Be it known that I, ELsrn lV. Kraay, a citizen 'of the United Stamm-residing. at New York city, county of New-YoI-k, borough of Manhattan, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements vin Containers, oi which the Jfollowing is a full, clear, and exact specification. v

My invention lrelates to containers and refers particularly to containers suitable for use with powders. i

7Whileit is generally admitted that loose powders are preferable to so-called powder compacts for toilet use, the latter have. received considerable popularity based upon their convenience. y l

Among the disadvantages incident to the employment of loose powder are its liability to sittout. o't the container when being earried, its sifting and dusting over the clothes of the user when being employed, the waste otpowder dueto loss and the unl'iygienic method employed in exposing the entire powder mass when being used.

On the, other hand, the loose powder has n'iany advantages over powder compacts in thatit is iiriner condition, is free from harsh and injurious binding materials, `is more economical when properly used and can be more readily applied to the necessary powder putf y y The device of my invention` overcomes theobjections incident to the employment `of loose toilet powders whereby. advantage may be taken of their valuable properties. v

In the device of my invention, the powder mass iscompletely protected from accidental, or atmospheric, contamination, the escape of the powder from the container is impossible and4 an excessive removal of powder is prevented, an amount of powder only suiicient for the desired purpose being removed from the mass and this being automatically deposited upon a tray-like portion of the device for puff employment.

These and other advantageous features of my device will be evident upon a consideration of my specification and its accompanying drawings.

The particular formof the device ofymy invention, shown in the accompanying drawings`v comprises a tray-bottom vmember having the bottom 10 and the upwardly extended flange 11. The container bottom thus formedhasagtransverse wall 12 with a plurality ,of openings 13, 13,- 13` in the central portion thereof. The `wall 1Q carries the pivot-ally attached closure 14, capable of covering and closing the openings 13, 13, 13, the closure 14C-having the bent portion 15 for ease of manipulation.

Hingedly attached to the bottom flange 11 at 16 is a cover, or lid, having the top member 17 `and the ext-ended flange 18the inner `face of the top member 17 carrying the mirror 19. The tcp flange 18 .carries the catch 2O coacting with -theln'iember 21 of the bottom flange 11 to maintain the device in closed position.`

One particular replaceable meansfor employing powder with my device, is. shown in Figureft, comprising an annular cardboard carton 25, one. portion of the side of which has been cut away andthe opening .covered with a piece of paper 26. The carton 25 is of such size that it will fit 4snugly into the bottom compartment covered by the lid 22.

The device is prepared for use as follows The paper 26 of the carton 25 is removed and the carton placed within the bottom compartment, with the openings of the carton caused by the removal of the paper 26 in alignment with the openings 13, 13 of the partition 12, the closure 14C being down and closing the openings 13, 13. The compartment cover 22 is then allowed to as sume its normal position over the carton, the pins 24, 24 entering the top cover of the carton and preventing it from movement. Y

IVhen it is desired to use the powder, the puff 27 is removed from the pui' compartment, the closure 14 raised and the device slightly inclined in order that the requisite quantity of powder may pass through the openings 13, 13 into the puff compartment, when the openings 13, 13 are closed by the closure means 111, the putt' 27 being employed'to make use of the powder in the pu'f compartment.

It is evident that my device may be" eniployed with loose powder not contained in a carton, in which caseI prefer to have the transverse partition form an extended pocket 28, in order that all of the loose powder in the powder compartment may be fifi rightly caused to pass through t-he openings 13,13. v

From the foregoing, it will be seen that my device is extremely compact, that it can be employed with replaceable powder cartons in the use of which the powder is doubly protected from sifting Aand containination, that it is economical as there is no loss of powder, that it is cleanly as only sufficient powder may be 'placed upon the pull' and that, therefore, it presents an eiiicient means for the carrying and use oi toilet powders. I do not limit myself to the particular size, shape, number, or arrangement, of parts as shown anddescribed, as these are givcii simply asa means for clearly describing the devices of my invention.

I/Vhat I claim is `1.V In a powder container, in combination, a tray-bottom, a transverse wall within the bottom forming a plurality of compartments, the wall having openings therein, means for closing the wall openings, a cover for one compartment and a cover for the device.

In a powder container, in combination, a tray-bottom, a transverse wall within the bottom forming a plurality of compartments, the wall having opening therein, pivotal means for closing the wall openings, a hinged coverfo'r one compartment, means for normally maintaining the co ver in closed position and a cover for the device.

4. In a powder container, in combination, a tray-bottoni, 'la transverse wall with the bottom forming a plurality V'of compartments, the vwall having openings therein, pivotal means for closing the wall openings, a hinged cover for one compartment, means capable of maintaining a carton within the compartment, means for normally maintaining the cover in closed position and a cover for the device.V
