crean-GAN LINING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 12, 1916.
Application filed October 25, 1915. Serial No. 57,799.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that l, DAVID RosnNzwErG, a citizen of thegUnited States, residing at Oklahoma city, in the county of Oklahoma, and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful improvements in Cigar-Can Linings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in linings for cans, especially paper linings such as are used in cigar cans and in which there is an inturned flap at the upper end which covers the upper ends of the cigars in a can or other content of the can and which should be torn off when the can is opened by removing its cover, the object of the invention being to provide an improved paper lining of this class which is provided with a weakened or perforated line spaced from its upper edge and which line is located at the upper edge of the wall of the can, so that wheny the cover has been removed from the can the covering flap or inturned portion of the paper lining above the cigars or other content of the can may be readily torn off along said weakened line and without danger of leaving jagged edges of the can lining projecting above the upper edge of the can wall.
The invention consists in a paper can lining having a folding line spaced from its lower edge and a folding and weakened tearing off line spaced from its upper edge and spaced from said folding line a distance corresponding to the height of the wall of the can in which the lining is to be used, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings z-Figure 1 is a plan of a cigar can paper lining constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a can, closed and filled and provided with my improved lining. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the can cover removed and the covering flap or upper portion of the lining in the act of being torn olf along the weakened tearing olf line.
The lining l is made of paper and is here shown as an oblong rectangular form and of a size adapting it to cover the inner side of the wall a of a can and with a bottom flap 2 to cover the bottom o of the can and with a top flap 3 to cover the upper ends of the cigars or other content of can and to bear directly under the removable cover or top c of the can.
The bottom fiap 2 is folded on a line 4 which is spaced a suitable distance from the lower edge of the lining. rlhe covering fla-p 3 is folded on a line 5 which is spaced from the upper edge of the lining and is also spaced from the line 4. The distance between the lines t, 5 is exactly equal to the height of the can wall, so that the line 5 lies exactly flush and even with the upper edge of the wall of the can. This line 5 is a tearoff line and is weakened by being provided and formed with a series of closely spaced perforations G, or in any other suitable manner.
When the can has been opened by removing its top cover the covering flap 3 of the lining, above the cigars or other contents of the can, is torn off along the perforated or otherwise weakened tear-off line 5 which is exactly even and level with the upper edge of the wall of the can, so that no portion of the lining projects above the can wall, and so that the lining presents a smooth upper edge level and coincident with that of the wall of the can. .The lining may also be provided with perforated or otherwise suitably formed tear off lines 7 extending from the line y6 to the upper edge of the lining and corresponding with the corners of the can to start the tear where desired.
The lining can be made of any suitable size and of any suitable material and may be used in connection with a can, box, or other container of any form or construction.
Having thus described my invention claim The herein described can lining having a folding line spaced from its lower edge, a. folding and tear-off line spaced from its upper edge and initial tear lines extending from said folding and tear-off line to its upper edge, said folding and tear-off line and said initial tear lines being weakened.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID RosENzwnrG.
