PHOTOGRAPHIC PAPER REGEPTACLE Filed June 1G, 1920 Patented .lune l2, i923.
UNITE@ STATES 'WILLIAM C. COX, 0F WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
:PHOTOGRAPHIC-PAPER RECEPTACLE.
Application filed June 16, 1920. Serial No. 389,512.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. Cox, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at lVashington, in the District 'of 5 Columbia, have invented a certain new and' useful Improvement in Photographic-Paper Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference to im` provements in receptacles, more particularly to that type of receptacle employed for containing or housing bromide and other highly sensitized photographic paper, the principal object of my invention residing in the provision of a device of the character mentioned which is desirable for use by photographers for housing the sensitized paper used by them in printing work in a manner such as will positively shield the same from the action of detrimental light rays and also, to prevent such receptacle from being carelessly left open subsequent to the removal of paper therefrom.
It is also an obj ect of the invention to provide a novel form of closure for the receptacle capable of being easily and quickly' opened as may be desired, whereupon said closure will automatically move to its closed position for shielding its sensitized contents from light.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in art pointed out hereinafter.
n order that the invention and its mode of application may be readily understood by those skilled in the art, I have in the accom` panying illustra-tive drawings and in the detailed following description based thereon, set out a preferred embodiment of the same.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved receptacle;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevation yof the same;
Figure 3 is a Jfragmentary vertical longitud'inal section through the receptacle, and,
Figure 4 is a fragmentary detail in' sectiontaken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Having more particular reference to the drawings, in connection with which like reference characters will designate corresponding parts throughout the several views thereof, l indicates the box proper of myl improved device, the forward portion of which is open.
Hinged to the forward marginal portion of the box l and adapted to cover or close a portion of the forward opening therein, is a flap 2, of size and shape corresponding to that of the wall in the opposite end of the 6U box l, such hinge connection of the flap being effected through the medium of spring hinges 3, whereby said flap will be normally maintained in its closed position with rela tion to the box.
Right angularly disposed apertured tongues 4 are formed on the opposite ends of the flap 2, and as will be noted, are adapt ad' to be arranged adjacent the side walls of the box l when saidflap is in its closed position, and also, to have connection for effecting its opening, such as hereinaftermore fully described.
As means for closing the remaining open portion of the box '1, a lid 5 is employed and is formed with side and end walls which are adapted to be engaged over that end' of the box adjacent thereto whereby to effect positive closure of the same. Rearwardly disposed crank arms 6 extend from the lid .5 and carry thereon pins 7, while the rearward marginal portion of the lid is connected' to the corresponding portion of the box proper by means of spring hinges 8, similar to the hinges 3.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a form of means for closing the open forward portion of the box l, such means consisting of the hinged flap 2 and the hinged lid 5, the Hap 2 being secured in its closed position with relation to the box through the engagement of the end and side portions of the lid 5 thereover.
As means for effecting connection between the flap 2 and the lid 5 whereby to facilitate opening of the box and further, to insure proper functioning of such elements, links 9 are provided on each side of said box, certain of the ends thereof having pivotal con nection with the -apertured tongues 4 as at 10, while slots l1 are formed in the opposite portions of said links and slidably receive the pins 7 therethrough, these pins, if desired, having their outer ends upset or headed whereby to prevent disengagement of the slotted ends of the links 9 therefrom. Thus, when the lid 5 is grasped by av user and swung upwardly about its pivot afforded by the spring hinges 8, the rearwardly disposed crank arms 6 will obviously move forward,
lll)
thus moving the pins 7 in a corresponding direction lthrougl the slots ll infthe adjacent endsiof thellinks 9. 'When the-lid 5 has been swung upwardly for a predetermined dis- 5 tance, the pins 7' env-its fingers Gwwillgposi-v tively engage the links 9, since they will have moved to the inner ends o'fythe slots ll therein. At this time, and with continued movement ofthe lid 5, outwardfthrust will be im Y 10 parted' to the links 9 and in consequence to fthe liingedflap- 2 by reason 'f ofi' thev pivotal fcoi'ineotion'sf 10;y thereby ycausing said flap to -be 4swiir'igdowiiwardly lto an open position. vfln'tllris'-zonnecti'on, itshouldbenoted that by A15' providing the-'slots 1l inthe links` 9 whereby movementoft'helidA 5 independently of the 1Mflap Zwillbefpermitted for a predetermined l-ipre'ventingpassage of light" Lrays into f the l*receptacle 'with the resul-tantdetrimental action Tupon its sensitized contents.v Other 7-"-for1nsjof Llightlbreaks i are provided and'l i,:Ov-are{in/" 'form ofangle ystrips '14 'secured to 'fithe"inner yside-"of vthe Vflap 2' adjacent its opp'site ends and "'are' adapted toI be engaged in" simi-lar strips 15 arranged in and l A"secilr'f'ed-'to theadjacentportions of' thev side 3a/walls ofthe box l.
' The use-of myl improvedl device vv"reviewed'as follows:
Photographic' paper," usually 'in' sheets, is
"1"".40 tographer desires to "removebneor a number 'ofthese sheets; he grasps the lid 5 and .12 "swingsffthe 'i same up'vvardlyv on its 4 'pivot -fhereinbefore' set* out, "thus, movin'g said'flap d'owhwardly' whereby toeXpo'se' the'ends of the sheets of paper'in 'order thatthe same 1560:' Alinks 9:"whioh are connected by thev pins 7 fto therearwardly disposed fingers 6 on said A'lid 5`,"this apfmo'ving to its closed position automatically by' means ofthe spring hinges v'3' whichconnectthesame to the adjacent kportion of the box l. Hence,`since said may be flap is first moved to its closed position, it wilil'beappreciated'thatlther lid 5 will be allowed tol engage over lthe sameints subsequent closure, thus positively closing the previously open portionfof` the receptacle and preventing the admission of light to the In using my improvedv receptacle for pho- -tographic'paper-,- I desire to have it understood that a number of the same may be 75 employed if desired,` these' different recep-l tacles varying in' sizefto: accord witlilthe 'size of the paper to beho'used'thereby."9The different size"rec'eptacles are4 preferably ar-- ranged in stepped superposed relationship, 30 the steppedrportions thereofbeing vlids' 5, whereby said lids can be freely andareadily swung upwardly for opening their' particular receptacles. ithisarrangement, it g5 cepta'cles willbe vprevented 'fromfswinging back too far, and inV consequence, fwillinsure their prompt return to closed position upon 'release by Ithe photographer.
Manifestly, the constructionshown is cai pable of considerable modification Aand such modification 'as `is within the scope of 'my claims, I 'consider' withint'he ,spiritx'of my invention.
