SHOT-SHELL CARTON.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that NoRMAN L. RICHMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Loveland, in the county of Warren, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shot-Shell Cartons, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to shot shell cartons and similar cartons for any other purpose and more particularly to means for facilitating the opening of said cartons.

One object of my invention is to provide simple and efficient means for quickly and easily opening cartons adapted for holding loaded shot shells.

A further object is the provision of lines of weakened portions in adjacent sides of the box and lid of a cart-on adapted to hold shot shells, and the like, to facilitate opening the latter.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

An embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a carton embodying my invention, there being portion broken away to expose underlying parts; and

Fig. 2 is a central section through the carton shown in Fig. 1 with sides of the box and lid opened so that the contents of the carton can be moved.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 have indicated a carton which may be formed of the usual material such as pasteboard paper and of the usual size for holding loaded shot-gun shells. With cartons such are are now in general use the box and lid are held together by a wrapping label which is usually fastened with an adheslve thereby sealing the contents in the package. The user of the shells does not always have a knife or other implement handy for opening such sealed carton and sometimes resorts to simply tearing the carton to pieces and in so doing the sides tear irregularly making the ob of opening the carton difficult and decidedly inconvenient and annoying, and in some instances tearing in the wrong place permitting the contents to be spilled out when not desired.

My improved construction provides means for weakening adjacent sides of the box and lid so that the user of the loaded shells, and

the like, can easily and quickly tear the carton open along definite lines in a manner so that the carton can still be used for holding the shot shells when desired.

In the embodiment illustrated in the drawing, l have indicated a box having a bottom 3 and upstanding side walls l form-- ing a continuous flange around the periphery of the bottom @ver the box is dis posed a lid 5 having a depending continuous flange 6 extending over the upright walls a making a telescopic fit therewith. In one of the upright walls a and an adjacent part of the flange 6 I provide weakened lines in such wall and fiange so that this weakened portion will make the box open easily and provide definite lines along where the carton can be torn open without destroying further use of the carton for storage purposes. In the drawing, I have illustrated upright lines of spaced-apart perforations which extend entirely through the walls and 6, but it will be understood that any kind of weakened lines may be used so as to facilitate tearing the walls a and 6 along definite lines so as to form the hinged overlapping doors shown in 2. In Fig. l, the perforations 7 in wall 4 are indicated as directly over perforations 8 in wall 6 so that when the person us ing the shells wants to open the box he may place his thumb or finger in the recess 9 which is usually formed in cartons of this character, and by pulling outwardly and upwardly tears the wall 6 so that it can open, as indicated in Fig. 2. He may next engage his finger nail with the top edge of adjacent wall 4; and by pulling outwardly and down wardly on this wall, the latter is opened to the position indicated in 2. The contents of the carton can then be removed as desired. It will be noted that the lines of perforations are preferable adjacent corners of the carton, but these lines may be formed in any suitable part of the carton so as to facilitate opening the latter. I have indi cated two of said weakened lines or perf rations in both the flange and box side, but it will be understood that any desired number may be used.

It should be understood that the carton shown in the drawing comprises a flat bottom 3 with upstanding walls a which form a continuous nange around the periphery of such bottom. The lid comprises a flat top 5 with depending walls 6 which form a con ti nuous flange around the periphery of such top. The upright spaced-apart lines of per forations T in one of the upstanding walls t preferably extend from the lower edge of such wall or from the periphery of the bottom 3 over the entire height of such wall l. In the same manner the upright spaced-apart lines of perfo ions 8 in one of the walls 6 preferably extend over the entire width or depth of such wall downwardly from the upper edge thereof or from the periphery of the top 5. Since the lid telescopes over the box the doors formed by tearing along the lines of perforations will swing on hinges at the periphery of the bottom and at the periphery of the top and in opposite directions. Initially the portions between the lines of the perforations of the walls at and 6 are in overlapping relation and when the doors are formed by tearing along the lines of perforations they are swung in opposite directions, and when the doors are closed they will again be in overlapping relation.

' The lines of perforations are preferably near the upright corners of the carton, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to secure the benefit of the holding effect near the edges, thereby facilitating the tearing of the overlapping portions between the perforations along the desired lines. By providing the perforations, as shown. in the drawing, the box may be packed with shot gun shells, the lid tele scoped in place and the labeling placed on the carton, sealing the same for transporta tion and for storage, but when the shells are to be used the carton may be quickly opened and one or more of the shells removed or all of them quickly removed. But whenever desired the carton may be continued in use after being opened to hold compactly the shells remaining in the carton.

I claim 1. A carton comprising a box having upstanding walls and spaced-apart lines of perforations in one of said walls, and a lid for the box, said lid having a depending flange in overlapping relation with said perforated side wall and itself also having spaced-apart upright lines of perforations.

2. A carton comprising a box with side walls having spaced-apart weakened lines extending from one edge of one of the walls, and a lid having a depending flange disposed over said side walls in telescopic relation therewith with weakened lines in a portion. of said flange adjacent the first-nanied weakened lines to permit opening said carton by tearing the portions between the weakened lines in opposite directions.

A carton comprising overlapping walls between certain corners, and weakened spaced-apart lines both of such overlapping walls, such weakened lines in one wall being adjacent the weakened lines respectively in the other wall, said weakened lines being also adjacent said corners, and said weakened lines being adapted to permit opening the carton by tearing the overlapping walls in opposite directions along said wea rened lines adjacent said corners.

A. carton comprising a box with side walls and two spaced-apart lines of perforations in one ofthe side walls extending substantially over the entire width of said wall to the edge connected to the bottom of the box, and a lid with a depending flange forming depending walls disposed over said firstnamed walls in telescopic relation therewith, said depending flange having in one of its walls spaced-apart lines of perforations adjacent the first-named perforations respectively and extending substantially the full width of said flange to the edge thereof connected to the top of said lid.

5. A carton comprising a box with upstanding walls, a lid with depending walls telescopically fitting over said upstanding walls, and means for facilitating opening the carton to gain access to the contents thereof, comprising spaced-apart weakened lines extending from the lower edge of one of the depending walls toward the top of the lid.

6. A carton having a box with upstanding walls and spaced-apart lines of perforations in one of the said walls, and an additional flange overlapping the said perforated flange, said additional flange being also provided with spaced-apart lines of perforations, whereby when the flanges are torn along said lines of perforations in. opposite directions access to the contents of the box may be had.

7. A carton comprising overlapping flanges when the carton is closed, spacedapart lines of perforations in overlapping portions of said flangesto permit first a portion of one flange to be torn along its lines of perforations and then a portion of the underlying flange torn along its lines of perforations to gain access to the contents of the carton. 8. l3. carton comprising overlapping flanges having perforated break lines at the edges thereof, one flange being adapted to be torn along its spaced-apart break lines in one direction and the other flange being adapted to be torn along its spaced-apart break lines in the opposite direction for opening the carton for access thereto without destroying the carton for subsequent use as a container.

10. A carton comprising a box having up standing side Walls, and a lid for the hon, said lid having depending side Walls forming a continuous flange in overlapping relation with said upstanding side Walls, one of said depending walls having spaced-apart weakened lines adapting the tearing of said last-named depending Wall along such Weal:- ened lines to open the carbon to gain access to the contents thereof Without destroying the carton for subsequent use as a container of a portion of the cai'tons contents.
