JOHN SINGLE, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
PAPERVESSEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Iletters Patent No. 717,77 5, dated January 6, 1903.
Application filed May 25, 1901.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN SINGLE, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Paper Vessel, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object the pr0duo tion of a paper vessel which is folded from a blank and is more perfectly water-tight than those heretofore devised; and it consists in the combination, construction, and arrangement of the component parts of a paper vessel, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in-which like letters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of a paper vessel embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an isometric view, partly broken away, of a portion of said vessel. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank for forming my paper vessel. Fig. t is a sectional view taken on line 4 4, Fig. 3.
My paper vessel is composed of a blank A, formed with a substantially rectangular bot tom portion 0., side portions ct, extending outwardly from the sides of the bottom portion, and connecting portions a 01. which are formed substantially V- shaped, are interposed between the side portions a and are folded on lengthwise lines or creases a for forming connecting folds between the side portions of of the blank. Said connecting portions a are provided with cut-outs a extending inwardly from their outer edges, and, as clearly seen in Fig. 3, the parts of said connecting portions between the inner portions of said cut-outs and the bottom portion a are of less length than the side portions a. Consequently when the blank A is folded to make my paper vessel opposite side walls thereof consist of inner, intermediate, and outer parts, respectively, composed of the portions a a 0. previously described. As clearly seen in Fig. 3, the inner parts of said opposite side walls, composed of the portions a, are of substantially the same width and height as said side walls. The intermediate parts, composed of the portions 03, are united to upright edges of the inner parts, are lapped upon Serial No. 61,880. (1N0 model.)
the outer faces of the inner parts, and their upper portions are cut away, their upper edges a being inclined downwardly from said upright edges, and the outer parts, composed of the portions of, are united to the other upright edges of the intermediate parts and are lapped upon the outer faces of the intermediate parts and upon the portions of the outer faces of the inner parts above the intermediate parts. It will be particularly noted that the upper edge of each intermediate part a intersects with the upright edge of the adjacent outer part a a substantial distance below the upper edge of the latter to expose an approximately large area of the part 0. above the upper edge of the part 01?, thus presenting a large surface of the former for direct attachment to the outer face of the inner part. The contiguous surfaces of the inner, intermediate, and outer parts of said opposite side walls of my paper vessel are united by paste or glue, thus rendering the vessel stable and preventing escape or slopping of liquid between contiguous surfaces of the side walls thereof. 7
The upper parts of opposite side portions or of the blank A are formed with flaps a'flwhich together with flaps on the corresponding parts of the connecting portions a form the top of the paper vessel. I One of said flaps a is provided with an opening a and with a substantially U-shaped reinforcing-piece a lapped upon opposite sides of said flaps a and having its opposite branches provided with openings d alined with the opening of. A suitable fastening member (not illustrated) is secured to the other flap a and is passed through the openings 0. 02
The construction of my paper vessel will now be readily understood upon reference to the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings. Q
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The herein-described paper vessel folded from a blank and having a side wall thereof provided with inner, intermediate and outer parts, the intermediate part being united at its opposite upright edges to upright edges of the inner and outer parts and having its upper portion cutaway to bring the point of intersection between the upper edge of the intermediate part and the upright edge of the outer part, a distance below the upper edge of the latter, substantially equal to one-third of the length of said upright edge, whereby an approximately large area of said outer part is exposed above the edge of the intermediate part for permitting securement of the outer part to the inner part above a portion of the intermediate part, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The herein-described paper vessel folded from a blank and having a side wall thereof provided with an inner part of substantially the same width and height as the side wall, an intermediate part having an upright edge united to an upright edge 'of the inner part and lapped upon the outer face of the inner part, said intermediate part havingits upper edge inclined downwardly from the upright edge of the inner part united thereto, and an outer part united to the other upright edge of the intermediate part, the upper edge of said intermediate part intersecting with the upright edge of the outer part a substantial distance below its upper end to provide an approximately large exposed area above said intermediate part, said outer part being lapped upon the outer face of the intermediate part and upon the outer face of the inner part, and said exposed area of the outer part being attached to the outer face of the inner part, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name, in the presence of two attesting Witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, this 23d day of May, 1901.
JOHN SINGLE.
