M. LOEWENT HAL.
BOX STAY.
Patented July 1, 1890.
INVENTOR Jaw BY H/fATTUHNEYf UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARCUS LOEVVENTHAL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOX-STAY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,068, dated July 1, 1890.
Application filed March 3, 1890- Serial No. 342,465. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARCUS LOEWENTHAL, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stays for Packages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in a metal strip adapted to removably engage the edges of a box or package and having one of its angles provided with notches.
The object of the invention is to provide a means to protect the edges and corners of paper boxes or packages from indentation or breakage by a cord employed in securing the package or by handling in transportation, or from other means of breakage.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a top surface of a stay-strip embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is an end View thereof. Fig. 3 shows the stay as applied to a rectangular box or package. Fig. 4L shows the strip as applied to a round box or package. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a box with the stay thereon.
Similar letters of reference designate eorre to the point of angle a. I have shown the cut-away portions as V-shaped; but they may be rectangular without departing from the spirit of my invention, and the number of cutaway portions within a given space is immaterial. The portion A is not provided with notches. It is designed to embrace the lateral edges of a box, allowing the portion A to lap over the top or bottom edge of a box, the notches in the portion A allowing the portion A to lie closely against the lateral edge of a round box, as shown in Fig. 4, or to turn the corners of a rectangular box, as shown in Fig. 3. This strip may be used in sect-ions, or a continuous strip may be employed to surround the edge of a box.
MARCUS LOEVENT'HAL.
