PACKING AND DISPLAY DEvloE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28, 1907.
Application filed July 31, 1906. Serial No. 328.534.
T fl/Z/ whom, it Wea/y concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL R. SLAYMAKER, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Ilancaster, in the county of Lancaster, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing and Display Devices, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein .to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in devices employed in the transportation and showing of goods, and is intended more particularly for the transportation and displaying of padlocks and ware of a similar character g and the objects of the improvements are to provide a case, box, or package in which the goods can not only be shipped, but from which they can also be fully displayed without removal from, or rearrangement in, the same.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the various parts, as hereinafter fully described, and then set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying `drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front view of the case, the outer fia-p being closed Fig. 2, a similar view, but showingI the outer A[lap open and the inner iiaps closed Fig. 3, a side elevation, with the easel-back in position for use; Fig. 4, a vertical transverse section, the easel-back being in position for use; Fig. 5, a rear view, the outer Hap being closed, and Fig. 6, a side elevation, the outer `flap being partially open. Fig. 7 is a vertical transverse section, showing thefront and a side flap open; Fig. S a front perspective view, with all the flaps open to their full extent g and Fig. 9, a view of the inside of the back of the case.
Similar numerals indicate throughout the several views.
As will be seen by reference to the drawings, the body of the case comprises a back 1 sides 2, top 3, and bottom 4. To the front of like parts top 3 an outer flap is vsecured by a hinge ory This outerjoint 5 of any flexible material. liap consists of an upper front section 6, hinged to top 3, a lower front section 7, hinged. to section 6 by a hinge or joint 8 of material similar to hinge 5, and a lip 9, whereby said outer iiap is secured in a closed or in an open position, and which is attached to lower section 7 by a hinge of liexible mate rial. All these hinges or joints may be of the material of which the flap is made and be continuations of it.
10 indicates flaps detachably secured to the front edges of sides 2 by hinges or joints of vflexible material, but these hinges or other flexible connections between 'liaps 10 and sides 2 may have series of perforations 12, as shown in Fig. 8, so that said fiaps 10 may be more readily detached. Flaps 10 are adapted to be folded. over the front of the case, as shown in Fig. 2, or to be thrown Wide open, as seen in Fig. 8, but when closed they do not necessarily cover the whole front.
.When the boxes 13 containing the goods are to be packed in the case 'all the flaps are open ed wide and said boxes are placed therein as shown in Fig. S, after which side flaps 1() are folded over the front (Fig. 2), vand then outer flap 6,7 is brought down over side flaps Y10 and the lip 9 is inserted between bottom 4 and the lower tier of boxes 13, Figs. 6 and 4, when the case is ready for transportation.
To open the case lip 9 is withdrawn from its position between bottom 4 and the lower tier of boxes. And when the case is disposed for the display of the goods contained therein, the outer fla is raised and turned back over the top of t e case, up er sections .6 being turned over the case an section 7 behind it, and lip 9 is then inserted in a ocket or slit 14 extending across the back ofp the case. For displaying the goods, flaps 10 may be entirely removed by detaching them on perforated lines 12. It will be observed that when the outer flap is folded back the inner surface of section 6 thereof is exposed to the front, to serve asia sign, or for advertising purposes, as shown in Fig. 8.
The back of the case comprises lapping end pieces or flaps 15 folded inward from and attached to or formed with sides 2, a de ending section 16 attached to or formed wit top 3 and having vertical slits 20 therein and covering iiaps 15, and an upwardly-extending section 17 attached to or formed with bottom 4, and which laps over said depending section 16. 0n the upper edge of section 17 is a plate 18 having thereon a lip 19 with ears 21 that engage slots 20, said lip 19 thus forming pocket or slit 14. Trunnion bearings 22 are secured to plate 18, by clamps 23, and these clamps, 23, pass through said plate, section 17, section 16, and both lapping aps 15, binding all these parts together. TIO
ings 22 are engaged by trunnions 24 of easelback 25, carried, when not in use, between lip 9 and bottom 4.
I do not limit myself to the details of construction herein shown and described, it is obvious that many alterations may be made therein without departing from the principle and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*- 1. The combination, in a case, ot the top, a section depending from the rear of the top and having vertical slits therein, a section eX- tending upward from the bottom and lapping the top section, ears connected with the lower section and engaging said slits, a llap for covering the front of the case and constructed to be folded back, and a lip on said flap adapted to engage said horizontal slit.
2.- The combination, in a case, of a back comprising iiaps attached to opposite edges ol: the case and lappingeach other, a section depending from the rear of the top and having vertical slits therein, a section extending upward from the bottom and lapping the top section, said top and bottom sections being outside of said side sections, ears connected with said lower section and engaging said slits, a llap lor covering the l'ront oll the ease and constructed to be lfolded bach, a lip on the l'ront llap adapted to engage said horizontal slit, clanips securing trunnion bearings to the back and binding together the opposite i'laps of the back and said top and bottoni sections together, and an easi-l-baek engag- 4. The combination in a wise, ol the top, a
flap lor covering the l'ront attached thereto., a section depending l'roln the reai olI the top, and having vertical slits therein, a Isection extending upward lfroin they bottoni and lapping the top section, ears eonneeting with the lower section and i-ngaging said slits ol the rear section, trunnion bearings and clamps securing said bearings to the baeli and binding said sections together.
