SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,794, dated November 24, 1896.

Application filed April 28, 1896. serial No. 589,383. No model.

Be it known that l, Gnoncn J. Rnconn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Conneaut, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Removing the Covers of Cans or other Receptacles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention. relates to devices for removing the tightly-sealing covers of receptacles and packages, and incidentally in some forms for assisting in holding on the cover when it is not to be removed. The said invention is an improvement on my Letters Patent No. 554:,703, dated February 18, 1896. In the said Letters Patent I described and showed a fixed fulcrum for the coverdifting lever. In the present instance I employ instead of it a pivoted fulcrum, which may be folded down on the side of the can or turned up for use, the said fulcrum also being sometimes bent so as to fit over the top of the can and assist in holding on the cover, instead of merely folding or falling down, as first mentioned. I also construct the lifting-lever with a bend or elbow which fits on the said fulcrum when the latter is in position for use and retains it in such position.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a can with the lever and fulcrum embodying my invention folded in normal position, the fulcrum being of the downturning kind. Fig. 2 represents a similar view with these parts in full lines in position to begin lifting, theirposition when the cover is slightly raised being shown in dotted lines and only the proximate corner of the can being shown. Fig. 3 represents a view similar to Fig. l of the construction which has the fulcrum folded over the cover, only the proximate part of the can and cover being shown. Fig. represents a view similar to Fig. 2, but of the construction shown in Fig. 13; and Fig. 5 represents a modified form of the fulcrum which folds over the cover this being intended for use with larger packages.

A designates the body of the can or other package or receptacle, which may be cylindrieal or tapering or of anyother convenient form and may be of any suitable material or size.

13 designates the cover, which, as shown, is the one described and shown in the said Letters Patent, though any tightly-fitting cover may with ad vantage be supplied with the said lever and folding fulcrum.

0, Figs. 1 and 2, designates a fulcrum having the shape of an ordinary buckle without its tongue and pivoted or hinged to the side of the said can at 0 near its top, so that it maybe turned up for use into position slightly above the cover and inclining outward a littie to avoid the edge of the same, though when left unsupported it will fall into the folded position shown in Fig. 1.

The liftingdever D, preferably in the form of a long flattened loop, is pivoted at D to the said cover near its edge and constructed with a bend or elbow D which is arranged to fit on the said fulcrum when in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2 and hold the said fulcrum in place. hen the said lever is depressed, the lifting force is applied to the bestad vantage and with very little friction, partly on account of the rounded contact of the bend in the lever with the rounded upper bar of the buckle-shaped fulcrum, and the parts gradually take the position shown in dotted lines.

Sometimes instead of allowing the fulcrum to drop downward in folding I extend it to rest on the cover of the can, package, or receptacle, giving ita bend O to fit over the corner of the can, as shown in Fig. at. The fulcrum thus constructed is designated C When in the above position, it aids in holding the cover in place. \Vhen to be used for lifting the cover, it is turned out into the position shown in Fig. 3, and the leveris turned down, so that its bend or elbow D will fit upon it, holding the said fulcrum in place. The operation is then as before.

lVhen used for larger packages, the fulcrum (marked C Fig. 5) is preferably a solid bar of T form, the cross part being hinged to the can and normally vertical, while the tongue extends horizontally over the said cover and holds it in place.

I do not wish to be understood as claiming in this application the device which I patented February 2-5, 1896, No. 555,334, the same consisting of a bucket having the usual liftingbail, in one part of which a fulcrum is formed for the lever attached to the cover. The fulcrum in said patent is not directly attached to the bucket and not independent of the bail. It cannot be used except when the entire bail is raised; also, it is inapplicable to receptacles not having a bail.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In combination with a receptacle having a removable cover, a lever arranged to remove the said cover, and a fulcrum which is pivoted to the body of the said receptacle independently of the bail and any other part and which is arranged to fold against the said receptacle when the latter is carried or at rest and when the said fulcrum is not immediately needed for opening the can substan tially as set forth.

2. In combination with a receptacle or package, a lever arranged to lift the cover thereof and a pivoted fulcrum for said lei'er, the latter being shaped to fold on the cover of the said can and aid in holding it in place substantially as set forth.

3. In combination with a receptacle and its removable cover, a lever arranged to lift the said cover, and a fulcrum turning up for use or down to be folded away, the pivotal motion of the said fulcrum being in the same plane as that of the said lever and presenting' the top of the said fulcrum thereto substantially as set forth.

i. A fulcrum having the ordinary form or the body or frame of a buckle pivoted to the body of a receptacle or package, in combination with a loop-form lever pivoted to the cover thereof, said lever being" constructed with a bend or elbow to fit over the said fulcrum and hold it in operative position suostantially as set forth.

5. A lever pivoted to the cover of areceptacle or package and havingabend D formed therein, in combination with a fulcrum givoted to the body of said receptacle or pack age and arranged to fit into the said bend or elbow, the said fulcrum being bent and extended to fit over the said cover substantially 3 as set forth.

6. A receptacle provided with a cover a lifting-lever and a fulcrum for said lever, Lhc latter being adapted to aid in holding the cover on said receptacle when not in position to aid the said lever in lifting.
