EDWARD m PINKEBTON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES HARKER HUDSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BOX.
Specification of Iletters Patent.
` Patented June d, 1919.
Application filed January 11, 1916. Serial No. 71,442.
resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois,- have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specifica-x tion.
My invention relates to improvements in boxes especially adapted for containing perforated music rolls for pneumatic player pianos, and has for its object the provision of an improved box of this character which is strong and durable and convenient in use. permits of ready removal or insertion of the rolls and which will adequately retain the rolls under normal conditions and prevent accidental falling thereof from the box, the present invention being an improvement on the box disclosed in my prior application filed August 11, 1915, Serial No. 44.921.
The invention consists in thc combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter de#- Ascribed and claimed.
Fig. 4, an enlarged vertical section taken' through the rear end ofthe box,
Fig. 5, a section 'taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4
Fig. 6, a section taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 7, a plan view of the blank fromwhich the box is formed.
The preferred form' of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a cardboard blank having a main bottom portion 8 situated substantially centrally therein; A side 'portion 9 is formed at one edge of bottom portion 8; atop portion 10 is formed at the outer edge of portion 9; a side portion 11 is formed at the outer edge portion 10; and a double bottom portion 12 is formed at the outer edge of side portion 11, said portions being adapted and arranged to be forced over the bottom 'portion 8 to form three consecutive walls of the box,
the portion l2 being secured to the upper face of bottom portion 8 to form a double bottom portion, as indicated, the secured areas being indicated by the stippled surface on bottom portion 8. An inner drop cover portion is formed from the portions 13, 14 and 15 of the portions 10, 9 and 11 respectively, as indicated, the side portions 11 and 15 being provided with depending lips or flanges 16 and 17 which operate within the body of'the box as the cover swings to act as guides and reinforcing members, as best indicated in Fig. 1.
At the opposite edge of bottom member 8 second side and top members 18,v 19 and 20 are formed and arranged and adapted to be folded over the previously formed Walls of the box to constitute double side and top 'walls therefor, said parts being secured to the corresponding parts by glue throughout the stippled areas, thus completing the body of the box. Portions 21, 22 and 23 of the portions 19, 20 and 18 respectively, are secured to portions 13, 14 and 15 throughout the stippled areas to form the body of a y double dropcover for the box and the lips 16 and 17 extending into the' spaces in the portions 9 and 11 when the box cover is closed to act as guides and reinforcing members for the cover.
At their rear ends, bottom and top members 8 and 410 are provided respectively with closure flaps 24 and25 extending substantially half the height of the box and foldable tliereacross to constitute an inner closure wall therefor. Additional closure flaps 26 'and 27 of sizes sufficient to cover the entire end of the box are formed on the rear ends of portions 1l and 20, the flap 27 being arranged to 'fold over the flap 26 and provided with a tongue 28 insertible betweentlie opposite side Walls of the box body. Additional tlaps 29 and 30 are formed on the opposite edges yof flaps 26 and 27 and are folded within the box closure, as indicated, to conceal the raw edges of the cardboard which would otherwise appear and to further stiifen the closures.
Flaps 31 and 32 are formed at the front ends of the portions 9 and Il respectively and are foldable across the 4bottom front end of the box, a tongue 32 being provided lon the forward edge of the bottom member 8 and foldablevover flaps 31 and 32 and insertible within the box body to frictionally hold the flanges 31 and 32 in place.
, open forward end of the box adapted to under ordinary conditlons of use.
prevent accidental falling'of a music roll therefrom but not high enough to materially interfere with the ready and intentional removal of a roll.
Flaps 34 and 35 are formed at the forward edges of the portions 22 and 23 and are arranged to foldacr'oss the end of the bottom portion of the drop cover member. A tongue 36 is formed at the forward end of the second cover member 21 and is foldable over the iaps 34 and 35 and insertible within the body ,of the drop cover to frictionally engage the sides thereof and hold the flaps 34 and 35 in place. A securing flap 37 is formed at the free edge of tongue 36 and is adapted to be folded flat against lthe inner sides of cover member 21,- the cover member 13 heilig made short enough to provide a space for this purpose, as indicated in Fig. 3. Additional flaps 38 and 39 are formed on the Vedges of tongue 36, as shown, and are folded inwardly into the closure to conceal the raw edges of said tongue which would otherwise appear and to further stifi'en the closure.
By this construction a strong and durable box is provided especially adapted for containing perforated music rolls for pneumatic player pianos which permits of the ready inspection or removal or replacement of music rolls therein, to which the cover is permanently attached and thus cannot be misplaced and which Will not permit ofthe accidental falling of a music roll therefrom While I have illustrated and described the i preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification Without departing from the spirit of the invention.- 1, therefore, do not Wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let` ters Patent is:
