing in a vertical position the arrangement of the valve and guidein combination therewith. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the combined lid and tank when closing the aperture of the closet. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of my device. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the slide-valve. Fig. 5 is a plan view, showing the top of my device.
My invention relates to an improvement in disinfecting` and deodorizing closets, whereby the feces is economized and employed for fertilizing purposes. It consists of the closet A, the barreltank B, the combined lid and tank C, and the slide-valve D, arranged and constructed substantially in the manner as shown and described.
Av is a closet which may beco'nstructed in quadrilateral or other suitable form, and of any well known material, the rear of which may be kept open or closed, as may seem best in practice.
a is a step for reaching the seat .of the device,
and a a are handles for adjusting the same. B is albarrel-tank provided with the metallic top b having iian ge e thereon, upon which screws the lid j'. Said tank may be made of metal lined with suitable material, as wood, or it may be made exclusively of either oi said materials. It is pro vided with the handles d d., the better to facilitate the removal thereof. C is a combined lid and tank, and is preferably constructed ot' a semispherical shape, and is provided with the projecting arm P, which is hinged to the top ot' the closet. The bottom of the eombin ed lid and tank is 'iiat and `tits closely the seat J, and into the mouth or top of the combined lid and tank screws the cap W. G is an aperture in the bottom of the combined lid and tank opening into the valve D, and K is a guide which is rigidly attached to the base of the combined lid and tank. Said guide has an aperture therein, F, located, when the lid is closed, in a vertical line with and over the center of the aperture of the closet-seat, from which aperture Fis precipitated, by the action of the valveD at the moment of closing the lid and by said movement of thev combined lid and tank, a disinfecting and deodorizing compound upon the feces in the barrel-tank B. Dis a slide-valve located and working in the guide K, which latter is rigidly attached to the base of the semi-spherical tank and lid O, and when the aperture in thecloset-seat is closed it projects therein. H H are suitably-shaped hooks through which the bar or wire M is passed, the said bar being rigidly attached to the under side of the top of the closet, thus forming a hinge capable of describing the required circle upon the elevation, and lowering of the lid of the closet C. Slide-valve D is shaped laterally like an inverted letter U, but is also provided with the aperture N, which, when the combined lid and tank C is elevated into a vertical position, is in a line with the oriiice G of the tank; and with this object the hinge or pivotal point ofthe valve D has its bearings a slight distance from the hinge or pivotal point of the combined lid and tank O. Hence when tank and lid C is lifted or thrown back into a vertical position, through the aperture G in tank G a disinfecting and deodorizing compound containedin said tank immediately Hows through the said Vaperture into the trough of the valve,
and when the lid is lowered to cover the aperture in the seat of the closet, it is carried thereby, along by the slide-valve D, and emptied at aperture N into the feces contained in the barreltank B. r
I claiml. The combined lid and tank of closet Ahaving guide K, and the valve D, constructed and arranged to operate as described, in combination with the tank B, substantially as shown and set forth.
'2. The construction and arrangement of the combined lidand tank O, guide K, sliding valve D rel-tank B, all as shown and described.
In testimony of this my application for Letters Patent for a disinfecting and deodorizing closet,
I hereunto subscribe my name the day and year first above written.
