LAWRENCE E. BUCHIVIAN, F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 VELANDA B. CARMEAN, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOX FOR CARRYING AND DISPENSING LIQUIDS.
To all whom 1'1? m (11 c01zccrn:
Be it known that l, LAWRENCE- E. BUCH- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadclphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes for Carrying and Dispensing Liquids, of which the following is a. specification. 1
This invention relates to boxes for carrying and dispensing beer and other liquids.
The object of the invention is to provide a paper box of novel, simple and eilicient construction which may be formed by folding a suitable paper blank and which when formed will be provided with a spout by means of which beer or other liquids may be poured out of the box. According to my invention, the spout is formed by cutting a. slit in the paper directly below the top of the box and extending around one corner of the box so that the corner fold extends lit be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention: Figure 1, is a view of a paper blank adapted to be folded into my improved box. Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the box with the spout in the closed position. Fig. 3, is a perspective view of the box with the spout in the open position,
Fig. 4, is a vertical section through the spout andadjacent parts of the box, showing the spout in the open position.
Referring to the drawings, the box comprises a bottom 2, a top 3 and side walls 4 connecting the bottom with the top.
The box is provided with a suitable carrying bail 5.
The box may be formed from any suitable paper blank, and, in the present embodiment of my invention ll form the box from the blank shown in Fig. 1. The bottom of the box is formed by the central portion 6 of the blank folded on the lines 7, the top of the box is formed by the outer flaps 8 folded on the lines 9, and the four side walls of the box are formed by the parts 10 folded on the lines 11. The corner parts 12 are folded on Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 31-, 1913.
Serial No. 745,320.
the lines 13 and against opposite sides 10 and have their corners overlapping and connected to the bail 5, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Thus far the parts are well known and need no detailed description.
The fold lines 11 at the sides of the parts 10 are brought together and form four con ners 14 extending from the bottom 2 to the top 3 of the box, and formed in the body of the paper blank is a spout blank 15 which is formed by cutting a slit 16 in the blank. When the box is formed from the blank, the slit 16 extends over the top and down the sides of the spout 15 and the spout is joined at its bottom to the paper forming the body of the box. Suitably spaced score lines 17 are formed in the paper at the junction of the bottom of the spout 15 to permit the paper to be folded or buckled onthe score lines when the-spout is adjusted from the closed position. shown in Fig. 2 to the open position, shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
The slit 16 extends around one corner 14 of the box and the corner fold extends centrally through the spout 15 thereby stiflening the same and providing a channel therein for the passage of the liquid when the spout is open. 7
When the spout is closed, as shown in Fig. 2, liquid may be carried in the box without danger of spilling.
Patented Mar. 3, 1914.
When it is desired to pour liquid from the' box, the spout 15 is adjusted to the position shown in F igs. 3 and 4 by folding or buckling the paper on the score lines 17. The
score lines 17 diverge from the bottom or end portions of the slit 16 toward the corner fold 1 1 which extends through the'spout 15 to permit the paper to be easily buckled in openin the spout without destroying its channe form.
The blank, Fig. 1, is rovided with a suitable opening which is rought into registry with the spout 15 when the blank is folded to form the box, so that no overlapping folded part of the box will obstruct the opening provided by the slit"16 when the spout is adjusted to the open position shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
I claim:
1. A box for carrying and dispensing liquids comprising a paper blank folded to form the bottom, the side walls and the top of the box, the paper forming the box having a slit cut therein forming a spout below the top of the box, said slit extending over forming the body of the box.
2. A. box for carrying and dispensing liquids comprising a paper blank folded to form the bottom, the side walls and the top of the box, said blank having folds extendingbetween the top and bottom of the box and forming corners at the junction of the side Walls, the paper forming the box having a slit cut therein extending around one of said corners and forming a spout through which one of the corner folds extends, said slit extending over the top and down the sides of the spout, and said spout being integral at its bottom and from one to the other of its sides with the paper forming the body of the box.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
