York, have invented a new and Improved Box-Opener, of which the-following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to box-openers and it consists, substantially, in the details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more particularly described, and

The invention has reference more especially to openers for pasteboard or paper boxessuch, for instance, as are employed for containing ice-cream and the like in bricks or blocks'although applicable to other forms of boxes and one of the principal objects of the invention is to rovide a device of this kind which is simple 1n its construction and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, besides being thoroughly effective and reliable for its purpose.

A further object is to overcome numerous disadvantages and objections frequently encountered in the use of many other contrivances hitherto devised with like ends in view.

The above and additional objects are attained by means substantially such as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which like reference characters indicate like parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a paper or pasteboard box havlng my improvements embodied in connection therewith, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional plan view showing certain features of the improvements.

Before proceeding with a more detailed description it may be stated that my improvements are especially adapted to pasteboard and paper boxes of rectangular structure, and in the form of my improvements herein shown I employ specially-constructed opening devices for the box which normally may be also utilized as bails or handles for carrying the box when filled, said devices being so organized with reference to opposite sides of the box as to enable said sides to be torn or severed from the remaining sides of the box in such manner as to enable the contents of the box to be removed in intact stituting the four corners of the box.

form. While I have herein represented my improvements in a certain preferred embodiment, it will be understood, of course, that I am not limited thereto in precise de tail, since immaterial changes therein may be resorted to coming within the scope of my invention.

Reference being had to the drawings by the designating characters marked thereon, 1 represents an ordinary paper or pasteboard -boxsuch, for instance, as is frequently employed for containing ice-cream or other substances in bulk and which is provided with four sides 1, 2, 3, and 4, uniting with each other angularly, as indicated at 5, thus con- Said box. may be provided with any suitable form of lid or closure, (indicated at 6,) and in order to enable opposite sides of the box to be severed or disconnected from the remaining sides thereof, by which the contents of the box may be removed intact or unbroken in any part thereof, I provide at the corners formed by the four sides of the box suitable devices by which the said opposite sides of the box may be torn away from the remaining parts of the structure. These devices are preferably in duplicate, and each consists of a wire or cord 7, extending within one of the corners of the box, as indicated at 8, thence passing through the bottom of the box at 9 and extending across the bottom for its full width at 10, thence passing upwardly through the bottom at 11, and extending upwardly within the opposite corner of the box at 12 and outwardly at 13, the upwardly-projecting portion 14 of the wire forming a bail or handle by which the box and its contents may be conveniently carried in the hand. The material of the Wire of each of the devices may be such as not to have any contaminating efiect u on the contents of the box; but to abso utely guard against any contamination thereof I provide (preferably located in the corners of the box) suitable paper or other strips 15, by which the portions of the wire running interiorly of the box are completely covered and prevented from direct contact with the ice-cream or then by pulling outwardly upon said bail the side of the box with which this particular device cooperates will be torn away from the sides intersecting therewith, substantially as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. Then the bail 14 of the device located at the opposite side of the box is similarly operated to tear asunder the opposite side, whereupon after the opposite sides of the box have been torn away for their full height the remaining opposite sides of the box may then be turned downwardly flatwise upon the table or other support upon which the operations may be carried out, so that in this way the brick or block of ice-cream contained in the box may be removed in its complete or intact form. The ends of the wire of each of the devices described may be united in any suitable way, as by twisting at 16, and it will be seen that the portion of each device extending across the bottom of the box furnishes a substantial leverage for the device in the operation thereof just described.

From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and operation of my improvements will be fully understood and also that the many advantages thereof will be apparent without further detailed description.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A rectangular box provided in each pair of opposite corners thereof with a wire extendin along the corners of each pair, thence throug and across the under side of the bottom of the box, the extremities of each of said wires being united above the top of the box to form a bail for the box.

2. A rectangular box provided in each pair of opposite corners thereof with a wire extending along the corners of each pair, thence through and across the under side of the bottom of the box, the extremities of each of said Wires being united above the top of the box to form a bail for the box, and each corner of the box being provided interiorly with a shield for the corresponding inner portion of the Wire, to prevent contamination of the contents of the box.
