Be it known that I, THOMAS MANAHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of NewYork, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bags, of which the following is a specification.

ing andprotecting clothing and other articles from moths or other vermln, and consists in certain novel features of constructing the same and their fastenings, as hereinafter shown and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the upper part of a bag. The object of this invention is to effect improvements in bags for holding clothing or other articles and in fastenings for closing the mouth of the bag.

In carrying out my invention I employa bag comprising front and rear flaps A and B, the latter being extended beyond the top edge of the front flap A to form a mouth-closing flap or extension B which can be turned over the top portion of the front flap to close the bag mouth, and thus exclude insects, vermin, dust, and the like. The top portion of the front flap A is bent over upon itself in such a manner as to embrace the flexible sweller or key 0 which is fastened underneath the said flap and close along the front mouth edge of the bag, by glue or other suitable adhesive material or fastening. The said flap A is reinforced after it is bent over upon the sweller by reinforcing pieces D two of which are placed at the ends of the flap and are carried around to the back part of the bag, and the third is placed at the middle of the width of the bag where it serves to reinforce and supportthe sweller. This construction combines the front flap and the sweller so that they are permanently secured to each other, and they will together yield to any reason able force used This invention relates to bags for contain-,

The sweller is made of any suitable material which possesses the desired flexibility, such for example, as hard twisted cord, and the thickness of the same will be such as is suitable for the size of the bag. The flexible sweller enables me -to have ready access to the contents of the bag, and to open it with facility while it is suspended by its ring E.

The letter F designates a slotted-tube which is preferably made of some light material like wood, but may be of any suitable material. Its slot extends from end to end of the tube, and is of such a size as to allow it to be shoved endwise upon the sweller when the mouthclosing flap or extension B of the rear flap B has been turned over upon the sweller and the front flap as is shown in Fig. 5. To enable the slotted tube to pass readily over the sweller, I bevel its ends in an inward direction so as to make the same flaring as is indicated by the tapering inner line G, Fig. 5.

y In the drawings, Figure 1, the mouth-closing flap or extension B is thrown up, and the same figure shows in dotted lines the supplemental back H which is preferably of metal and which is secured to the back of the bag by rivets I I. The back plate H isprovided with the ring E for suspending the bag. The interior of the bag is provided with several hooks K which are rivetedto the metal back plate H and which serve for hanging up garments in the bag, and also for riveting the back of the bag to the supplementary plate II.

It is obvious that in filling or emptying my bag, it can be suspended on the ring E and one person can readily operate it without being compelled to support the weight of the bag meanwhile.

In making the slotted tube, I saw the slot out, and thus produce a rough surface therein, which will have a tendency to prevent the tube from slipping off the sweller accidentally.

IVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

I 1. The combination with a bag composed of the front flap A and the rear flap B extended above the top of the front flap to form the mouth-closing flap or extension B of a flexible sweller C over which the topedge of the front flap is secured, and a slotted tube F which receives the sweller, the front flap, and

the mouth-closin g flap or extension when the latter is turned over to close the bag mouth, substantially as described.

2. The combination with a bag composed of the front flap A and the rear flap B extended above the top of the front flap to form the mouth-closing flap or extension B of a flexible sweller C over which the top edge of the front flap is secured, and a slotted tube F, which receives the sweller, the front fiap,and the mouth-closing flap or extension when the latter is turned over to close the bag month, said slotted tube having a beveled or flared portion at each extremity, substantially as and for the purposes described.

3. The combination with a bag comprising the front flap A, and the rear flap 13 extended above the top edge of the front flap to form THOMAS MANAHAN.
