BROOM-CASE.
Application filed October 29, 1915.
the straw portions of a bundle of brooms.
may be placed for shipment.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a casing of this character which may be formed from a single sheet of foldable material preferably card board and which when folded about the straw portions of the broom will closely conform to the shape thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described with side walls which have a portion thereof bent to provide flaps, said flaps cooperating when the sheet of material is folded to form the end walls of the casing.
A still further object of the invention is to provide the side walls with an opening through which may pass a flexible element when the casing 1s applied to the straw portions of a bundle of brooms to prevent accidental displacement of the casing during shipment of the brooms.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a blank from which the casing is formed which has cut away portions and is scored in such a manner that when the blank is folded to form a casing for a bundle of brooms, the side and end walls of the casing taper upwardly and outwardly.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel features of construction which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
The preferred form of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, although no restriction is necessarily made to the precise details of construction therein shown, as changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the ap pended claim may be resorted to when so desired.
Like characters of reference denote corresponding points throughout the several views in the drawings in which-- Fi re 1 is a view of a bundle of brooms showlng the invention applied thereto.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 3, 1917.
Serial No. 58,637.
Flg. 2 is a plan View of a sheet of material rom which the broom case is formed.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing a slight modification of the blank from which the broom case is formed.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates a sheet of foldable material such as card board or the like, which is provided at the opposite sides thereof with an opening or cut out portion 2 and is further provided with spaced parallel score lines 3 which intersect the cut out portion 2 and form crease lines upon which the end portions of the sheet of material may be folded to provide the side wall 4.
The side wall 4 is diagonally scored, as at 5, so that the ends of the side walls 4 may be folded or creased along the score lines 5 to provide flaps 6 which cooperate when the sheet of material is folded to provide upwardly and outwardly tapering end walls of the casing.
The flap 6 is provided with a diagonally extending score line 7 which intersects the score lines 3 at their intersection with the score lines 5, so that one end of each flap 6 maly be creased along the score line 7 to provi e a tab 8 which is positioned beneath the intermediate portion of the sheet of material located between the spaced parallel score lines 3 when the sheet of material is folded into a casing for the brooms.
Each of the side walls 4: has an opening 9 therein through which may be passed, when the casing is folded about the straw portions of a bundle of brooms, a flexible element 10, which is then wound around the side and end walls of the casing and tied to prevent the accidental displacement of the casing from the ends of the broom.
The modified form of the invention shown in the drawings is identical in construction with that shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings with the exception that the blank from which the broom case is formed has each corner thereof out away so that the transverse width of each of the flaps 6 throughout their entire length outwardly from the score line 7 is: the same and the cut away portions 2 in the blank are of such shape as to enable the tabs 8 to be more easily inserted in the top of the casing when the sheet of material is folded.
When it is desired to apply the casing to the straw portions of a bundle of brooms,
lllll the brooms are laid upon one of the side walls 4; and the sheet of material bent or folded along the score lines 3. The side walls 4 are now bent along the score lines 5 and the end flaps folded to form the end walls of the casing,
The tabs 8 are now bent along the score lines 7 and inserted beneath the portion of the casing which forms the top thereof and which is located between the side walls 4.
The flexible element 10 may now be wound about the casingyor if desirable may be passed through the opening 9 in the side walls 4 and through the straw portions of the broom before the flexible element is wound. about the casing.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is atonceapparent that a broom casing has been provided which may be formed from a single sheet of material and which is inexpenslve of manufacture and which is highly efiicient in use.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is The combination with a bundle of brooms, of a case formed from a single substantially square blank of material scored to provide a top having side walls and end walls formed upon each of the side walls, said blank being recessed centrally and scored upon opposite sides to provide flaps which are adapted to be folded inwardly to lie between the underside of the top and the brooms, the scoring between the side and end walls and flaps being angularly disposed to provide a casing, which, when folded is formed of tapered side and end walls open at its tapered end and means for securing the case to the brooms.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
