CHARLES N. CHOATE, OF GREENVILLE, MICHIGAN", ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ELONZO J. GORDON, OF SAME PLACE.
SEED-BAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,412, dated February 11, 1896.
Application fil d October 24,1895. Serial No. 566,747. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES N. CHOATE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of Montcalm and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seed-Bags, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention consists in the construction of a bag having a frame for holding the bag open and for holding it from swinging about the user, and a harness for supporting it in position.
The invention in detail consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts, all as more f ullyhereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the frame; and Fig. 3 is a section through the inner edge of the frame, as at X X, Fig. 1.
At the present time it is usual for farmers in planting potatoes and other. seed to hang a pail or a bag at the side to carry such seed. Such devices are unsatisfactory, the bag, because it collapses at the top and swings, and the pail because it swings about and is unwieldy and cumbersome. My device overcomes these objections and produces a light, strong and satisfactory receptacle for such seed, easily supported, which will not chafe the person nor interfere with locomotion, and which is convenient at all times to reach the seed within the bag.
A is the bag, at the top of which is secured a light strong open frame 13, preferably of band metal or heavy sheet metal strips. This, at its inner side, has the hip curve or side curve C-that is, has a curve which will conform substantially to the side or hip of the user. This frame serves to keep the mouth of the bag open. On the curved or hip portion thereof I secure or form a depending flange or bearing-plate E, which bears against the side of the user and prevents the outer edge of the frame from bending down, to
wholly or partially close the mouth of the tending from the rear end of the extension F to the eye-plate II at the front thereof.
The construction gives me the results and advantages hereinbefore set forth.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination with a bag, of an open frame secured to the mouth thereof having its inner edge curved to embrace the hip of the user, and having a back-bearing extension, and a supporting means for the bag.
2. The combination with a bag of an open frame secured to the mouth thereof, its inner edge having a curve to conform to the hip of the user, a correspondingly-curved bearingplate depending on the curved side and a harness for supporting the bag.
3. The combination with a bag of an open metallic frame secured to the mouth thereof to distend the same, having a hip curve on its inner edge, a correspondingly-curved bearing-plate depending on the curved side, a back-bearing extension of said plate adapted to extend partly across the back of the user, and a harness for supporting the bag, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES N. OHOATE. WVitnesses:
En. J. BOWMAN, CHARLES MILLER.
