Description

June 24, 1930. c. R. CASE DISPENSING COVER Filed June 5, 1928 Inventor Char/es R 60.56
A ttor n y Patented June 24, 1930 UNITED STATES CHARLES R. CASE, OIF SCENIC, WASHINGTON DISPENSING COVER Application med June 5,
My present invention relates to an improved dispensing cover or lid for cartons. The primary object of the invention is the provision of a cover or lid that may be applied to a carton which has been broken or torn open, and the lid or cover used as a device by means of Which the Contents of the carton may be poured and guided. The dispensing cover Vis provided with means by which it may with facility be attached to the carton and the cover has a hinged chute or lid that is openable for the purpose of pouring and guiding the contents from the carton.
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated one complete example and a modification thereof, of the physical embodiment of my invention wherein the parts are combined and arranged according to the best mode I have so far' devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a portion of' a carton with thle dispensing cover of my invention applied thereto and showing by dotted lines the open position of the hinged lid of the cover;
Fig. 2 is a sectional detail view at line 2 2 of Fig. 1; f
Fig.'y 3 is a sectional detail view at line 3 3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing a modified form of the device; and
Fig. 5 is a sectional detail view at line 5--15v of Fig. 4. ,v
In order that the general arrangement and relation of parts may readily be understood, I have shown a portion of a carton 1 which may be of pasteboard or of wood or of other suitable material and provided with the usual top 2 in which a pouring hole 3 is provided before the dispensing cover of my invention is applied thereto.
The dispensing cover is of rectangular 45 shape and preferably constructed of metal and in sizes lcomplementary to the standard sizes of cartons so that the dispensing cover may with facility be applied to the carton.
The cover is indicated as 4 and is provided 5o with side flanges 5 so thatthe cover may be Cil 1928. Serial No. 282,992.
slipped over the top of the carton. In the side flanges integral studs 6 or pointed lugs are struck from the material of the fianges and these lugs are bent inwardly to penetrate the side walls of the carton as indi- 5;, cated in Fig. 3. By this means, the dispensing cover may with facility be secured to the top of the carton, and after the carton has been emptied, this same dispensing cover may be detached therefrom and applied to another carton for further use.
The dispensing cover at one end is pro-l vided With a hinged pouring lid or chute 7 which is pivoted or hinged at 8 and adapted when closed to cover the opening 9 in the cover 4. Thev hinged lid has side flanges 10 complementary to the flanges 5 of the cover and when turned to closed position as indicated in Fig. 1, the hinged lid 7 provides an effectual cover or closure for the carton. Vhen the hinged lid is to be used, it is turned to dotted line position in Fig. 1 and uncovers` the openings 3 and 9 so that thel contents of the carton may be poured therefrom.
vIn Figs. 4 and 5, a modified form of the hinged lid is shown integral with the boxv or carton 11 having a top portion 12 with an opening 13 at one end. The hinged lid 14 covers this opening and is designed to bend at the edge 15 upwardly to dotted line position in Fig. 4. This hinged lidhas sidev anges 16 and a tab 17 for attachment to the box -or carton 11 and these parts-are separated from the box prior to turning the hinged lid 14 to dotted line position in Fig. 4. Vhen the hinged lid is in the dotted line position of Fig. 4, it will be apparent that the contents of the box may be poured therefrom through thel opening 13.
Having thus fully described lny invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is v An auxiliary cover for cartons consisting of a cover member having side fianges; inte- 95 gral attaching prongs disposed on the inner surface of said flanges; a discharge openingextending entirely across one end of said covermember; a hinged lid pivoted near one end of said cover member and arranged to cover said discharge opening, :1nd downwardly extending side fhlnges on said lid overlapping the sides of he cover member, arranged to Conc-t with (he lid proper to form a discharge chute when in the opened position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CHARLES R. CASE.
