14 Claims. (01. 233-483) g This invention is a closure for containers, particularly for liquid containers.
The closure of the present invention is particularly adapted for liquids, such, for example, as oil or gasoline, although capable of general application. The container has a relatively large opening for filling and emptying purposes which is closed by a cover which is not hinged directly to thecontainer, but is hinged to a hinge-plate or link plate, which in turn is hinged to the-container. Pivoted to the cover is a clamping member which has hooks which engage with studs on the container for holding the cover closed. The pressure of the clamping member is exerted on the cover through a resilient connection, a lost motion connection being provided to make up for wear of the parts, such, for example, as the wearing out of the usual gasket between the cover and the container. This resilient connection is preferably in the form of a spring at the center 7 press the cover to closed position.
The cover is preferably provided with a dispensing spout in the form of a small pipe mount-f amounts of liquid may ed therein, whereby small be dispensed if desired. The dispensing spout is provided with'a threaded cap which may conveniently be carried by the hinge or link plate mentioned above, and this threaded cap is arranged to engage with the clamping member when the'latter is in closed position, for holding the clamping member in such position. This thread-- ed 'clamping means could take the form ar threaded stud instead of a threaded spout, but the threaded spout is preferred because of the dispensing ability thereof.
The principal features and objects of the incover, the lost motion connection taking up wear 4. To provide a closure having a dispensing spout therein. V 'I o provide a closure having a'dispensing spout therein and having a clamp pivoted thereto,
app s pressure against the The clamping member.
the cap for the dispensing spoutserving also to lock the clamping member in closed position.
6. To provide a cover which has 'a clamping memberihavinghooks For the like for engaging with suitable studs'on the'containerfor exerting.
a resilient pressure on"the.cover, the cover 'also having a dispensing spout which is closed by a closure cap which serves tolock the..clamping member in closed position. 7
Further advantages of'structure and operation will be described in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating the present pro-- ferred embodiment of the invention, in which:
1 Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a container showing my improved closure Fig. 2 is a side view on an enlarged scale of the closure;
I Fig. 3 is a section on theline 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig.1 is-a section on the line 44 of Fig. 2. Referring now'to the drawing, 2 shows a metal container provided with a carrying handle 4. The container is provided with a neck 6. Seated on the upperedge of the neck 6 is a cover 8 provided, with a peripheral flange I 0 for holding a gasket I2.
,m diametrically opposite positions on the cover 8 are bearings [4, through which bearings passes the long pivot pin or hinge pin it in suitable aperturesv l8. Apertures l 8 are enlarged, to provide a. lost motion. connection, for a purposeto be explained. I
Pivotedon the long pin I6 is a hinge or link plate 20, the link plate 20 being bent around the pin to provide a bearing therefor, as at 2|. Plate 2,0 isin turn pivoted or hinged tothe neck 6 bymean-s of downwardlybent' ears 22, through which earsi is passeda hinge pin 24, this pin beingparriedin a suitable. bearing 26 in the bracket 28 securedto the neck B.
for the cover '8 will now be described. This clamping member; indicated generally at 30,15 of arcuate,, Ufshaped construction, and is provide'cllatj each end with apair of downwardly bent ears 32fwhich straddle the bear- 3 mas e h c ve he hingepin [6, already described,'passesthrough these ears and provides a pivot for theclamD 130. Thaclamping memberis also provided with hook'members 34 which engage under suitable studs 36 on the neck wardly and holdingit in clamping position. An important featureof the invention is thatthe 'clamp,30.exerts.aresilient pressure on the p co verfi thisis effected by thepin l6 pressing .pivoted to the cap 44 is removed and downwardly in bearing 2 l, as the hooks 34 draw the clamping member downwardly. This downward pressure presses the bearing 2| down- .wardly against the inverted cup 38 in which is 40, the other end of the spring seated a spring being in a cup 42 positioned at the central part of the cover 8. Even though the gasket l2 should get thinner and thinner, as it would do, in use,.
threaded and provided with a threaded closure which cap is provided with a groove 46 to form a swivel'connection for the wire member 50 which passes around the cap and then passes through the collar 52, the wire here being doubled. The doubled wire is hinge plate 20 as by providing the hinge plate with up-struck perforated'lugs or arches 54, through which is passed a hinge or cotter-pin 56;, the wire- 50 being formed into an eye '58 encircling the pin 56.
In operation, and as shown in Fig. 3, the closure is entirely closed, the outer part of the flange 480i the cap 44 engaging over the inner edge of the clamping member3fl, thereby lockingithe clamping member in clamping position. In order to dispensea small amount of liquid, the cap 44 is removed from the spout 42 and the liquid poured out through the spout. To facilitate the entrance of air into the can for such dispensing, a conventional air inlet device '60 provided with a threaded cap, is used.
In order to remove the cover 8 entirely, the the fingers inserted under the flange 62 of the clamping member; the clamping member is swung clockwise about 90, thereby releasing the hooks 34 from the studs 35; further lifting'of member 30 serves to removethe cover 8 entirely. In order. to close the container, the parts are swung counterclockwise until the clamping member is in the position of Fig. 1, after'which the closure cap 44 is fscr'ewe'd down, thereby-lockingfthe clamping member in clamping position. I
While the invention some detail, it should be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the precise decap 44, and lower flange 48,
tails herein described, bu may be carried out in otherways.
