PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. 'BEISEL, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO RICHARD F. BIGGER, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
PACKAGING-CLIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 749,834, dated January 19, 1904. Application filed July 27, 1903. Serial No. 167,095. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. BEIsEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packaging-Clips, of which i the following is a specification.
Large quantities of many kinds of merch andisc are packed in pasteboard boxes and difficulty is experienced in preparing such boxes for shipment, especially where several boxes are to be shipped in a single package, for the reason that the holding-cord if tied tight enough to hold the boxes together is apt to cut into and break down the corners of the boxes.
The object of my invention is to produce a clip which can be manufactured at a very low cost and which can be applied readily to those points of the edges of boxes where the holding-cord is to pass, the construction being such that the clips cannot become displaced and will prevent all possibility of breaking the boxes by the cord.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an approved form of my clip; Fig. 2, a similar view of the opposite side from that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view with a cord in position, and Figs. L and 5 are perspective views of the manner of use.
he clip consists of a metallic strip 10,which is bent at its middle to form a pair of divergent arms substantially at right angles to each other, and at the point of bend I punch up from. the material of the clip a pair of cars 11 11, between which a holding-cord 12 may be passed.
In order that the clip may be made of light material and yet be of suflicient rigidity, I form a pair of corrugations or ribs 13 13 along the edges of the clip. I also displace portions of the body of the clip inward to form prongs 14, which are capable of engaging the boxes to prevent lateral displacement.
In operation a plurality of boxes 15 of any shape may be piled one upon the other and the clips 10 placed as shown. The wrappingcord 12 may then be drawn tightly around the package thus formed, a clip 10 lying beneath the cord at each point where it is drawn over the corner of a box. In order that the cord may not become displaced, I find it advisable to pinch the ears 11 together over the cord, as shown in Fig. 3.
I claim as my invention- 1. A packaging-clip consisting of a strip of metal bent to form a pair of comparatively short divergent arms and having a portion cut from its middle at the line of divergence of the arms, and cord-retaining means carried by the clip.
2. A packaging-clip consisting of the strip 10 bent to form a pair of divergent arms, and earsll, 11, formed from material cut from the clip at the line of divergence.
3. A packaging-clip consisting of the strip 10 bent to form a pair of divergent arms, ears 11, 11, formed from material cut from the clip at the line of divergence, and prongs 14 projecting from the inner faces of the divergent arms.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 22d day of July, A. D. 1903.
CHARLES E. BEISEL. [L. s.]
