Application file March 20, 1914. Serial Ho. 828/BO.
To all whom it may conccrn: Be it known that l, Lewis J. vns, a citizen of the TJnited States, residing at Medina, in the county of rleans and State of New York.v have invented new and useful mprovements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has relation to boxes or analogous containers of rectangular form and Constructed of sheet material such as stout paper, paper board or fiber board, the purpose being the provision of abox which is lio'ht, dura-ble and capable of being cheaply Constructed and which may be filled or emptied from a side or an end, as may be found most advantageous.
The invention contemplates a box or like container Constructed of light or heavy sheet material of fiber, said fibrous material where deemed'necessary being strengthened by fabrc, which is secured thereto by glue or other adhesive or cementitious material, thus providing a box which is light, strong and lasting.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
Heferring to the drawings, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box embodying the invention, showing the same as it appears when closed or set up for use. Fig. 2 is a detail view in perspective having a side of the box thrown open and parts broken away. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the blank from which the body of the box is formed. Fig. 4: is a section on the line m--m of Fig. 5. Fig. 5 is a section on the line y-g/ of Fig. 4.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters.
The body of the box comprises inclosing sides which for convenience are designated as the top 1. bottom 2, front 3 and back 4. Flaps 5 are formed at the edges of the parts constituting the inclosing Sides, such flaps being adapted to be folded and refoldedso as to form a double joint with corresponding flaps at the edges of the end pieces 6, which close the space circumscribed by the sides, as hereinbefore designated. The
blank when formed into a box body being Secured by means cf the iaps 7 and The flap 7 is provided along the upper edge of the front 3, whereas the flap 8 is formed at the front edgelof the top 1 and is adapted to be folded over and beneath the flap 7, the several parts being secured in any manner either by fastenings or an adhesive. The
The invention provides a box or like container which may be filled or emptied from either end or from a side. VVhen the box is to be filled from an end, one of the end pieces is left loose, said box being stood upon the other end and after the box has been filled through the open end the same is closed by placing the end piece 6 in position and folding parts of the flaps 5 over the fiaps 9, the folded parts being Secured in any manner. If the box is to be filled from the side both end pieces are placed in position and are Secured by folding the flaps 5 of the bottom, front and back over corre-.
spending fiaps of the end pieces, the flaps at the edges of the top l and the flaps at the upper edoes of the end piecesflbeing loose, the top l being thrown open.
After the box has been filled the top 1 is closed and made secure by folding the flap 8 over the flap 7, after which the flaps at the ends of the top 1 and the upper flaps of the end pieces 6 are folded and made secure. The box may be opened by removing the fastenings in the event of detachable fastening means being employed or by slitting the flaps of an end or a side along the angles When the part thus loosened may be removed or turned aside to admit of access being had to the box.
F rcm the foregoing description, taken in connection With the accompanying draW- ings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of Operation Will be readilv apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appcrtains, and While I have described the principle of Operation of' the inventicn, together With the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changesr may be made When desired as are Within' the scope of the claim appended hereto. g
Having thus described the invention What is claimed as new, is':
A boX or container of rectang'ular form made of sheet material embodying. closed sides including a top, bottom, front and rear Walls and detachable ends, the top, bottom, front and rear Walls having doubleV flaps disposed along the longitudinal edge and the top and front Walls being further provided With double fiaps disposed along the transverse edges thereof, the ends being provided With double flaps, the transverse flaps of theV top being folded upon and again folded With the transverse flaps of the front, and the longitudinal fiaps of the top, bottom, front and rear Walls being foldedv upon and again folded With the flaps of the ends ANNA K. DoWD, LE RoY J. SKINNER.
