Dec. 11, 1934. v MQRHQUS 1,984,228
ASH CAN COVER Filed May 18, 1954 Patented Dec. 11, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to covers especially adaptable for ashcans and like containers, and has for the primary object the provision of a device of the above stated character which may be easily and quickly applied to a container for completely closing the latter and provide means which will allow materials such as ashes, dirt and the like to be placed in the container and to immediately close on the removal of the depositing means so that dust or small particles of dirt rising in the container will be prevented from leaving such container.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which s Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating a container with a cover applied thereto constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view illustrating the cover.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional View showing the cover applied to the container and illustrating in dotted lines the positioning of the door elements to permit depositing of materials into the container.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a cover adapted to fit over a container 2 for the purpose of receiving ashes and similar material. The cover is of the flange type so that it will not become accidentally displaced from the container and is provided with an opening 3 surrounded by a hood 4 equipped with a suitable handle 5 to facilitate the handling of the cover. The hood 4 includes a curved wall 6 and end walls 7. Said walls are flanged, as shown at 8, and riveted or otherwise secured to the cover. The curved wall 6 of the hood terminates short of one end of the opening so as to form a mouth for the front of the hood normally closed by a door element 9 hinged to the curved wall, as shown at 10, and weighted so as to normally assume a depending position, as shown in full lines in Figure 3. A door element 11 is hinged to the cover, as shown at 12, and is of a size to partially close the opening 3 of the cover and when brought into engagement with the door element'9 and the latter in a depending position the opening 3 of the cover is completely closed preventing escape of dust or the like from the container. Pins 13 are secured to the side walls 7 of the hood for preventing the door 9 from swinging outwardly of said hood and also form anchors for coil springs 14. The springs 14 have connected thereto rods 15 which extend through slots 16 in the cover and are connected to the door element 11. The springs 14 normally support the door element 11 horizontally or in engagement with the lower edge of the door element 9.
It is customary to handle ashes and like materials with a shovel and to place such materials a in the container, the shovel carrying said material is pushed against the. door elements 11 and 9 causing them to assume the dotted line position, as shown in Figure 3, whence the shovel may be emptied of its contents and as the shovel is withdrawn said door elements assume full line position, as shown in Figure 3, or closed position to prevent the escape of dust from said container.
Having described the invention, I claim:
1. A cover for containers comprising a coverlike element provided with an opening, a hood secured to said element and partially overlying the opening, and door elements hinged to said element and hood to cooperate with each other in closing the opening and adapted to permit materials to be passed through said openings by a force against said door elements.
2. A cover for containers comprising a coverlike element provided with an opening, a hood carried by said element and partially overlying the opening, a door-like element hinged to the hood, a second door-like element hinged to the cover-like element for cooperating with the first-named door-like element in closing the opening.
3. A cover for containers comprising a coverlike element provided with an opening, a hood carried by said cover-like element and partially overlying the opening, a weighted door hinged to said hood and normally occupying a depending position, a door-like element hinged to the cover, and spring means between the hood and the second-named door-like element to cause the latter to abut the first door-like element for closing the opening.
