Be it known that I, JAMES ALONZO LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Broom Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved attachment for brooms having for its object to carry a dust-pan and a dust receptacle which will thus be always conveniently available whenever the broom is to be used.

A further object of the invention is to simplify and improve the construction and-operation of this class of devices, and to provide a broom attachment of the character described which may be supplied at a trifling cost, and which may be readily and quickly attached to or applied to brooms of ordinary construction, in position for operation.

With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to when desired.

The drawing represents in Figure 1 a perspective view showing the improved attachment, as seen from the rear, applied to an ordinary broom in position for operation; the broom being indicated in dotted lines so as not to obstruct the view of the invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.

The improved attachment includes a main frame A and an auxiliary or supporting frame B, both of which are preferably formed of wire which may be of any suitable or desired gage or thickness a good quality of.

resilient wire such as brass wire is preferable but not necessarily employed, as the device may be advantageously manufactured at a very trifling expense of ordinary galvanized wire.

In the construction of the main frame A, the top bar l of said frame is formed with a downward extending inverted arch or V- shaped portion 2 intermediate its ends at the ends of the top bar are formed rearward extending U-shaped loops 3 3 whereby the top bar is offset forwardly from the side members of the frame, which latter include hori- Zontal portions 4 4 that extend laterally from the rear portions of the loops 3 3, and vertical portions 5 5 which extend downward from the inner ends of the horizontal portions 4 4. `Connected to the vertical portions 5 5 are upper and lower parallel brace bars,6 6.

The supporting frame B is formed with members 7 7 which converge toward their outer ends and are provided with vertical portions 3 which connect the members 7 7. To the vertical portions 8 straps 9 9 are connected, one of which straps is provided with a buckle 10. The bars 6 6 are Wound around the vertical portions 5 5, as shown at 16, and solder may be employed when desired to make the attachment more secure.

A dust receptacle used in connection with the device consists of a small oblong box 11, suitably constructed of sheet metal and preferably provided with a hinged lid or cover 12 said box is provided with hooks or hangers 13 whereby it is supported upon the supporting frame B near the points Where the latter is intersected by the side members of the frame A. A small dust-pan 14 having a suitable handle 15 is likewise used in connection with the invention, said dust-pan being adapted to be supported between the U-shaped loops 3 3 of the frame A, the pan being inserted between the ends ofthe top bar 1 and the laterally extended portions 4 of the side members of the frame; the down- Ward projecting or inverted arch portion of the top bar 1 serving to support the pan, the lower edge of which will also rest upon the lid of the dust-box or receptacle.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood. The improved device may be very readily attached to an ordinary broom, the head of which is encircled by the supporting frame B and the straps 9 9 attached to the latter, said straps being connected by the buckle 10 when the device has been thus applied to the broom it serves to support the dust-pan and the dust receptacle, both of which will thus always be available for instant use; the dust box or receptacle being emptied at intervals.
